Sorry Ben, I didn't mean HIM, I meant the term "visiting" prof - made that rather unclear!

They have said he was a coach and gave him the title of "visiting prof" so it doesn't sound like he was just coaching. If he was, why the need for "prof" at all? I am willing to bet he had a couple of classes as well.

It also seems that way too many people enjoy jumping to the conclusion that the Japanese university system is somehow at fault, when if there is any fault it is with this suspect and his actions. The uni system IS at fault though. They are hiring people who are not qualified to be doing the job of a "visiting prof" - prof indicates that he's in the classroom.

I guess I get fed up with this crap as I work in the system and see these jokers getting classes and the like - then the munkasho turns around and says standards are falling so they want to increase classes. In makes no sense. Hire those qualified for the job. If he was hired to coach, have him coach but in that case, there is no need for the uni to turn around and make snide comments about his lack of qualifications. It seems like they know he shouldn't have been hired in the first place and are trying to come out of this looking like they've none doing wrong. They put him in the position to be in contact with the students. While he certainly is at fault, so is the school.

@tmarie "the food isn't the best in the world " That's not what you said, you said it's disgusting, repeatedly. There are ways to express your opinions, just like some posters on JT do, no, you are not one of them

Perhaps your English isn't so good. Perhaps you should go waaaay back to my first post of the thread and read it again. I said "some", not all.

I think I have done a fine job expressing my opinion. Shame you can't be mature enough and accept that mine differs from yours.

Ben, well said. The notion that one must think that their country of residence has the best food is ridiculous.

He needs to be fired. No questions asked. Toyota and other car companies fire employees for being caught drunk driving - passenger or not. ANA should be doing to same.

I don't know, with the way the Japanese economy is, the egg of Olympus' face, the number of foreigner investors... I think many of those Japanese investors will back him. The "younger" Japanese (30-45) are also sick and tired of these ossans running the country and bullying people. This could be the beginning of a giant revolt for the younger generation involved in such companies.

Horiemon got the slap down but that was HIS company and he was obviously sketchy and the old guys didn't like it. Very few foreign investors, a short shelf life. In this case, plenty of foreign investors, a long history and good quality. I think this guy has a chance of taking the big guys down. I hope he does. The sempai "I'll do whatever I damn will like" system in running Japan and their economy. The younger guys and investors know this - and probably want them out just as badly. Time for some new blood.

Folks, I just want to let you know that this topic became a big nightly CBS news in US tonight. The food safety issue associated with this meltdown was well focused in the news. The world is watching to make sure TEPCO and Japanese government keep up with transparency as they promised.

Now the question is, does Japan continue to lie and cover it up, like usual, or will tey actually do something - like ban all food from the area?

However, just imagine the chaos that would follow having Edano declare something like a full meltdown few days after the earthquake and with international press already covering the crisis with sensationalized articles. It would have been a disaster. It was and still IS a disaster. The articles weren't sensational. Did you read the above article? This isn't chicken little. The sky is falling and the Japanese government insists it isn't.

**You should give credits to the Japanese people for acting rationally during the first days of the crisis. ** Perhaps if they knew the full extent of the problem, they wouldn't have. However, the government and TEPCO lied to them so they thought all was well. What isn't rational is continuing to raise children in the area, sell the food produced in the areas and spread the contaminated soil all over the place. If that is rational to you, I hate to think of what you see as being irrational.

@tmarie: I think 2020 would be a good date for the Summer Games to be held again in Tokyo, as long as infrastructure construction is done in a well-planned way to benefit Tokyoites for decades beyond.

These games costs cities millions on dollars. Have you looked at the Japanese economy? Tokyo can't afford to run again let alone pay for the games. Where is the infrastructure going to come from? Who's going to pay for it? The majority of Tokyoites don't want the games. Why Ishihara can't get this through his head is beyond me. Tokyo has tons of places for sports. They don't need any more.

Also, I don't think they can promise safe and clean food and water. They can't know and with the truth slowly leaking out...

Though if they bride the committee enough like they did with Nagano... who knows?

Universities these days are money making entities and use any means to attract money(sorry students).

I highly doubt an all female nursing schools is rolling in the cash though so.... why hire him in the first place? Not like they have a great team. Obviously he was friends with someone who hooked him up with the job. They can blame themselves for hiring someone with questionable qualifications.

So, his wife going to file for divorce?

There may be a lot of women with the proper qualifications, etc., but I'm sure that there are even more schools than there are qualified female instructors. They probably hire the best candidate for the job in their opinion. In this case, it sounds like he was not "unqualified" but rather "unfit". Um, most often in "their" opinion a male is more qualified than a female. Don't be fooled by thinking that the female athletes are given the same opportunities as a man - more so when it comes to teaching uni positions. If you look at the uni stats, there are waaaaaaaay more males profs than females. Perhaps men as a whole have more PhDs but I doubt it is anywhere near the rate of the gender imbalance.

Ben, you seem hellbent on defending this "visitor". Do you agree that he was not qualified for the job? Or is an undergrad and two gold medals enough for you? Visiting my butt. They would have kept him there as long as they good using the "visitor" title to get away with it.

Hide, I am not upset at all. I am laughing at how personal some of you have taken it. Saying I don't like something is okay but calling it disgusting is not? Are you the thought police?

Interestingly enough, when it comes to food, I think pretty much most people in Japan would say Osaka is the food captial, not Tokyo. Though I guess Osaka doesn't offer enough pretentiousness so....

Oh wait, what? It is worse than they thought? What a shock!!!!

So, when are we actually going to get the truth? When are they going to stop trying to promote Fukushima food? When are they going to get those families out of there??

** I'm going to read between the lines and guess that you dislike white rice, pickles, and salads (of the type served in restaurants in Japan).**

Well you'd be reading between those lines incorrectly. There are also various reasons as to why some people don't eat certain thing - nothing to do with no liking them. Thanks for all the assumptions. Made me laugh while reading your post.

The quality of ingredients · The skill in their preparation and the combination of flavours · The level of creativity · The value for money · The consistency of culinary standards The quality of ingredients - well after Fukushima they might want to look into that. The skill and combo of flavours? Interesting as I have no idea how many times locals have told me that Japanese food is rather bland - I tend to disagree but anyway... Creativity - that made me laugh. I don't care if the chef can use his ginso knife to make a flower out of a tomato, I don't care what odd ingredients he has found and put together. What I care about is taste and texture. Value for money? Ha! I think Michelin has gotten themselves into trouble for... being snobs and suggesting places every day people can't afford. Enough said. Consistency - fair point

As many, many have pointed out, it is all a matter of opinion. I personally think some Japanese food is disgusting while others wet themselves over it. I have no idea how many times I have been told some is an "acquired" taste here. I don't want to acquire a taste for anything. If it doesn't taste good the first time, I am not putting it in my mouth a second. People can buy into this snobbery all they like - and foot the bill for it. I won't.

Why are some of you getting so upset? Unreal. It is a book. I disagree with Japanese food being the food orgasm people make it out to be. Again, for me, it goes back to snobbery.

**but you're ignoring the criteria that Michelin use to judge the restaurants. **

And what exactly are the criteria?

Listing a bunch of ingredients you don't like - a very large list, I see - doesn't make bolster your arguments, it just makes you look neurotic where food is concerned. I mention a handful of food - a handful that you would be hard pressed to find in any country outside of Japan.

not for people who shudder at white rice, which is what half the world's population actually lives on. Calling something unhealthy - when it very clearly is - is not "shuddering". The drama queens on here is amazing!
