A leader of non-Japanese descent would be very unlikely for some time to come. If a politician were from a discriminated Japanese minority group then no one would be allowed to mention it, and there would be no visible distinction so few people would even know.

About the closest I can think of is Yuriko Koike.

    Bring back Himiko.

There is a lot of research on arrogance (Google "self-enhancement") and there can be little doubt that Americans go in for it big time, and far more and far more vocally than Japanese.

It is not who anymore but, by how much. I think that a landslide will be generally positive and good for the economy.

the average Koji is left with their savings. But I think that companies may not wish to hire, and consumers may not wish to spend with low share prices.

Perhaps both should just forget about it since a lot of Japanese companies are not short of cash either? Is that possible?

Even if the link between the stock market can not be broken how impossible is it for the link between the Japanese stock market and wall street be broken?

Strange that this news is not more prominent and more people talking about it. Here we are in a record breaking stock market slump and it is not even top of the mornings' news-paper (mine anyway). Still hovering around 8600 I see.

    Amari da!

After ten years of recession, Japan just about crawls out of it to be plunged back into the dark ages by a lot of bad debt in the USA.

Americans leverage till they are blue in the face. What has that got to do with Japan? Exports as a percentage of GDP in Japan is small, smaller than in most other countries (e.g. Germany) but for some reason there is this myth that if US is in a bad way then Japapn is in a bad way too. I still have confidence in Japan.

Is there never going to be a time when Japan stocks are valued on their own merits, and that the nikkei does not rise and fall in tune to wall street? Is Japan so dependent on the US market?

Why these Nobel prizes at the same time?

It is almost as if the Nobel committee are bundling Japanese people together, when perhaps had then not been descendents of the Sun Goddess, they might have deserved two Nobel prizes (one for Nambu one for Kobayashi and Masakawa).

I find Japanese an easy language to learn, far easier than English.

The pronunciation is simple, the grammar is regular and the existance of Kanji (which computers will write and even read for you these days) allows even the vocabulary to be more systematic and regual, so about a thousand characters will allow the learner to read newspapers. Readin Japanese is so much easier than reading English is is unreal.

However, the formal language is difficult, even for Japanese. But in cross cultural communication situations desu-masu is usually sufficient.

I have been living in Japan for about 20 years and did not realise how dangerous Japanese hornets are till recently. Only this summer I directed a hose at a hornet (perhaps) nest in the eves of a hut. About 20 people or more die a year in Japan apparently. Hornets will often attack in groups if you approach their nest. As well as being painful and highly poisonous the sting contains a chemical that encourages other hornets to sting you. If it is your second sting occasion you may well have developed an allergic reaction. The most common cause of death is allergic shock. Be very scared of hornets, the monk got lucky. I hope his temple was insured.

I think that they find it difficult to trace his income. He does not have money in his bank account and the company of which he is a CEO claims not to pay him a salary. If he does not recieve a salary, presumably he does not pay income tax either.

Good idea. I think prices should be dependent upon cost. As well as being fair, it might encouage fatties to loose some of their flab - a good thing for everyone.

I read a paper which said that Mafia-type-organisations all provided a private policing service. They are a police force, or in a sense a government, for the illegal economy. If and when drugs were sold without mafia involvement then there is war on the streets, if cartels were formed or bribes made with out mafia then any of the partners could renage on the deal, but the "men of honour" make sure that there is honour even among theives. I think that Yakuza perform a very similar service, even if their history is very different.

The article points out that the Yakuza wear their symbols openly. Is this because the Yakuza are different to the Mafia, or because Japanese would like their black economy policed, while more idealist Americans would like to stamp out the black economy entirely?

According to the website JetBlue is a North American domestic carrier. It does not seem to fly to Japan. I wonder why this news is in the Japan Times.

I think that the Japanese desire to be cute has little to do with the fact that they can not "live up to the refined beauty that they feel Western women strive for." The ideals are different, but it is not as if cuteness is some sort of second best.

Posted in: I think many Japanese women feel that they can never live up to the refined beauty that they feel Western women strive for. So, instead, they shoot for a cute look, one that doesn’t require tall, curvaceous bodies and instead emphasizes girlishness.

I think that the Chinese should be able to keep the terrorists away from the athletes, so at the end of the day we will seem some sport and in that sense it will suceed as a televised spectator event.

As a sports tourism event that should bring in lots of foriegn tourists and showcase the facilities, culture, safety of China then the outlook does not look good.

    Fairandbalanced is funny.
