Such a shame that foreign long term residence in this country can't vote. If we could, we could actual hold the government accountable and question them on their spending.

How would that have helped anything?

People would have a little faith in the government and be able to make decisions based on information and not lies and cover ups? Here's the problem. People don't trust the government here so any inkling that there is a problem, people panic - and hoard food like the did all over Japan. If the government was more open about such things, people would be able to make decisions based on fact, not assumption that the government is holding back the worst of the news.

An example of this... The food I see from the Tohoku is probably safe. However, I won't even think of buying it because I don't trust the government when they tell me it is safe. If the government had come out from day one and said "This is bad, we aren't going to sell it and everything else is safe and certified!" and followed through on it, I would be okay with purchasing produce from Tohoku. What has happened though is "Everything is fine!". "Oh wait, yes, that beef was contaminated. Sorry." "Everything is okay now. Oh Except for that rice..." See the issue? People only panic when they don't know what is going on and aren't prepared for it. Lying to the public isn't preparing them or helping the matter in the future.

Net, I think many foreign countries would offer to help. Would, however, the Japanese government accept it? They have a very bad track record of saying no and going about screwing things up. Kobe, 3/11...

Which is exactly why I am not thinking highly of her. If my husband made a comment that makes it imply I am a simple beast who can be control by a carrot... he's be shown the door.

Fidaruzki, I understand where you are coming from but it seems wrong to "blame" western society for giving women enough power to be able to walk out of an unhealthy situation. If anything, that is a positive thing.

Perhaps they could get out of Tokyo? JT is does the same - everything is Tokyo based. I get it is the capital and largest city but many other great places out there.

I don't get it. Name me one other non-contact sport where people grunt? None that I can think of.

Yes and you'll fire anyone who gets in your little right leaning ways. Why the public can't see this man for the snake he is is beyond me.

Perhaps we could wait for more details before painting him as a wife beater? For all we know, he refused to buy her a brand new designer handbag so she killed him. Why do people on here jump to so many conclusion on such little info?

Oh so now they're admitting to a glitch and not just blaming the train disruption. Gotta love Japanese companies that lie bold face to the public and when the public calls them on it, outright changes the story. Pathetic.

Perhaps she needs to press the Korean government to share the money the Japanese government gave them to settle the issue?

She sounds like a vapid women going by these comments. He "finally" appreciates you? Why marry someone who doesn't? Why do you need to dangling a carrot from a stick? He's not a horse!

Losing? How about lost? Korea is what Japan was 40 years old with the fight and hunger to lead the pack. Now? Nothing. Blame the education system, society and the current business ethic and culture.

Any other decision might have led to mass panic, riots, anarchy and a situation similar to a 1945 Japan.

But I thought the Japanese didn't riot, didn't loot, didn't panic and waited in line in calmly fashion. Or at least, that is what the Japanese media would like us all to believe. I guess they like to ignore all the hoarding of goods that went on all over the country.

The government needs to be honest with the public. They haven't been honest - no shocker there. And I doubt if/when the "big one" hits Tokyo, they won't be prepared and it will be a free for all. Like last time. This time though, I hope they don't blame the foreigners and go on a killing spree.

I have no issues with paying more but like Nicky, think things need to be decided upon. 15% tax on food is crazy. Same goes for books, children's clothes, feminine products, meds...

If Japan wants to raise the rates like the UK and Canada, I want "free" medical care. None of this crap where I have to pay when at doctor's visits. We get taxed a lot here with "hidden" taxes but the government doesn't give enough back. Raising it just means they have more to waste. Reforms and cuts need to be made. Will they do that though? Fat cats with cream. The diet needs to take pay cuts, the bottled water at meetings needs to be done away with, as does the government housing for government workers, roads to nowhere...

It also casts doubt about whether the government was sufficiently prepared to cope with what could have been an evacuation of unprecedented scale.

Casts?? Ha! If there is one thing I am sure if, the government is not prepared to deal with an evacuation.

Glad to see they kept notes during thee meetings...

For a country without any army to maintain Do you think the defense force is voluntary? 3% of the budget gone just like that. I don't mind paying for it. What I mind is paying for the roads to nowhere, the slush-funds, their unrecorded meetings...

NTT needs to come to grips with tech and move forward. Overpriced for the services you get - in all realms by it landlines, mobile, cable, internet...

**In the UK, VAT is 20%. Oz 10% China 17% Denmark 25% NZ 15%

Even Albania's sales tax (10%) is higher than Japan's!**

It doesn't matter what tax rates are in other countries - we pay for things out of pocket that the UK and the like don't - like doctor visits! The problem is the wasteful spending by the government. All those roads to nowhere with huge dams and bridges? Needless. Cut that crap before raising the taxes - and diet members can take a nice big pay cut too!

Actually most Canadians are looking at other countries right now and are sitting comfortably. Many don't like Harper and his government but he's got a majority vote, has won reelection and as it is, Canada has probably come out the best of the economic issues. Indeed there are people that you speak of but they don't last very long as the pubic gets rid of them. Shame Japan just lets the family torch be passed down and around. People deserve the government they have. If Japan wants a decent government, they need to start holding them accountable rather than the "shoganai" attitude that is so prevalent here.
