No, I don't support the death penalty because the legal system is fallible. Then again, this is not a death penalty discussion.

At the same time, however, I don't buy into arguments that personal consumption of illegal drugs does not represent a serious offense or a victimless crime. In this and other societies, I am sick of persons of privilege basically thumbing their nose at the legal system, especially when normal folk tend to get the short end of the stick when facing similar circumstances. I also don't like the idea that Ms. Sakai could possibly benefit from her crimes courtesy of interview fees, book royalties, etc. As such, I really hope the presiding judge sees through the smoke (the idea of Sakai studying to be a home-helper is laughable) and sends this woman down for some serious time. Indeed, if the law is to be seen as being blind and fair (in that the administering of justice is done without fear or favor), if there are any precedents of normal folk getting sent down for similar amounts of drugs, the judge has a responsibility to punish Sakai likewise.

Definitely, I think at least 5 years with hard labor is in order for this woman, the pro-surfer (lol) should also do some serious time. I also hope that the judge delivers some form of injunction to stop her benefiting from this notoriety, in addition to looking at some contempt charges for the media institutions that have trod on the authority of the court. Furthermore, the judge should instruct the director of public prosecutions to look into the matter of who sheltered this woman once a warrant had been issued for her arrest. Any and all such persons should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting a suspected felon. In all instances, such prosecutions should be to the full extent of the law.

Politics aside, Bush has a pretty infamous reputation in baseball as well, authorizing possibly the most disastrous player trade in history.

The officer obviously felt that he was in danger. As such, he was fully justified in drawing his weapon. What I cannot understand, however, is why there are no bodies. Thinking back many years ago, when I first learned to shoot the emphasis was always in hitting the T (the cross made by the intersection of two lines - one running across the head, and the other running down the middle of the body), in which we were expected to put two slugs. At least this cop could have winged one of them, and then finished them off. What is the world coming to?

Somebody will swing for this. Such candid comments are not supposed to be reported in the press. Also, considering the whaling lobby here in Japan, the spaceman is going to have to do some pretty good dancing.

How did the man at the ATM get the pin number for the cash card? I bet she had it written down in her wallet....

A little naive aren't we? Have you never heard of "enhanced interrogation" techniques? Anybody who was willing to kill this girl and then try a bit of arson afterward in order to destroy any evidence is probably more than capable of a little bit of torture. Let's face it,if such activities were horrific enough, nine out of ten people would also divulge personal information.

Anyway, I hope they get a name to the video footage ASAP. Then all they have to do is get the chap down the cells for a bit of a chat.

The more troops you put in the more you can control, but also the more targets you make for roadside bombs and other type of guerrilla warfare.

It is one or the other. Either you commit to this war on terrorism or you shelter in your homes not knowing when S will hit the F. Indeed, I would assume that all the boys and girls in uniform signed off on the willingness to perform hazardous duty. As such, being a target goes with the territory. We shoot them and they shoot us. That is how it goes. If you want to pussyfoot around and worry about the number of kids you are putting into body bags, then perhaps the allies have already lost.

I think calling Obama a con-man is going too far. However, he should stop the "talking teleprompter" routine and start getting serious about the job. Having people around for a beer summit is not very presidential, differing little from John McCain's laments regarding "Joe the Plumber."

Moreover, Obama needs to start showing some substance in his actions, rather than just appearing to fawn for the cameras. A good case in point was his meeting with next of kin of service people killed in Afghanistan. While it was a good gesture to go out and meet the returning bodies, turning the whole affair into a dog-and-pony show for the benefit of the media is not a good thing.

On one level, this woman's stupidity seems beyond comprehension. At the same time, however, her excuse “I did it to help my parents repay their debts. No matter how much I worked, we always struggled to get by” is a pretty harsh condemnation of the plight of the working poor in Japan.

Great politicians playing soldiers. Just what America needs (like a hole in the head).

In this case, I don't like the direction that the President is leaning in. Before aiming at a bargain-basement approach to the war in Afghanistan, Obama should give his field commanders everything that they want. Scrimping on troop deployments is a recipe for disaster. Shinseki knew it before the Iraq invasion, and Colin Powell admitted it afterwards. If Obama is really serious about applying pressure to AQ and the Taliban, I would suggest he gives Stan the Man everything he wants. Of course, if McCrystal then stuffs up and cannot get the job done, then some consideration should be given to other alternatives.

Like him or loath him, you have to give Obama credit for such actions. Indeed, one of the biggest responsibilities of those who order others into harms way is being there to see the outcome of such actions, positive and otherwise.

On a related topic, in addition to the somewhat spotted service record of some senior members of the previous administration, one thing I found very upsetting was the policy that tended to ignore the return of casualties . Such secrecy is totally uncalled for. In an open society, if people (the nation in general) are to send their kids off to fight, then they must be able to live with the scenes of body-bags and wounded coming home.

Rake his studs over faces in the ruck

Doesn't everybody mate? Back in the day, raking furrows in your opponent's head was all part of the game. You handed it out and you took it. A good Saturday of rugby consisted of a bit of biff during the game, a mandatory visit to the casualty ward at hospital, and then down to the pub for pies and beer with the opposition. A real good time being had by all.

These days, however, the hardest performing people are the trainers who seem to run marathon distances while giving players band-aids. And they talk about fitness? Give me the old school any day. People like the Ella Brothers, Simon Poidevin, Zinzan Brook, etc.

I could get on the moral outrage bandwagon, but hey, it is just another day in the Twilight Zone, aka Japan.

Anyway, I hope this woman gets literally shafted to the full extent of the law, meaning a long-term prison sentence and all the shame that should be associated with such a disgusting crime.

Furthermore, I hope the cops go in boots and all and find out who the buyers were. Again, lock such rock spiders up and make their names public.

The structure, which can host up to 160 guests, features an innovative sound and light show of New Zealand tourism, nature, culture, food and wine and creative industries projected onto the inner structure.

This sounds like a rehash of what New Zealand did at the Expo down Aichi.

Just out of interest, the grandparents of one of my NZ mates (we went through RMC together) actually had real tattoos that were put in the traditional way back in the 1920s or so.

The most untalented Australian team in living memory.

That is a bit rough. In living memory I think that honor goes to the Wallabies who were forced to do kiddie scrums against England a couple of years ago for the lack of any good props. Just watching that game made my skin crawl.

Then again, the game in general these days lacks the characters of times gone by. The hard men of times gone by were a lot tougher than the chaps playing today. Anyone remember Richard Loe, that outstanding All Black known as the "enforcer?" I remember seeing a TV program with him training (down on the farm). He is the only guy I have every seen who could do knee squats while shouldering 2 44 gallon drums. The Australians also had a couple of tough characters. One that readily comes to mind is Topo Rodriguez, originally from Argentina. I still remember going to NZ to watch the Bledisloe Cup and seeing him poleaxe some poor New Zealander with a perfectly legal tackle. The chap who was hit suffered multiple fractures and separation of his chest cartilage Those were the days, the chaps playing now just don't compare when it comes to playing the game the way it should be played, i.e., handing out and taking a bit of biff.

Deadliest month for U.S. in Afghan War

Until next month or the month after that. I really wish the media would be a little more original in their coverage of this conflict rather than just focusing on the fact that the body count is mounting (as it always does in war).

Saw this on the morning news, the war canoe had its bow rammed in nicely. Don't know who is going to be found at fault, however, I would assume that the officers of the watch on the MSDF vessel are all for the high jump.

At the same, however, it is good that nobody was killed.
