We LOVE the bases but we HATE that you make us take them...just...makes...no...sense.

"us" again, eh? Seems you didn't learn from your own lecture.

Sorry but ONE drink is one drink too many when it comes to driving. Throw the book at him.

**Always felt safe with cars, but the bicyclists in this country really need mandatory training. Everyone would be better off. **

I'm glad you've felt safe with cars. I, on the other hand fear everyone and everything I have to share the road/sidewalk with. The drivers are on their phones, the kids are bouncing around, they aren't paying attention, the bikers are coming at me and expect me to go around them, the pedestrians walk out of buildings without looking, cross right in front of me... How on earth there aren't more deaths here re beyond me.

And King, I agree with you on this point - the rules need to be changed as in terms of who is at fault. Two kids on a bike, no light in the dark, driving the wrong way? Sorry but that driver shouldn't be charged - if that was what happened. If it was daylight, they were on two bikes and follow traffic rules, charge the driver. The drivers shouldn't always be the one that gets faulted - not with the nutters walking/biking around.

I thought the car companies has to pay back their loans - and did so. Guess I missed something. Anyone who drives a GM or Ford is an idiot. Much better trucks out there.

Kudos for stopping - and not trying to blame the victims here at all but where were they biking and what were they wearing? I bike on the road and am lit up like an Xmas tree. I have had people on bikes coming the opposite way with no lights on all in black and I've nearly hit them - which would be painful but a car? Damn! Japan needs to start dealing with bike safety here - and drivers following the rules. Glad to hear this guy stopped.

RIP the two boys. That poor driver. He must be heartbroken.

Is anyone surprised by this? Before my time, not my country and I know he couldn't keep it in his pants.

Japan Tobacco has struggled not to be the bad guy. They ARE the bad guy. Them and the government. They can dress it up as much as they want but they are the ones the push these products. I am disgusted that they appear on TV during sports events and the like. I am disgusted that the government still has its dirty paws in with them - though I guess they see money. I see more money needing to be spent on health care. It costs US, the taxpayers, because the government won't clamp down.

And why the need to be "polite"? Oh right, because many of the ossans in the government are heavy smokers and want their fix rather than stop the spread of an unhealthy habit. I wish this country would come to their senses and ban smoking in restaurants, cafes, bars... Getting better but still a very long way to go.

King, what is your issue with this? You seem to always blame the dead person.

The women was ON a crosswalk of all places. We have no idea if they were running the red light or is she was. Regardless of who was running the light, you STOP when you have an accident. No questions asked. Indeed, Japan has some messed up laws with regards to this because it seems better for many to try their luck and run. The law needs to be changed but what kind of human hits another human and takes off? That's not humanity at all. Three cars? Sick.

With regards to driving stopping here, they never do. I have no idea how many times I have nearly been rear-ended because I do stop at crosswalks for people. It is the law. Thing is, the cops don't ticket people for not stopping. I wish they would. Skip bike reg and go for the drivers of cars because god knows, a lot need to be done with respects to follow traffic laws here.

An astonishing fact: 1.6% of all Japanese women are compulsive gamblers, according to health ministry statistics for 2009. That’s 750,000 people.

Oh my God! 1.6?! What is this world coming to? 750,000 people? That's just oh sooooo many. Eye roll.

Christ, could they be making more of a non-issue. I'm wondering how many people here have eaten contaminated food. How many parents have left their kid in the car alone? How many have been involved in DV? Much more important issues.

So much for the plant being stable. Not that us foreigners actually bought that like many of the locals.

Can they not call it a day already and get people in who know what they are doing? It seems the day laborers just aren't cutting it. Get in the dreaded foreigners!!

I live in Europe many Japanese friends of mind all marry foreigners especially westerner, the western girls do feel a bit of a threat because one of my UK friends did complaint to me that all the good guys disappeared with the Japanese women,

Interesting because as a western women the line of thinking in my country is that only the loser western guys date Asian women - as unfair as that may seem. Hence Charisma man. They exist back home too. I have also never, ever heard a western women complain about western guys dating someone from another race/country. Western men on the other hand have openly made comments to me and my friends about dating non-whites. Plenty of comments black men "taking" white girls. At the end of the day, who cares who dates who? Just date/marry/love whoever makes you happy.

The newspapers always comment on nationality unless the person is Japanese. Sadly, the newspapers and new "back home" often do this as well - though usually they focus on race.

smithinjapan, what province in Canada would allow the central government to do what the Tokyo government does to Okinawa? I know the people of Canada, it would not happen.

You are trying to compare apples to oranges. Canada didn't lose a war and make agreements with the winning country with included not having a military and allowing bases of the winning country to be built. There are plenty of military bases in areas that I am sure first nations would love to do away with - but they don't have a leg to stand on with it. Much like the Okinawans.

If you do want to look at issues with a province though, take a look at Quebec.

Sadly Smith, so many parents DO leave their kids in the car here unattended...

And indeed, many did call it.

Japan needs to wake up to this issue. Get these crazy moms some help and make the sentences harsher. None of this suspended sentence crap. And while we're at it, make them harsher for parents hitting their kids, arrest those for leaving them in the car alone - I don't care if it is only one minute, it is one minute too long - and do something about postpartum depression.

tmarie, you are not me and you don't get to speak for me. Just because something happens for you does not mean it happens for us. We were not all forged in the same mold you know. I am thinking that all that soundproofing in houses around the air bases is probably there for a reason.

So I don't get to speak for you but yet your "us" comment leads me to believe that YOU think you can speak for others? Perhaps you should reread what you wrote to me and think about whom YOU speak for?

I don't understand what is so complicated about having a vote and knowing who wants what for sure. And if the vote is keep to the base, then what is so complicated about having the government buy the land at a fair price plus compensation? My comment has nothing to do with anything you've just written. Like I said, the bases really aren't the issue. The issue is that Okinawa doesn't like being bossed around by Tokyo but doesn't have a choice. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Okinawa as it is is one of the poorest, is under achieving in test scores for education and has one of the highest unemployment rates. Shame the locals don't put more thought into those problem rather than play tit for tat with the boys from Tokyo.

I would 100% support Okinawa separating and going their own way. Thing is, they are smart enough to know they can't do it and instead, bring this issue up over and over again. Like I said, this isn't the real problem.

Now ask yourself why I am the only one asking about what the 19 year old was doing.

Where have I mentioned anything about charging the guy with murder? Indeed, it is fair to wonder what the 19 year old was doing. I've not heard if we was wearing all black, driving with his light off... However, even if he were, that doesn't excuse the driver of the care from a) driving without a license b) driving without insurance c) drinking recklessly d) driving drunk e) leaving the scene of an accident. All in all, chuck him out of Japan. He was a selfish jerk who drove drunk and I have zero sympathy for anyone who is dumb and selfish enough to play Russian roulette. Sadly, the 19 year old lost his life because of these poor decisions.

I would love to see the reaction of her husband's coworkers if she dare made such comments to them and how their former "comrades" are viewed by an "educated" Japanese women.
