Thanks for deleting my one liner. The point I was trying to make was the newsworthiness of this article. Who is this woman and what is the news value of the latest Hollywood starlet descending on a small Japanese town (with cameras in tow of course) and accosting the locals as they go about their business.
Don't get me wrong, I am definitely anti-whaling and the idea of Japanese fishermen shanking Flipper and his relatives makes me rather sick. The potential risks of eating such contaminated meat also worry me.
At the same time, however, couldn't the people who organized this media stunt at least get somebody with a little more intellectual weight behind them? Indeed, they would have been better off hiring Eric Cartman of South Park.

Like all societies, the ugly face of racism is alive and well in Australia. However, up until recent times it has been rather well hidden and very much adverse to the glare of publicity. Recently, however, among other issues Australia has had a nice little spat with India regarding the penchant of some uncouth individuals to engage in "Paki-Bashing" (excuse the term) as a form of entertainment. This is a very worrying development.
Now with regard to these police down in the State of Victoria (a state police force rather than the feds), as with all other people in uniform (whether military or otherwise), it is expected that their conduct regarding such matters be beyond reproach. To put this in layman's terms, I have no sympathy at all for any police who might loose their jobs as a result of this sordid affair. Indeed, the State Government should move to ensure that any and all such officers are prosecuted to the full extent of the law, them also losing any and all entitlements (including retirement benefits, etc) if found guilty of these accusations.

This is a truly sad day for democracy in the United States. The selfish actions of President Obama will force America's greatest orator to abandon the US in favor of a life in exile (in Costa Rica - a country with universal health coverage). As such, we bid a fond farewell to Rush Limbaugh and ask that the he not let the door hit him on his way out.

So the police are having it both ways. They are going to charge this chap with making a false declaration, while other instruments of Toyota Inc, sorry Japan Inc., look into whether there is really an issue or not.

Why does the word "world" come up in these quotes from Japanese? They consume 80%. Take the lead and stop blaming/relying on other countries because you have no backbone.
Indeed, another good comment.

Despite the image that hockey (and rugby) has, this guy is definitely wearing a mouth-guard. Back in the day, mouth-guards used to be transparent (who remembers fitting them yourself using hot water). Like everything else, however, these days mouth-guards comes in different colors and designs.

Agree with David on this. Rather than focusing on this story from the perspective of Japan getting one-over those countries that supported this ban, I think this whole issue offers Japan a golden opportunity to step up and take a leading role in developing global policies designed to responsibly manage fish resources.
Then again, Japan's history of skulduggery, manipulation of data, over-quota catches, and outright lies tend to make me rather pessimistic. Indeed, this could be the Southern Bluefin scandal all over again.

In two minds regarding this outcome. On one hand, I am glad that this proposal (in its current form) was defeated, because it might have led to a whole host of subsequent proposals regarding other species, species that are consumed by the less developed countries of the world.
On the other hand, however, I was rather disappointed by the tone of the reporting used vis-a-vis this issue and the defeat of the proposal. Rather than the shallow analysis offered by NHK on their morning news broadcasts (everyone can relax as Japan continues to eat tuna into extinction), I would have preferred a more cautious outlook regarding this whole issue. Indeed, rather than beating its chest and gloating at defeating both the Europeans and North America, as the country responsible for around 80% of the international trade in tuna, I would like to see Japan step up to the plate with some ideas regarding how this resource can be suitably managed. Then again, given Japan's past skulduggery regarding Southern Bluefin Tuna stocks, I am under no allusions that things will change significantly.

She's the 3rd category beer goddess.
That would probably depend on how much 3rd category beer one consumes.

As I have written on numerous occasions before, Japan's credibility regarding tuna issues has been seriously undermined by its behavior regarding South Bluefin Tuna stocks. Indeed, considering Japan's disgraceful behavior in that instance, this current issue might be a little bit of payback. Then again, it is interesting to see Australia lining up with Japan on this issue.

Has there been a revolution down at JT? The editorial staff up against the wall and all that? Seriously, after being bombarded day after day by stick-like waifs whose lack of substance all too often extends to above the shoulders, it is rather refreshing to see a photo like this. To use the slogan of a certain credit card, "Priceless." What does it for me is the zombie-like stare....

Pity this place has closed down. As somebody who did a stint as an army recruiting officer many years ago, it would have been interesting to see how the oft-maligned Japanese Self Defense Forces approached this problem.
Then again, it is pretty hard to get people on the recruiting track through casual drop-ins. Back in the day (I was responsible for officer-candidate recruiting), we had a much easier time working directly with schools. However, considering how the military as a career is looked down upon in Japan, I reckon it would be pretty tough to get bxms on seats in this country.

Compulsory chipping would allow the government to track down those who obey the law and ensure they pay. Those on the outside of the law will continue to breed, sell and fight dangerous breeds with little risk.
How little you understand. Microchips in dogs are for identification purposes not for tracking where the animals are.

Just picking up on the dog breed issue, I actually know somebody here in Japan with a Dog Argentino cross who got the dog out of Australia to avoid the heat. He had his local vet mark the dog down as something else.
Also, with regard to Dobies, those that I know in Japan are all very good specimens, then again, my younger son and our Golden Retriever were actually threatened by a clown with a badly-trained Dobie down at the local park a couple of years ago. To cut a long story short, they quickly changed their attitude when my elder son and our mastiff (Ben)returned from a toilet stop. To drive home the point, Ben even nonchalantly had a bit of stretch in order to show off his chiseled physique and his pearly whites. As subtle as a brick Ben is.
