Well said GW!
I am no fan of Noda but the revolving door has got to stop if Japan wants to deal with the problems. The opposition needs to shut the hell up as they are the cause of all of this. Rein in the spending, the slush funds, the bribing and start looking at things like women's rights in this country. The happier the women, the more economic independence they have, the more kids they'll have and more people to pay for my retirement in another 30 years! Get cracking!!

**Japan did not need 3/11 to "learn" about quakes. As you might have noticed, most buildings did just fine on 3/11; it was the tsunami that caused the damage.
I don´t know if you have been here that long, but if you remember the Kobe quake you will also remember the massive re-enforcement of infrastructure buildings in Tokyo that was initiated after that. I expect the damage in Tokyo to be considerable less than in Kobe.**
I guess all that flapping around with what to do after the quake was okay for you. Not for me. I would prefer schools and companies know where they need to go and what to do after a quake. As it stands now, I have seen zero new signs or training at any of the places I work.
You also need to take into account that NEW buildings are under the new guidelines. Plenty of buildings in Tokyo are older and not going to withstand strong quakes. Heck, take a look at many of the old Mori buildings in Toranomon. Mori is kicking people out but they have hundreds of buildings that are not up to standards. Thousands of people in those buildings.
You also have to look at the day to day of many buildings. Fire exit closed up or blocked, narrow stairs cases, people who don't know what to do in case of an earthquake. Indeed changes have happened since Kobe but in my opinion, not near enough has been done.

"{otentially dangerous painkilling drugs" No, Cleo no stance at all there....
Indeed, there is no harm in looking at the options - thing is, options are limited in Japan while many other countries offer more. Again, women not being placed very highly on the totem pole. I can promise you that if men in this country gave birth, epidurals would be offered at every hospital, not just a select few. Also willing to bet they'd be free. I also know more than a few who went to places that offered them, were told they would get them and when it came to the day, the anesthetist wasn't available.
Perhaps I am just one of those "entitled" people who thinks they deserve more with regards to medical options... i can live with that.

You listed the US as one country that had a better society than Japan Oh, I don't think I did. I wasn't the one that brought the US into the debate if you go back and read. I personally wouldn't want to live in the US for various reasons, some of which are being discussed here. That being said, just because I don't want to live there doesn't mean I think Japan is better.

I simply stated in my original post that meth, cocaine and heroin were more dangerous than tobacco and alcohol (completely true).
Sorry, what? You can't be serious. You really need to read up more on the issues surrounding drinking if you think alcoholism is the only problem. I also never mentioned that Japan is the only country with problems with alcohol.
You just keep rehashing everything. Like I said last time, "By all means, think Japan is the best place on earth for you to live. I will certainly disagree."

Cleo, take the stance if you like - I know many do - but I would like the choice. And no, I don't think they "know" more about it. Many don't know about it, nor care about it. As far as I am concerned, until that kid is out, I have the right over my body. You can debate this if you like but I won't agree with you.

Title shouldn't concentrate on age and sex.
It shouldn't but we all know it does in Japan. Step in the right direction. I have no idea what your issues are with someone who is looking out and wants to improve society.

Much like how they haven't kept notes from meetings. Pathetic! God I am sick of writing that but it is true. Pathetic. They care more about saving face than they do about their people.

Shouldn't this have been done on day one? First they don't want foreign help and now that they realised they are well over their head... Better late than nothing I guess.

Has Japan learned from 3/11 on how to deal with quakes? I hope people in Tokyo are prepared to fend for themselves if god forbid one does occur based on what happened in Tohoku and Kobe.
No real surprise though, is it? Long overdue.

“I want to work on expanding childcare and other services,” the Mainichi Shimbun quoted Koshi as telling cheering supporters late Sunday.
Finally someone in government with clear priorities! I wish her luck. It must not have been easy to deal with all the old ossans and I expect she's going to have a hell of a battle on her hands and wish her the best of luck. Japan needs more women like her!

Where did I say alchohol and smoking was 'safe'? First of all, smoking is nowhere near as socially destructive as drink, never mind the harder drugs. And no alcoholism doesn't even compare to the hell of crystal meth, cocaine or heroin addiction in how they ravage communities and cause crime. And I'm not defending alcohol either, I don't drink, because I think it's stupid. I don't think I said you said it was "safe". You do get that alcohol splits up for families that the drugs you mentioned, don't you? If you can't see how alcohol is more socially damaging than hard drugs, perhaps you need to read up on the topic a bit more.
Indeed I have concerns about other countries but having just returned from one that you mentioned, no, I didn't worry about my day to day life while there. My food was safe, the medical care was for EVERYONE, not just those that paid into the scheme, the government was kept in check by the public...
As for your epidural comment, no, you just can't get one. You have to such for a place that offers one and then pay a heck of a lot of money for it. You are trivializing the issue of how women are treated here - even though you agree it is a problem.
"...but they do exist, their relative lack in quantity is simply a reflection of most mothers staying at home to mind their children." "All that is possible..." You really don't get it, do you? I have known countless women now who have had to quit their jobs because they couldn't find daycare or their companies wouldn't give them the legal amount of time off.
Your food link goes against what you're stating. The fact that people are taking it into their own hands is because the people don't trust their government. Great society when the fat cats look out for themselves and the public has to fend for itself - while still allowing those fat cats to lap up the cream at the taxpayer's expense.
Japan is "safe"? I guess if you don't count groping and the sexual harassment that women face here. "Safe" isn't just physical safety.
Indeed, old people are treated horribly around the world but at least in some nations, there is a lot more care and support for them and their family than there is here.
People are just using their money to buy brand name bags. Shame they aren't investing it or buying things that are nothing but mere symbols of greed.
BY all means, think Japan is the best place on earth for you to live. I will certainly disagree.

Right. All we ever hear about Osaka is how unique and different it is. Now this one city represents all of Japan, as much as say, Tokyo.
You do get that based on population Osaka and Tokyo are pretty representative of Japan? How could you not understand that? People argue this point and try and point of the inaka but in terms of population, cities are def where it is at for the "real" Japan.
I also don't hear people going on about how "unique" Osaka is. Japan? far too often. Osaka? Never once in my life. Osaka has certain traits but that hardly makes it "unique". I would also say it certainly isn't a hot spot for hate crimes. Tokyo, with a much larger foreign population and much more at stake, would certainly by the city for that. Regardless, who cares what city it is? An innocent man lost his life to a bunch of thugs. Regardless of where it happened, it is a tragedy.

Honest to god if people keep going on and on about how well Japan is doing after this I may scream. It was bad enough that the tsunami and earthquake killed so many people but now the government and some companies seem hell bent on creating more deaths all in the name of money and pride. Japan and the Japanese should be hanging their head in shame for allowing their government and companies to behave like this. I haven't seen anything from the public in terms of demeans from the company nor the government. Not that many media outlets would show it anyway since they're all under control. People call me a Japan basher but christ, how can people sit by and watch all this happen and not have an ounce of anger?
Since day one it has been nothing but lies from TEPCO, the government and the media.

Some of your links aren't working. If you look at the Montreal link, easy to tell that that is an old house and few would be built like that these days.
For your Austria one, you can clearly see the guy is attached to a safety harness - and judging from the size of the roof in the pic, I don't think that is a house. Certainly not all houses have the best designs in these countries but never in my life has my family ever had to get up on the rood and shovel - nor has anyone who has ever lived around me. The only time I have seen it is on the news back home - older houses and certainly nothing that was built in the last 30 years.

** So why is that not a problem in Canada, northern Europe and other snowy places where people don't go on their roofs?
Are the houses in Canada, northern Europe and other snowy places made of wood?
** They are made from wood but the design is much, much better. The roofs here are not sloped near as much for the snow to fall off. It is poor design and building - nothing new here though. Plenty of flat roof houses and "mansions" being built which is not good. Neither is the traditional type style which is said to kill most victims in earthquakes due to their weight. Housing companies really need to start looking at better designs for earthquakes and elements.
RIP to the man and sympathies to the family. Been watching on the news and they've been showing people up on roofs with zero safety precautions. Surprised there hasn't been more deaths to be honest.

**Hindsight is and always will be 20/20.
If any of the posters predicted this and actually posted something to this before the fact, I would agree that person can claim lack of common sense to the Japanese government. For the rest..... Hindsight is always 20/20.** Plenty iof us on here have stated time and time again that everything from that area needs to be kept in that area. We've also stated time and time again that people in the area need to be moved so no, you're comments here are wrong. Many of us predicted this very thing happening. Not shocking to anyone here who knows anything about this government and not caring nor doing what is best for the public.
