The current system in Japan actively punishes people for having babies Actually, I think it just punishes the women. Women get let go from jobs, have their hours cut back, can't find daycare if they actually work at a company that will keep them off after having kids. The men? Get a raise in salary.

Why do I get thumbs down for alerting people to where the food comes from?

I don't understand why anyone would expect the survivors in the earthquake and tsunami disaster areas to leave those areas which for many families has been their place for hundreds of years. Because they areas are inhabitable? Because the areas were dying anyway? Because tax money could be better spent at creating larger communities than a few middle of no where places full of old people with no income and nothing to prop up the area?

The money can only be used towards a house / land and education fees.

Yeah right. Vouchers I get, cash? Sadly some of them will be heading to pachinko and buying smokes instead of putting it towards their kids - which is why I think this silly kid's bonus needs to be put to an end. Put that money towards education and daycares.

What I don't get is why there is STILL mass construction for mansions and apartments. I live in a new areas and in a year there have been construction non-stop. Personally, I am looking forward to the cheaper houses and more land - finally get a garden.

Indeed stubborn. These people 'can't go home" again. Their homes, community... are gone. Why is tax money being spent on rebuilding an area that was dying in the first place and will never be like it was? Move to safe location and start over. It is 'hard" (I'm in an area I really don't enjoy for my husband) but when it comes to it, you make it what it is.

Home is where the heart is and where you make it. I don't get this whole "this is my hometown" notions and thinking it is more important that their health and family.

What is important to me? Family. Health. Happiness. Friends. That is it. Money, hometown, jobs, flashy goods meaning little to nothing to me. Shame others don't feel the same.

Perhaps they need to cut their overhead? I flew with ANA this past weekend in Japan and was expected to pay for a cup of coffee. With the price of the ticket, the coffee should be free. I expect to pay with a budget airline, not ANA. Smarten up or start filing for bankruptcy. No reason why these companies can fly and make profits with their fares while the giants can't.

Posted in: Cheaper fares are going to create more demand and escalate competition in the domestic market, which will be worrying for the current operators.

Have to laugh that this is "news". Haven't we known this for years? They spent about 30 mins on this last night and were interviewing women about having kids. None seemed to keen because they want to work. Hmmm... how about doing both? How about Japan supports those who do? They interviewed one working mom with an 8 month old and she commented that she would have more if she was promised daycare but as it was, she had a hard time finding a good place the first time.

Had a good chuckle at them showing omiai meetings for people in their 60s. Guess a women needs to get remarried/married to ensure she's going to get a handout from the government. Lord knows they don't have their own pension for the most part so need to sponge off some guy who has worked his butt off and paid.

Immigration, daycare, better wages for women... Things Japan should have been doing 20 years to deal with this problem. As usual, the government has not been proactive - and as of yet, hasn't even been reactive!

A lot of people suggested them for organics but then I learned they were still selling things from Tohoku - and most specifically, Fukushima. Just thought some people might like to know that before using them. Shame as I would love to use them.

Glad to add another to the list - his grandmother wasn't even told he was getting married because they thought it might kill her! I have met her once - now that she is mentally not there.

Don't know about Americans but my family was 100% supportive - though they worried their butts off due to his father. Japanese? No problem? Tojo (my nickname for him before they came around)? Huge problem. I give my family credit as they knew what he did to me and my husband and they were great when they met him. Sure my parents would be happier if I settled down with someone from the same country but the background doesn't matter in my family. They get mixed up with some Chinese/Japanese things - but then again, so do Japanese! Chopsticks anyone? ;) My parents haven't learned Japanese like some others I know - but do send Xmas cards, presents and the like. Overall, one big happy family. My PIL are planning on a trip to stay with my parents!

Crazy, from my understanding, many nurses going into day workings and vice versa (once trained).

I really cant see thousands of houses being built by volunteers.

Interesting because I think "Habitat for Humanity" does just this.

I have been told that close to a million people in Japan have nursing qualifications, yet only about 30% of those people actually work as nurses.

If Japan had more daycares for working moms, encouraged women to continue working and paid them a decent wage (and get rid of that day 1.3 salary cap), I think we'd see more in the field. It isn't very attractive is it - dealing with old people who are mentally unstable, have physical issues and well die in the end.

That should be burdening their kids. I have made it clear to my folks from years ago that they need to save their pennies as I won't be looking after them. And am already doing the same for myself! If we have kids, they'll never have to wipe my butt!

I don't know. I think parents have the responsibility of not burdening their parents. My grandmother is on a home because my mom got sick and tired of dealing with her calls for help and the like. My mom basically said "I can't handle the stress of looking after you and if you can't look after yourself, you need to pay someone to do it". My grandmother now lives in a home with freedom. She's got great company, plenty of visitors, free to come and go as she pleases as long as her health is okay. Japan needs to embrace this. People are living far too long in horrible health or mental states to have their family look after them.

My grandmother in law needs to be in a home. My FIL needs to get over himself being the chonan and him thinking it is his job to look after him. He's not giving her the care she needs - and I have been in tears watching the way she gets treated. It isn't his fault he can't care for her. He's not trained on how to lift, carry, baths... This women is sitting in a house worth a lot of money. Sell the house, pay for her care. They have enough to get her into a nice place as cheaper places are limited. They could visit her there everyday. Or, they could hire a private caregiver. But he won't. Instead, he plays the martyr. It would cost a heck of a lot of money - her money, but FIL won't. It's his "job" when in actual fact, my MIL gets shafted as she has to households to cook for and clean.

Modern medicine has created a monster with this. People with the mental wits but not the body, people with the body but not the mental capacity. I think a line needs to be drawn as to when it becomes ridiculous. If the guy lived the way my PIL do, I can see why he's snap - I can see why anyone would.

As yes, like you said, it isn't like a baby. Older people are heavier, need more care and can be very nasty and dangerous. Moms are young when looking after their kids. Kids looking after their parents are not. Mark my words, this problem is going to get much, much worse. Parents killing their kids, punks with no job preying on the weak and the ill....
