Sakula, no one will hire more FT - you can't fire FT after a period of years, they have a right to certain things - like pension and health care... Not going to happen. This happened about six years ago when the union wanted befits for eikaiwa teachers. The companies agreed and limited hours for most. Those that did get "ft" were angry because many of them didn't plan on staying in Japan and then had to pay more out of pocket for taxes and like. More work, less money for it. Didn't make anyone happen - and is one of the reasons I don't think you see FT eikaiwa positions all that often now.

So cut working hours for those close to the 30 hours, high more staff, lower the unemployment rate?

new guidelines to make it easier for more part-time employees to become eligible for health insurance and pension programs.

It is pretty easy as it is. Head to city hall, fill out of the paper for the kokumin nenkin/hoken. Pay your money. Get a hard and voila. Heath care and pension. I am a PT worker (three places) and I managed to get with the program. Those who don't either don't want to pay or don't make enough money to pay - so this does nothing to help them anyway. Waste of time. Plenty of other issues they could spend their time and our tax money on.

The funny thing with speaking Japanese... the better I speak the language... the less I'm complimented on it. I find the better you speak it, the worse you get treated in some cases. You aren't that cute, helpless little foreigner that they can talk about in front of you, assume that you need their help... You become that foreigner who can voice your opinion and disturb the "wa" when voicing said opinion. Perhaps it is just a phase but I miss the days of smiling like an idiot and pointing to things and not being upset when people tried to speak English to me. Now? I spoke to you in Japanese, you obviously understood what I said but now you try it on and repeat my order back in Japanese - or worse yet, repeat it back to the Japanese person with me?

If your fiance is Asian, how can they tell she isn't Japanese anyway? Indians, Vietnamese, Filipinos... All asian, none Japanese looking...

Wait, Yuri's brotheris getting money now and they complain about it? Unreal.

Indeed the rape is on a long list of thing. But Japanese nationals/Okinawans ALSO have a long list of things done wrong. People keep harping on the Americans while failing to look at what their fellow countrymen have done and continue to do. Like I said, blame Tokyo, take it up with them, not the US.

It feels to good to verbally beat up these people, right? How is thinking it is sad that a 23 year old has basically just thrown her life and career under the bus beating them up? If anything I feel sympathy.

Tmarie- What cracks me up is that while these parents are spouting the virtues of running around semi naked in freezing weather, they themselves probably have more layers on than you have! Anyway, must dash! Time for my nightly romp in the garden dressed in ancient ritual thongs complete with tassles!

    Haha!

Some of the schools I worked at would remove the heater from the room to punish the kids. No heater for a week. What kind of messed up mentality is that? Teachers would wear their winter jackets to teach and the kids would... freeze. Unfair and if anyone EVER tried that crap with my kid, there would be numerous phone calls and meetings until they got so sick of me they turned the heat back on!!

I am going for a run. In tights!

Sam and Nicky well said. People are always so quick to jump on the teachers. It shouldn't be a teacher's job to teach kids manners and how to behave properly. That should be done by the parents. At home. Long before the kids start school.

The thing is, Japan's whole entire working system in built on bullying. Get rid of sempai/kohai, automatic respect for elders and promote people who deserve to be promoted, not those who have been there the longest. Watching teachers at my former school shocked me. Petty, vindictive and bullies. How can anyone expect the kids not to bully when the adults here haven't yet learned not to?

The organizers will look after her for sure.

    You sure about that??

Poor thing. Sounds painful but yes, why was she able to be injured?

I do belive this story is linked to the one we read a few months back about Lebanese and Middle eastern people in Canada being rounded up and deported. Scary.

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about if you that is what happen.

So no comments about the jeitai plane that had to make an emergency stop at the Nagoya Airport? Why are there never protests about the Japanese planes and bases?!

Oh I agree with you - I think the parents are loons! Just like I think the parents here are loons when they try and tell me that having little Taro in shorts in the dead of winter is character and strength building!

If they had central heating and warm building, I wouldn't have an issue with it - I wore t-shirts in winter in Canada as the buildings are warm inside. Here? I am wrapped like a mummy and STILL freezing my butt off!

She owes us no explanation. She owes the press no explanation. She lied and she has every right as these paparazzi scum and their fans pry information they most certainly DO NOThave the right to. They don't "owe" us anything but you have to remember that they are only famous for selling their souls to the public and make a living off of being in the public eye. How about not working in the entertainment industry if they value their privacy. You can't have it both ways.

Rather convenient timing with both having projects coming out. I doubt it was planned and if it was, good luck to them but marrying and having kids so young doesn't exactly have a great track record here, does it?

Zesta, very good point. That rape was YEARS ago and gets brought up ALL the time. Funny, I think if you looked at rape stats and compared the numbers the locals would come out on top in terms of the numbers. Was it disgusting? Indeed but failing back on that just belittles the actual victim and overlooks the reasons why they are always fighting about the bases. I get that Okinawans don't like the bases but blame Tokyo, not the US. They can also blame their local politicians who are never willing to budge - more interested in their 15 mins that actually solving the issues.

I certainly get treated differently and any visible minority who says that don't or haven't is lying. Sometimes I get treated better than the locals, other times it is obvious I am getting treated worse. Take the good with the bad I guess.

My husband is so sick and tired of the chopstick comments, the Japanese comments, the questions about my country, the questions about our marriage that he now starts giving it back and comments that they wouldn't make such comments or ask such questions to the locals so why on earth would they think it is okay to ask/say such things to me. Thank god for that because I am so sick and tired of the same crap that I no longer smile sweetly and say thank you when the person speaking to me CAN'T use chopsticks properly and keeps making comments like "zenzen daijobu".

Of course they aren't happy. Being happy would mean not getting their name in the newspaper and pretending that they actually care about the people and not their power - or lack there of.

So long as they are happy with that arrangement, leave them be. Are they though? Consider a mere few weeks ago they denied being together and now they are expecting a kid and planning a wedding... I give them a few years. She might very well be over the moon but I doubt he is.

Sam, this kid was out for a limited time. Kids in Japan are stuck in these outfits ALL day and sometimes in rooms with no heat. Socks are thing, shorts don't do much and hats are not allowed inside. I'm not agreeing with this dad but I am having a bit of a chuckle that people are outraged at this but see kids running around in pretty much the same thing and don't bat an eye.

I'm from Canada so trust me, well aware of how heat escapes and what you can so to stay warm! Hence me thinking the uniforms here for the kiddies is appalling.
