Also, about the female succession issue.... Her certainly won't be addressing THAT issue. Anyone with a clue knows what he's done to get a son!

It’s not my job to analyze and to find out all the truth.

He took advantage of those vulnerable boys who had no other place to go.

    ????

Once again, there appears to be us (Japanese is so safe) and them (Canada and gaikoku is dangerous). Perhaps Matoko would like to look into all the abuse going on in Japan from parents, teachers, family friends... and perhaps comments like You know how life is in a small town. After I started living in Canada by myself, I learned not to trust others easily. would stop?

learning that there were some people who take advantage of vulnerable people when I started living in Canada was shocking and it was a wake-up call for me. I wonder if she thinks we can trust everyone here in Japan as foreigners? I mean, no one ever tries to take advantage of "us", right? No one in Japan tries to take advantage of anyone, right?

Indeed, they need an age to retire. This poor guy gets rolled out all over the place. While they are at it, can they also get a mandatory retirement age for all the old guys in the diet?? Would do this country a world of good.

How does one become a professor here? If you are a Olympic gold medalist, does that mean you are automatically a professor? In the states, one of the things you must do is to be published in your field. Has Uchishiba published something on coaching judo (not autobiographical)?

Depends on your age and field and connections. For the most part if you're Japanese you need a minimum of a masters, publishing and a contact. If you are famous, well, the doors get thrown open and you get welcomes regardless of any studying you have done.

If you are white, male and over the age of 45, you were pretty much hired years ago because you speak English - that being the only qualification you needed then. If you are under the age of 35, you need a min MA, a publishing or two or... you just have a contact who will nil all this and get you in. Pathetic, isn't it?

I doubt this guy has anything but his gold medals. If the school wants to complain he is unfit, they should be looking at the committee that hired him and speak to them about it, not this guy.

Marie, I have to hold my hands up to ignorance about the differences in childcare availability in many areas of Tokyo. Actually, Tokyo is legs ahead of the rest if Japan when it comes to childcare options - and I'm not in Tokyo though I wish I were as I think getting child care would be easier.

While I can understand Nicky's "why can't respect each other" comment, I personally get sick and tired of being told that I need to "support" other women. No, I don't. I think we need to support people, not a gender. They can do what they like but if I have issues with it, I see no reason why I can't comment as if the person were a man and I disagreed with what they were saying/doing... I don't have to 100% agree with what all women do, their opinions, their feelings. This is why women don't agree on this topic. Some think SAHM are lazy while others think working moms are selfish. Whatever. Just offer equal support for whatever choice they want to make and be done with it. Thing is, there isn't equality with it, their is much less support for working moms and well, hence my opinions on the whole thing.

**Where I differ with Cleo and Nicky is that I think the norm should be for mothers and fathers to participate equally in childcare, an tr responsibility to pay for it. ** I don't think either would disagree with you on that to be honest.

They seem to be saying the norm should be for one parent to raise the kids and one to work, and they're fighting for a woman's right to make that choice, and saying men have equal or greater choice than they do. I can't speak for Nicky but if you read the above, this is where Cleo and I clash - and we always do. As I feel the same as you do. More than happy to share the child raising with my husband. Thing is, this country makes it so damn difficult for a) fathers to do their fair share at home and b) mothers to do their fair share of bring in an income. It sucks. I hope it changes. It has to. Women aren't having kids because of it - and various other reasons of course but I haven't popped any out and this is the main reason why. I want to work. I want my husband to be able to help raise any kids we have. The way the system is now? Not likely. It isn't fair for women AND men!

**tmarie, how do you think cheese was 'discovered'? I am sure blue cheese wasnt an intentional development. Then there is the whole idea of salting; cured meats etc. ALL born out of necessity when times were tough and now a regular part of the western diet. And why is kani-miso so disgusting when lambs brains are served in restaraunts in the west?

I am sorry to hear that you are unable to appreciate fine Japanese delicacies. Lucky for you there are lots of western fast food here too :)**

I don't think cheese is getting all these stars, are they? Indeed, cured meat was born out of such things and I don't eat it. Nor is it called a delicacy. Lambs brains is just as disgusting to me but the locals that serve in their countries don';t try and dress it up and called is special and the like.

I am able to appreciate good food thanks, just things like crab brains, natto, uni and the like is not good food. Why do you assume that not liking such things means I like fast food? Nothing linking them together at all. Give me good soba, udon and the like and I am more than happy to slurp it down. Give me something disgusting and I will not eat it regardless of how expensive it is, how much people talk abotu how great it is. Mutton dressed as lamb.

Good side of the Japanese cuisine, they don't like food overdone and boiled, cooked, fried for long time which is very healthy. Might come from their old routine of consuming mostly vegetables that didn't need much cooking Is this a joke? Plenty of Japanese food is fried and is very greasy. Plain white rice is not healthy. Neither is veggies that have been pickled and processed as most tsukemono has. Trying to get plain raw veggies with your meal in this country was nearly impossible 15 years old. Even now the "salads" are cooked, have far too much dressing and are not healthy. Not really anything healthy about Japanese food once you take out the miso soup and grilled fish.

Who said I found all Japanese food disgusting? Some of it is downright disgusting - which is why most other countries don't eat things - natto for example. You might want to look into the history of the "delicacies" here. Most came about because people were starving and they had no other choice but to eat what they could find - again, natto is a fine example, so it uni.

    Johannes, 100% agree with you.

Food snobbery. I don't get it. Your "average" person could walk into any French restaurant and eat what they are given (a few things may make them queasy) while your average person could walk into a Japanese restaurant and wonder what in the hell they are being served as let's be honest, Japan has some pretty disgusting food (crab brains? assorted types of fish eggs, slimy seafood things that no one else seems to eat...). Food snobbery.

Plenty of things they could be discussing - nuclear issues, rebuilding, Okinawa, population decline... and they talk about the soccer team's possible kidnapping if they won? Pathetic.

Well said Nicky! I don't trust the 'stats" as the government is well known to change them to make themselves look good! DV is also "pretty low" but anyone who lives here knows that isn't the case.

Scotch, is many cases in Japan it is NOT an option. Lack of childcare is the main issue. If you don't live near your family and have no one to babysit... If you are deemed to make too much money and can live off your husband's salary (which I fear may be my case as city hall mentioned it), if you don't work "enough" hours a day... you get denied the limited daycare that is out there. With no one to look after your kids, how does a mother get to work? I say mother because in most cases, husbands make more money - and wouldn't have the balls to say they are staying home with their kids. So... with that said, how on earth can I think that combining parenting and work is an option for women in Japan if they don't get a magical slot at daycare?

I would be more than happy for my husband to stay home (he's already been told he WILL take ALL of his paternity leave if we have kids) but since his job is more stable than mine and pays more, common sense says, he continues to work. And he's more than happy to as he enjoys his job and is motivated with goals - probably much more than I am.

If you have an issue with maternity and paternity leave length, take it to the government, not us. I think most of us on the board would be more than happy to have paternity leave extended AND have the men be able to take it without comments. If anyone has an issue with it, it is the men. Many men don't take it because they know it will be talked about at work - not by the women - but by the men. Who are the managers, the bosses... The bullying, snide comments, being taken off the career track... Documented cases out there and why men here are scared to even take a week off, let alone the time they are legally aloud. I mean, they can just look at what happens to the women who take leave and try to come back - NASTY! Some women who take time off and go back to work end up quitting because of the bullying. I know more than a handful. It isn't a sexism thing. It is a problem with the system and society.

**“I could hardly believe it because he was someone that has won twice at the Olympics,” **

Like others, what on earth does this have to do with anything?

It said Uchishiba was “extremely unqualified as a member of the faculty” and had “impaired the school’s honor and diminished its credibility.” Yet they hired him so crying about his lack of qualifications now is pathetic.

Many schools are hiring these Olympic athletes as coaches and "profs". None of them are qualified to be in the classroom but since it brings a name to the school, they look the other way. Then people scream that standards are dropping. Their fault!

Besides, why is a female nursing school hiring him?? Should be at Chuyo or Tsukuba with all the other jocks??

Nicky, that's the thing. If this was "home", I might have them by now. Most of my friends are all working FT moms and love it. Indeed, they are tired and whatnot but SAHMs are tired so... it seems kids = tired mom no matter what they decide to do. Japan makes moms focus pretty much only on the kids which seems rather unfair - as dad still gets to be pretty selfish. Shame the government hasn't figured out that supporting working moms would help the population issue... But what do I know - I'm just a baby making machine...

    Enjoy your night!

At least this does not happen a lot in Japan as it does in other parts of the world, so even bad news can be taken lightly.

This is a joke, right? You new to Japan? There happens a lot in Japan. Which is why so many of us want the child care laws changed.

Scotch, I can agree with your views with men only have one option. I don't think it is fair either but please don't lump us all into the same category. More than happy for the men to stay home - though since they also get a tax break here... Grrrr.....
