This is going to get interesting. It seems that many "younger" men here are finally getting fed up with the bullying ossans. I hope he fights this, sues for wrongful dismissal and win!

Tokyo, I've also had the same issue - and the same response by the clerks. I have also complained about being given the option of food from the area or none at all. I have no doubts that I am eating contaminated food even though I am trying my hardest not to. I don't trust the labels.

7777, I had a long reply to your post - which basically said I 100% agree with you. It was removed.

Xmas isn't about family here - it is about date night and making sure you find a boyfriend who spend 5 times the price of the gift you bought him.

Tokyo, and Japan in general, are justly praised for their overall safety. Part of the reason for the low crime rate... If we want to ignore crimes of a sexual nature like groping and the like...

I like the idea of kobans and think they are great. I just get tired of being told this is a "safety" country when it is not.

Banned for life from driving should be the sentence.

There is also no way these guys are young and have "saved up" to buy this stuff. Either rich old men or youngish guys with rich daddies. Also willing to bet these the drivers are all male. I hope no insurance company will touch them after this if they are not banned from driving again.

I highly doubt Muslim countries like Saudi are getting in the mad Xmas "spirit" of trashy lights, sugary cakes, mass consumerism, KFC and no idea the history of the season. By all means, create a holiday for whatever you want but trying to call what happens here Xmas is just sad.

Adoption was brought up by several posters. Does anyone know or have firsthand experience about adoption in Japan? I worked in an orphanage school here - kids don't get adopted all that often. Deep rooted belief that you could end up with a nightmare child because you don't know their blood line. There has also been numerous horror movies made about adopted kids killing their adopted families...

JAP - again, I point out to others this is the name you picked and capitalized the letters - as far as I am concerned, the more discussion on mental health issues, the better. If you think doctors and nurses are trained well in this area, I highly disagree. Mental health issues are a huge and growing problem - and often ignored. If doctors and nurses were so informed about this, they would have noticed something. Women here stay for days in the hospital, not a day or two like home. That is plenty of time to assess how a mother is bonding with her baby and her mental state. In her case, she was let down and an innocent baby was killed.

As for judging, I don't think people are "blaming" her. She was obviously sick but a killing of an 11 day old baby is horrific and therefore, comments of "crazy" will be said.

Oki, if they can afford to buy extra things that aren't necessary, why not tax them more? In terms of what shouldn't be taxed, I find it humorous that you excluded alcohol and tobacco - what do you think luxuries means? Add in that both of these cost tax payers a lot when it comes to health care, these should be taxed more - though I am sure you would agree with that.

Leave food (though not crap like snacks, fast food...) alone. Same goes for clothes, books, feminine products, soap, shampoo, medicine...

They do not speak Japanese. They have anyone living in Japan. This is not their host nation. This is their home.

So they are kind of like the Koreans here? Not saying what Canada did is right, but can understand "how" is happened. It would be nice to think that the same thing wouldn't happen in developed nations these days but sadly, I don't believe it wouldn't. This goes on now in other countries so would be rather silly to think it doesn't happen.

Lieberman, not sure what you're trying to say here. The Canadian government doesn't do this now - they have also apologized and gave compensation. What more would you like?

Again, to draw parallels, Japan has apologized and paid compensation for Korean comfort women. It should be the end of it. Taking money and accepting an apology, even if grudgingly is suppose to close the issue. In this case, as far as I am concerned, matter is closed.

Takahiro, do you know how Japan rates "deaths" in Japan for this? It is my understanding that if the person does not die within 24 hours, they don't get included in that rate making that stat a very large lie.

Drove on the Meishin yesterday and saw FIVE accidents alone. Horrific drivers who tailgate. I was nearly taken out yesterday by the car behind me when I had to slam on my brakes due to a random car stopped in the right lane. Went from 95 to a full stop in about five seconds. Not pretty and was left shaking after. Wasn't worried about hitting the car in front of me but was damn worried about getting hit from behind.

They changed it recently to accommodate the free-riding sengyo shufu who 'forgot' to pay their kokumin nenkin contributions when hubby retired/changed jobs and stopped being a sarariman.

Why oh why does this country allow this? If they got rid of this system and made these women (or their husbands) pay their pension/health care like the rest of us who work FT, this country could save millions!

If anything, I feel for the young people who can't find a job. These guys have had time to save, get a penions, get married, have kids... The younger ones are being screwed out of all of this.

Funny, for a country that goes on and on about how well they treat their elders, they really do screw them over with the pension thing.

it still is very backwards and racist.

Compared to where? Certainly it isn't perfect but I can't think of too many other COUNTRIES, not cities, that are more tolerant of all minorities.

Not to mention that the UK also uses that tax for a health care system used by all, not just those who can afford to pay for their health care, free highways where you don't have to pay when you use them... Apples and oranges when you compare what you pay and what you get.

Cut the number of politicians and needless construction, raise luxury tax... so many things they could do instead of raising the tax rate. I don't think this will go through to be honest - Noda knows it will be the end of him.

Jesus, she was a grown woman and not some young mother.

Sadly, adoption isn't seen as 'okay' here - they don't trust anyone who doesn't have the same blood when it comes to kids. Pathetic? Yes.

Add in there is little support for women with PPD. Japan needs to do something about the birth rate and about their lack of support for moms.

Are these guys to be charged? The police can easily tell the speed they were going and whatnot based on the crash damage. 150 in an 80 zone? Take away their right to drive. They are lucky they didn't kill someone!

Happy to see I am not the only one who gets the 'smack down" for stating the obvious! I brought this up over the weekend with some "friends" and was promptly told I was anti-Japanese. Amazing. They are killing themselves and taking others with them but turn a blind eye and tow the line. Pathetic.

Is it possible for this situation to get worse? An honest questions because I honestly can't see how on earth it could get worse.

so he might be charged with this?? Seems pretty silly is the customer ordered it - surely you would have to know the risks of it if it isn't on the menu and you ask for it.

FYI, most of the fugu that is served now doesn't contain any poison. They've managed to breed it out of them for the most part.

So, does this place lose its stars??
