**If it is true, nobody can accuse her of divorcing him. **

Sure we can. SHE initiated the divorce. If he is gay, I highly doubt she didn't know. Better to be a divorced 30 something in this country than a single one... Her handlers certainly know that - added points that they managed to rope in a foreigner to play the part.

Let the exodus of Japanese companies relocation to Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines begin!

It already has - why do you think Japan cared so much about the floods in Thailand.

Nails in the coffin... suicide mission... Why to go Japan!

How about their bigwigs give back some of the millions they have made over the years running inept plants? How about the government takes over TEPCO and we can stop hearing about them and have some sort of regulation - I know, I am shaking my head while writing that but better than what we have now, no?

Japanese culture, ways of thinking and looking at the world are 180 degree polar opposites from an Austrian who probably had little appreciation of Japanese ways, to begin with.

It amazes me that in the year 2012 some people cling to this crap. Yes, Japan oh so mysterious and interesting. Please. If that was the case, no international marriages would work and all Japanese only ones would.

Have you ever thought that little Ms. Diva just wasn't getting her demands met, had a few temper tantrums and left? Based on the jchicks, gmale relationships I have seen, not all that uncommon. If she agreed to live in the US SHE was the problem, not him. Unfair to make promises you can't keep.

** @tmarie - Interesting. The ones I've met/taught are very pro-Chinese government and will argue at the drop of a hat abotu how great it is - all the while studying abroad...

supporting one's govt and supporting one's educational system seem like a different matter.**

Who said anything about the education system? The way I see it, the ones who are able to get out and study come from wealthy backgrounds so of course, don't see a problem with the system. They aren't the ones being locked up based on religion, creed... What do they care? Personally, I find they lack an empathy for those who have it worse off than they do. I find that sad - though no surprising based on China's value that human life isn't worth much.

Many Chinese students I have met here did not want to talk anything about their government. They are afraid.

Indeed he did - and he made an apology and everyone forgave him and now go on about what a great PM he was. Idiots.

People act like they are entitled to know about the private lives of others and think their agents, scumbag papparazzi and their ilk who asked Ayumi these questions, are just people doing an honest day's work. Not remotely. Ayumi owes no explanations to the tabloids and other press. But she has to say something or get hounded.

An issue that kind kind of statement was that is she wanted her privacy in the first place, she didn't need to talk about her engagement nor her wedding. There are plenty of singers, actors... in the "business" who don't talk about their personal lives. Hamasaki on the other hand does. If she didn't want people to make a big deal out of it, she didn't need to release a statement or make comments. I am willing to bet she's got something coming up and any publicity for her is good publicity. Making her sound as if she is a victim of the press is incorrect. SHE called them, not the other way around.

It is another vague word that can be used to describe pretty much anything they want to when it suits them. Let's all gather around and use this word as if it has some string meaning so we can hold our head up high and pretend we are superior to other cultures and countries... Silly foreigners, you don't understand the wonders of the Japanese language...

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry knew about it on December 28, 2011 when the city emailed the Ministry asking for guidance, but didn't do anything until January 10, 2012 because it was New Year's Day holiday and then a long weekend on January 7, 8 and 9.

Heads should roll for this. And they would - in any other country but since this is Japan, carry on folks, carry on. I get more disgusted with this country's government as the days go by. And I get disgusted with the public for allow their government to continue the way it is.

**But sadly the only people I have me who are outraged enough to wish to take action are foreingers. Oddly enough the people with the most ability to just walk away from this are the ones who would be willing to go out on a personal limb to fight for change.

Meanwhile my Japanese friends are equally burdened, disillusioned and outraged. Yet I have not heard a single person raise even the slightest possibility or suggestion that the are prepared to do anything about it other than carry on gripeing.**

Well said. I have personally been verbally attacked by "friends" for commenting on the issue and pointing out how pathetic the government is here. They'll defend their country and their crappy government to "us". Pride is a b@itch. It is certainly what is doing this country in. That and greed.

The Japanese are one of the only "people" I know who seem to enjoy wallowing in self pity and cling to their pride rather than address the issues.

Oh I am soooo shocked. Sarcasm off. What does 3/11 have anything to do with her relationship and marriage? A rather convenient excuse that won't make the public turn on her.

I don't actually think family ever was core - the job has always, always come first - be it samurai, ninjas, farmers, fishermen... Marriages were arranged, husbands often gone for long periods of time, sleeping with others was common... There is no history of family "values" here at all. There is a history of carrying on a family name but that isn't anything the same has putting family first.

I agree that they need to get their heads out of the sand and look at what is going on but no one is teaching them to do that in the present education system. Much easier to control large groups of people when they are uneducated and unknowing. The government here gets hand down to family generations. They don't care about the public, they only care about keeping their name and family name in power. It is sad and pathetic. Sadly, those of us that live here are paying the price - and know better. Which is probably why they won't give us the vote.

Everyday I speak to my students about current events. Very few have any idea about what is going on. Thankfully I am able to get through to some of them - and there are a few in every class that "get it" . Sadly though, I have to wonder if those who get it do anything about it.

This whole "we suffer as one nation" is a joke. People can say that but it isn't true. I wasn't here for 3/11 but when I came back, I would never have known anything happened if I didn't watch the news. My city and family and friends have had ZERO effects from 3/11 except for the issues with food. Again, that is poor government, not the tsunami nor the earthquake. The nuclear issue is because of the government, not mother nature.

"Jumpfree" means more barriers and a cost that burdens us. How about people seek help or go somewhere a little less public?

Because they make the rule s- and then ignore them and make ones that suit them. You've got to remember that Koizumi wasn't even paying into the national pension/health care when he was PM. How twisted is that??

How the hell could the quarry which is within the no-go zone ship out gravel just a month after the disaster? Was the quarry's warehouse outside?

Easy. Go in, take what you want. Leave. With no punishments being handed out and people looking the other way for cash, why not? It is sickening.

I would LOVE to get out of this country right now. Just when you think it can't get any worse the people and the government step it up a notch and it does.

I'm thinking some of you complaining about drinking must live in Tokyo. I am appealed by the prices of a drink in a bar/pub in Tokyo. The rest of the country doesn't pay what you guys pay. 500 for a draft here no problem. Maybe 700-800 for an import. You guys pay about 1200 which is a shocker. I don't think you guys make more than the rest of us in terms of % to cover that. If you want to live in Tokyo though, you pay the price. Which is why I would never even dream of living there. Rip off capital of the world. London is cheap in certain places - all depends on where you go.
