ratpack has hit the nail on the head. Bullying should be stamped out with no mercy shown. If you are a parent, you should stand up for your kids and not take any crxp about this issue. Going in too hard is better than having to cut your kid down after they have hung themselves.
My elder son used to get hassled at school here in Japan by some of his less intelligent classmates (including one kid who has built up a rather impressive rap-sheet by the age of 14). After convincing my wife that it was time to sort this out once and for all, she finally consented to me marching up to the school and raising hell.
First, I sorted out the teacher who was supposed to be in charge. I told him to stop trying to be the kids' friend, and start being their leader. The look on his face was amazing. It was as if I had just reinvented the wheel.
Next, I went around to the other kid's home and talked to the father. Apparently dad has the reputation of being a bit of a hood. He actually tried to threaten me before I enlightened him about my previous profession. I also gave junior an ear-full and told him all bets were off.
Anyway, the outcome of this little exercise was that I received numerous phone calls from other parents whose kids were victims of this little punk. I also got an invite from the school to give a lesson on ethics (dotoku in Japanese).

At the end of the day, Polanski is worried about going to prison in the United States. Knowing his luck, if he is found guilty he might get sent to Corcoran State Prison where prisoner #B33920 would just love to drop in a say hi. Who knows, they might even get together for a bit of home brew and discuss mutual friends, dear departed.

Good to see the references here to Roman Polanski being a holocaust survivor. And this excuses him for his actions? I think not.
If you believe that Polanski should get some form of concessions just because he survived the Nazi scourge, you should ask yourself if Anne Frank would have committed such acts....

That's the problem with allies, unfortunately you cannot pick them.
With regard to the ex-cruise boat entertainer, I sometimes seriously wonder what goes on inside Mr. Berlusconi's head (if anything). When hosting him in the US, the Obamas should have asked him to put on a bit of a floor show for the media. Go on Silvio, show us what a complete fool you are.
I also have to question the intellect of the Italian body politic. Berlusconi has been shown on numerous occasions to be an intellectual dwarf of minute proportions, how is it he remains in office?
Then again, he would have been an even bigger disaster as an emperor of Ancient Rome.

Iran says it is prepared to crush any military threat
Deluded or what? If this is a bit of saber-rattling aimed at the West, it is not going to work.
Why? Because for all its faults when it comes to policing invaded countries, the US (and its allies) are very, very proficient at methodically destroying the infrastructure of nations with whom they have a beef. How long did it take for the US to kick Iraq out of Kuwait in Gulf War 1, a little bit over a month? And what about the invasion of Iraq? That didn't last that long either. Trust me, the famous adage about "Bombing People Back into the Stone Age" still holds true for the US military. The scary thing, however, is that it is always being refined.
Now if General Hossein Salami and the regime in Tehran want to push the issue further, sooner or later the West will respond, making General Salami and his colleagues into salami, bratwurst or any other non-kosher sausage.

The eyes of an eagle!!! Pretty hard to slip one past this woman. I can imagine her slumped down behind her chattels, biting every coin and testing every note. Perhaps she might even consider a career in acting, she seems a perfect fit for "Shylock" in the Merchant of Venice. She must have her pound of flesh. The kid might even try his hand at "Antonio," once he gets out of prison that is.
I can also imagine the police for miles around being attracted to this incident like flies to XXXX. I would not be surprised if they even deployed an incident van for this shocking crime. Indeed, it is good to see everyone on their toes. They might even want to check the forged notes for drug residue, you never know....

Wonderful! Now I hope Mr. Kobayashi goes down to the nearest hospital and donates the contents of his stomach to those children (yes, even in America) who don't have the opportunity to receive three square meals a day.
What a disgrace, such acts of mindless consumerism should not be lauded, they should be condemned.

This is a bit of good news to start off the week. I hope they throw the book at him for this one. They should also tack on 5 years for absconding. Indeed, it would not worry me if he ended his life behind bars, because at the end of the day he is nothing more than a child-drugging pedophile.
And yes, there is a lesson to learn here. If you the crime, you should be prepared to do the time.

I would actually recommend that everybody get at least one tattoo. Having your blood group tattooed on the inside of your left upper arm is always a good idea. You never know when you might need a blood transfusion.

With regard to CT scans and tattoos, it seems that some comments have half hit the nail on the head. In this modern day and age, CT scans and MRI scan (that use magnetism) can be problematic with cheap tattoo inks that contain some nasty heavy metals. To put it bluntly, the magnetism of the machinery will suck the metals right out of you.
At the same folks, if this woman had her tattoos done with traditional Japanese inks, she might have a similar problem because many of the old colors used to use lead and other metals in them. Indeed, if you do some scrounging around about the history of tattoos in Japan, you would probably be quite surprised regarding the number of tattoo artists who died of heavy metal poisoning.

Top military officer flew to Europe to talk to the commander in the Afghanistan war about how many troops he needs to turn around the faltering campaign
What a biased leading paragraph. The campaign in Afghanistan is not faltering. It is just always stuck in neutral. Furthermore, it will continue to remain in neutral until people start accepting simple facts.
Firstly, overall troop numbers do not matter if a large part of such numbers are comprised of REMFs.
Secondly, politics and warfare should not be mixed. If the aim is to beat the Taliban, then the US and allied forces need to go for the throat. Let the politicians worry about the home front and the political will of the people. Commanders in theater should just get on with the job at hand, irrespective of the price to be paid in blood. That is an issue to be debated in Washington and not in the dugouts of Afghanistan.
Thirdly, the long boot of the US needs to be further inserted up the nether regions of the Pakistanis so that operations are constantly waged on those who would shelter the Taliban. If the Taliban and its allies want total war, the the US and its allies should oblige. Take off the kid gloves and take these clowns to the mat. The sooner this is done the better.

And why would we want to colonize Iran, anyway?
Actually the food is rather good. A bit heavy on the meat and herbs, but they do a very good kebab-type thing.
On a more serious note, I am a bit worried about comments like this coming from the President. With the ongoing commitments to Iraq and Afghanistan, the last thing the (US dominated) allies need is a bit of push and shove with Tehran. Unfortunately, Tehran realizes this and is upping the ante. I just hope Obama and friends handle this correctly. Iran can do all the saber-rattling it likes up to a point. Beyond that point, however, it should be slapped down so hard that its teeth rattle.

Sabiwabi either you are just baiting us or your understanding of history is sorely lacking. With regard to documents concerning the final solution of the jewish question, I might refer you to the notes of the Wansee Conference held on 20 January 1942 in Wansee Berlin. A numbered copy of these notes (the document itself had a restricted readers list) was passed to the British SOE and is now kept by the British Archives. They make rather interesting reading if you can get your hands on a copy. The Brits also have a rather good collection of film footage including an SS training film from mid 1943 for prospective camp guards that features the mass gassing of so-called "Untermensch" at Treblinka in early 1943 before the revolt by prisoners. The film in itself is rather interesting because it is both in German (for German-speaking candidates) and Russian (for those Russians/Ukrainians, etc) who volunteered to serve.

Seriously, why is this person still in the public spotlight. Surely the GOP would not consider her again for high office?
