**5 days of no food and water....but then the Japanese military had asked them to surrender peacefully but the US forces with their slaves Filipinos decided to fight to the death and inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese army. When they ran out of ammo, they decided to surrender. In return, the Japanese army decided to have their revenge by having them march for 5 days without food and water.

This is war. And its a good thing they were not massacred.**

Okay, so let's replace a few things and see how you feel about it after reading.

The American military had asked them to surrender peacefully but the Japanese forces, who used sex slaves from China and Korea, decided to fight to the death and inflicted heavy casualties on the American army. When they still refused to surrender the Americans decided to have their revenge by dropping bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, enforcing Japan to surrender. Instead of taking revenge after the surrender, the Japanese propper up the government and invested in the country.

Now see, with the story, Japan doesn't get to play victim. You can't have it both ways.

Didn't Blackwater operation in Afganistan get busted for hiring a Filipino prostitute and used govermenet funds to support them?

Having women provide services of their own free will is not the same as kidnapping and rape. Hashimoto is condoning rape. Get it? Rape. Not paid sexual service.

His comments towards Okinawa are disgusting. Do you think Hashi would be supportive if the US military started kidnapping and raping numerous women from Japan? I highly, highly doubt it.

Indeed, Smith. Are they distancing themselves from here because what he said was wrong or because they want to continue denying it all?

    **Because she's a woman. **

And??? She's one of a handful who has undergone such operations so def not "all" women are benefitting from this.

I'd also like to ad that the literacy rate here is dropping. My average uni student writes things in easy kanji or hiragana and often asks other students how to write something in Japanese. Add in the katakana version for things and I don't think the Japanese language is doing so well even with the young Japanese.

But going beyond that, if I met someone in my native Australia who had been living there for than five- ten years and could not speak at a general conversation level then what would I think of them...? What you you think?

I would think that since they've lived there that long and manage, it appears they don't really have a need.

If Japan really wanted to improve the language skills of foreigners they might want to oh, I don't know, stop having city/ward Japanese lessons at 11:00 on Wednesdays when no one can attend, start looking at their teacher trainer, look at the quality of textbooks... Let's be honest, much like Japanese learning English, those who manage to learn Japanese fluently do it inspite of the materials out there. Teachers, textbooks and materials here for Japanese are often 30 years behind those of other languages. The methods are outdated and the price they charge here for schools is crazy. Sorry but Japan really isn't offering any incentive to the average Joe who lives here.

The Fukushima fishery industry is done for.

Well let's be honest, it should've been done in 3/11 two years ago but...

Asking for permission? Guess they have so much of it that they knew they couldn't get away with claiming things were "leaking". And ask the fisheries? They shouldn't be asked as they shouldn't even be fishing. How about asking the US, Canada and anyone else who borders on an ocean.

Yes and perhaps you should understand that the Kardshians are only "popular" because it's like watching the scene of an accident. You know you shouldn't watch but just can't not.

Really? They need to be told that? Perhaps the schools system need to work on critical thinking - or better yet, the parents could work on it.

a simple mugging would hardly make to more than a one-liner buried back in the local pages, if at all.

That might be so but this was obviously a slow news days as there are numerous muggings in Japan daily. They just don't make the news. Do you think all those signs around stations about pick pocketing and muggings are just preventative measures?? Come on guys. Japan might not be nearly as dangerous as some of the places we grew up (in terms of violent crime, sexual assault is another matter) but you've got to be silly if you think this is a one off case.

Allow folks to marry whom they want regardless of gender, sexual orientation...

“This is a victory for all women in Hong Kong.” Um, how so? If she said for transsexuals, lesbians, gays... I would agree but all women?? Why?

**Why you should not expand your mind or learn about another culture. **

Not speaking the language doesn't mean you can't learn about another culture or expand your mind.

Language is all about intelligibility anyway, no?

As malfupete points out, little kiddies can do it.

Little kiddies can speak little kiddie Japanese. They can't really read, can't really write and have to spend 12 years in the public school system learning kanji. Not exactly a great example. You're average eight year old can't read most of the train advertisements nor a standard newspaper.

Frankly, I found the better my Japanese got, the more annoyed I became with the place. Ignorance is bliss and when I didn't understand the shallow conversations and yammering on about stupid things, the better I thought this place was. Nothing like being able to understand TV shows here to make the rose tinted glasses fall off and shatter.

Lifeguards and pool safety here are a joke. At the pools I've been to they're usually old farts who couldn't lift a kid out of the pool if their lives depended on it. As a former lifeguard I am always shocked at how lax the rules are and how untrained the folks seem to be. The only thing they are good at is making sure everyone gets out of the pool for that damn radio taiso.

RIP. 19 is far too young.

Any helment?? Look, there are some jerk drivers out there but since my husband was hit a "cyclist" this weekend (uni student on the sidewalk, in the rain, umbrella, no helmet who came flying down a hit and ran into our stopped car) I can tell you that regardless of who is really at fault here, the driver will be blamed. THIS is why cyclist - and pedestrians - behave the way they do. ZERO responsibility. For all we know this kid could have biked out AFTER this guy started turning. The driver could have no been paying attention. Various things that could have led to that but let's all agree that a) bike safety here is pathetic, b) always blaming the driver is pathetic c) driving safety here is pathetic.

And shall we ask if there was a parent with her? Doesn't sound it as they usually mention it. If there was not, let's add crap parenting to my list of things to agree on.

So they blame HER? Yes, I'm sure she came up with the idea, filmed it, edited it, produced it... perhaps they could go after the MEN who came up with this

And yes, that is exactly what it is supposed to imply. So much for their "clean" imagine. Guess the head shaving didn't get the international fame they were hoping for.
