This is how many times in the last 18 months? I swear, if this were an Olympic event, the Japanese would have the medals sown up. While feeling sorry for the child, I cannot help but think that the government should be doing something either at a legal or policy level. What an absolute disgrace.

Two years after Obama accepted a whopping $ 994, 795 in campaign contributions from Goldman Sachs.
Have to agree with that. Politicians (no matter the party) are always glad to receive donations from anybody. As long as the cash does have large traces of cocaine or bloodstains, all will be accepted.
That being said, however, something needs to be done to rein in those businesses that act either illegally or stupidly.

16 million is chump change. Toyota probably sees this money as money well spent. Paying up the fine will get them off the front pages (at least temporarily) and give them a little bit of space for maneuvering. Then again, this issue is not over by a long shot. Moreover, getting pillared by Consumer Reports is not going to help their case. Indeed, 16 million might just be the tip of a very big ice-berg.

I've seen this headline so many times that I wonder, how many leaders can they possibly have? Thousands? And their population is how many?
Of course you have seen this headline many times, because employment with this organization tends to be terminal.

The concern over security is a big issue. Although the Japanese press has not reported on it much, with old Eugene (Terre Blanche) being knocked off a couple of week's ago, and that idiot who is the head of ANC Youth Wing recommending that everybody start singing "Kill the Boer," the situation hardly seems conducive to welcoming guests from overseas.

Any chance of any serious comments, or is everybody just going split along party lines as usual?
Just out of interest, I found it interesting that some of these groups are not happy with being preached to by the Republican old guard (the reference made to Tommy Thompson. So what does this mean? Are there a core of people who are dissatisfied with Obama who are not your typical Rush Limbaugh-types? Would be interested to here your comments.

but obviously the perpetrator was only seeking attention because no one would seriously try to kill someone with a fruit knife. let's hope she gets some psychiatric care.
That's a fallacy, its the execution not the weapon. Ever seen somebody done up with a credit card?

And where is this happening, the planet Zog?
Sometimes I really cannot understand the childish and pedantic nature of US politics. Surely there must be more important issues to discuss.
Moreover, where is the intellectual depth to these issues? The founding fathers must be turning in their graves. Both sides seem to be racing to outdo each other in terms of their shallowness. Any sane individual can also tell you that such stupidity will end in violence.

Just a couple of points:
The line between right wing reactionaries and organized crime in this country is very blurred indeed. When these chaps are not pouncing about in their black/white trucks, you can probably find them down the local gang headquarters.
With regard to the banners, here is some insight into their views. Takeshima is an issue with South Korea. Unfortunately, however, whining will achieve nothing. The South Koreans have facilities on the island and "occupation is nine-tenths of the law." Furthermore, neither side gives a squat about the island itself, both are interested in the fish/mineral resources in the surrounding waters.
There is a banner against the idea of a national war memorial. Yes you read correctly. These people are against a national war memorial (one actually does exist already). This is because any national war memorial would undercut the prestige of Yasakuni Shrine (and the national association of bereaved families). As such, right wing groups and certain LDP politicians are in cahoots with each other on this issue. The interest of the LDP is that the bereaved families represent a reliable support group for the party.

Another wacko case
Very sad, but very true. What is it with such people? You had the chap down in Akihabara, the chap at the train station a couple of years ago. I just cannot get my head around this whole issue.

Fondling is not a crime if you have consent or its at least implied (sleeping wife). He did not have consent. That is the crime.
And what jurisdiction would that be in? So by your definition "marriage" as a construct offers a form of implied consent between two parties, even if one of those parties is unconscious (sleeping)? If that is the case, could you please define at what point such "consent" no longer applies? For example, under your interpretation of the law, what is the difference between "feeling somebody up" and "slapping some sense into them"? Surely, if such "consent" is implied, it must have a whole range of applications.
We do not condone this type of activity. If this incident in fact did take place, we will take appropriate measures to punish Mr Matsuo
Hate to break it to the fire brigade, but they are in no position to punish this person. If the acts in question were committed, this guy should go up in front of the court on a charge of assault. Furthermore, if the prosecutor has a bxner for the defendant he might even try for sexual assault.

Rather interesting post limbo, but I don't know about the following assumption:
If the government would do away with the short skirts and sailor uniforms and switch to a blazer and slacks combo then at least the younger girls would not be such a target for these perverts.
Because sooner or later the so-called entertainment industry would sexualize what ever came next. Changing uniforms, unfortunately, is only part of the solution.

Another hard-core criminal busted! Maybe if skirt length were more regulated, high school girls would be targeted less?
That's right, let's just blame the victims and brush off this whole issue with a blase comment. Bit of wink and a nod? So what should high-school girls be wearing Lars? Maybe a full-length burkha?

Probably a correct decision, however, doesn't the president actually have more important things to do than juggle semantics? Instead of concentrating on being politically correct (or at least not being politically insensitive), how about tackling some more important issues?

Difficult question. Having lived in both countries, I would have to say that the level of journalism in both seems to be on a downward spiral. In the US, the explosion of media outlets (cable TV, the Internet) has meant that there is a concerted race to target news at the lowest common denominator (the shallow end of the gene pool). This is very disheartening if you consider the journalist traditions of the country. In times past there were huge stories such as Watergate, etc. Now TV is just full of talking heads whose intellectual faculties are on par with your average educationally-challenged amoeba.
Meanwhile in Japan, journalism has never been much chop. This is because of its concentration in a very few hands, and the hand-feeding of information that goes on courtesy of the reporter-clubs system. Even NHK, the national broadcaster, has none of the independence that you see in the BBC or other national broadcasters. Rather, its news seems to consist of government-published propaganda and stories that are specifically crafted so the masses do not think for themselves.

The solution to this is simple. Just take it on the chin and 'fess up. Hang all those people responsible out to dry and take responsibility.
Like Japan with history in WW2, as long as the Catholic Church denies and tries to bury the past, there are people (the media) who will happily dig it up. Indeed, to paraphrase a former Australian politician, the role of the media is to "keep the bastards honest" and the Catholic Church should respect this. If they cannot, they should seek some form of recompense via legal avenues. Then again, stepping into a courtroom will open a whole new can of worms.
Anyway, as I said the other day, the Church, who teaches about the importance of telling the truth, needs to stop speaking out its collective .... Moreover, throwing around conspiracy theories only makes the Catholic Church look like a paranoid religious cult instead of one of the major religious forces on earth.

According to police, officials received a call Monday morning that two siblings were having a fight and one had gotten stabbed.
No the cops turned up after one of the participants was stabbed (1st victim). Then one of the police was stabbed (2nd) victim.

Just a couple of inflammatory remarks:
It would be interesting to know how many of the people bashing the police have actually been on the wrong end of a knife/shooting incident. My advice would be to zip it until you have experienced it first hand.
Forty officers seems to highlight a lack of aggression on the part of the cops. Instead of safety in numbers, it would have been a lot quicker if somebody had exercised some leadership.
Finally, I have to disagree with Cleo. Now I know that everybody loves the idea of nobody getting killed in such situations, however, once one of the officers was wounded, the cops should of had no second-thoughts about using deadly force. Why? Because the biggest mental barrier that people who are armed face is that first stab/shot, etc. After you have wounded/killed your first victim/target, it all becomes so much easier. The cops should have slotted this chap as soon as the first officer went down, because the felon has demonstrated that he has what it takes.
