The Japanese are wide awake regarding the difference between the sexes, who want different things with some overlap: the men want sex, the women want children. This is obvious, but somehow Westerners often fail to see it, with their religion of "love." We are brought up to believe that "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" means the same as "He loves her, dobyu-" when in fact we are talking about very different things.

Does the cuckoo love the birds who's nest in which it lays its eggs? Do the cuckoo chicks love the birds that raise them? Your Japanese wife is a cuckoo, your children are cuckoo chicks. They are lovable even so all the same.

We have agreed that films are made about convicted killers. Some use material from the killers (e.g. those about Aileen Wuornos) some do not. Some are sympathetic, some are not. The important point is how this movie will portray Ichihashi and the events. From the Japan Times: [The production company] Sedic International's Kensuke Zushi said. "We have no intention of casting Ichihashi in a positive light."

I agree with MrExpatriate and not with realmind because it seems quite clear to me that the US is a threat to Iran.

If allowing rice to be freely imported from the US is included in the TPP then I think that it would spell either doom for Japanese rural communities or more likely an even higher level of government involvement in their subsidy. There is too much culture invested in rice production for it to be liberalised and imported from the US.

When the Japanese increase VAT their economy suffers. Japanese purse strings are often controlled by housewives who personally pay VAT, but do not personally pay income tax. That is why it makes sense to increase income tax and not VAT in Japan.

The debt is horrible but rather than raise tax I think that they should cut public spending and privatise as much as possible.

There are lots of films made about murderers, such as Gary Gilmore (Executioner's Song), Smith and Hickock (In Cold Blood).

If the possibility examined by John Becker were a reality, then current board members would surely know. They would know that Mr. Woodford had prior access to the information that he subsequently publicised upon his appointment as CEO, and they would also know if Mr. Woodford had used that prior knowledge to facilitate his promotion. But if this were the case, and the board members were aware that Mr. Woodford's motives were self-serving, would he be likely to step into the board room now and, far less, step out of it?

Mr. Woodford, if you must go to the board meeting, please wear a kelvar vest strong enough to prevent stabbing with a long sharp knife, and employ your own body guards. Do not rely on protection from the police, far less from other Olympus employees.

"also plans to attend a Olympus board meeting on Friday" This is like Kira Yoshinaka going to tea with the 47 Ronin. I hope Woodford wears some body armour and does not rely on the police for protection. His righteousness will not protect him. There are folks in the board room living on borrowed time and ample opportunity to tape knives under the table.

tmarie is right. If Woodford gets knifed in the board room it will be very bad for business. Now could be the time to short a Nikkei tracker fund.

"I think its a bit late for them to start thinking of taking him down isnt it?" Perhpas not, because there is still "honour," or brand image, involved. If the brokers of the deal are perceived as being ineffective at policing such deals, then people will be less likely to employ them in the future. I fear for Mr. Woodford.

The involvement of the "anti-social forces" makes sense. I don't think that it necessarily means that the money all went to organised crime. It could be that organised crime were involved in brokering the deal.

I read an persuasive article about "mafiosi" or organised-crime-in-general, that said that the primary function of Sicilian Mafia and mafiosi, was as a private police force, employed to police illegal deals. If for instance you pay a broker to take a big kickback and expect him to pass 90% of that kickback back to your company to use as a slush fund, then you are in a sticky situation because the broker can do a runner and you can't go to the police to stop him. The same goes for cartels. If you are in a cartel and all members agree to take it in turns to make the winning bid on government contracts, then if one member of the cartel suddenly breaks the deal, then the other members can not turn to the police. In these situations people turn to organised crime, those "men of honour," to police the deal. The organised crime syndicate takes another 10%, looks really scary and has a reputation for honour, and none of the people involved renage, or tell the legal police, because the illegal police will have them for toast. So when there is an illegal deal going on - such as in the creation of a slush fund to cover bad debts - it can pay, the company, to have organised crime involved.

All the Japanese wine that is sold in supermarkets near me (Yamaguchi) that I have tasted, tastes like fruity shuuhai (alcoholized fruit juice). But then I drink the Chilean that can be had for 400 yen a bottle.

Most posters seems to be thinking that the board were motivated out of self-interest, and that Mr. Woodford was not. I am not aware of good reasons why one would come to that conclusion, and it seems to me that the reverse could also be true.

I hope that no workers loose their job, no factories close down, and that if the share price continues at this level, Mr. Woodford expresses at least sincere regret.

If the share price stays at about this level it will be very difficult for him to persuade anyone that he acted in the best interests of his company, the worth of which has been drastically reduced, but, perhaps he will be able to pursuade those that lost their savings, that it was for the greater good of society that he told the media about the accounting malpractice that his colleagues were perpetrating.

While I still believe that the board acted in what they felt to be the best interest of the company, I don't condone crime. I would have board members apologize for any crime committed. But, and please correct me if I am wrong, it took one man to call out a crime that, until then, had no victims. Honesty is good. The livelihood of 40,000 workers is important too. I think that the board may have put those workers before honesty.

I hope he is well protected too. And I hope someone can turn Olympus around, but if they can't I hope Mr. Woodford apologies to the thousands, or tens of thousands of employees he will have put out of work, to the families and lives that he will have destroyed, through his upright, sterlng honesty.

All over the world goverments are spending too much, because politicians relfect the voices of local communities and all of them want some pork. And all over the world governments are going into massive debt, debt that our children will have to repay, as the politicians reflect the voices of the local communities.
