You are a guest and a foreigner. Wrong. Some of us are NOT guests here and are here forever. That line of thinking needs to be done away with.
Seriously, if the 19 year old was on a black scooter with no lights on at night and ran a red light right in front of the Brazilian, I believe most of you would STILL blame the Brazilian. I would blame the dumb 19 year but would hope that the drunk Brazilian would be arrested for driving without a license - which means without insurance, reckless driving AND drunk driving. Each one of those account in my country would get you time. Combine and killing someone? Much more than seven years.
Is this racially motivated? Does it matter? Seven years is faaar too light for such an incident. Would the Japanese support something like this if it was a foreigner killed? Perhaps. I like to think they would.

**With the bases in Okinawa emptied of foreign military, think how many tens of thousands of jobs will be created, construction workers, workers in the new hotels, shops and tourist facilities.
Okinawa is losing money by hosting the US military. ** That's a pretty funny joke. You might want to look at what has happened to other places when bases have closed.
**Yes, those communities were built around the base after the war, but where else could the villagers go when their villages were swallowed up into the vast base and disappeared? It was those villagers who worked as pomp-priming factors and created Ginowan City as it is.
A village grows into a town, city and metropolitan. A small colonial community called New Amsterdam became a metropolitan called New York as the population grew. **
Have you checked the population around the bases? Have you asked where people are originally from? Most of the people around the base are not from those five villages and have moved close to the base to either work ON the base of a job/company that is there because of the base population.
I 100% understand that the people from the original area have a right to have their land "back" but if you are going to start with that line of thinking, then how about Japan just leave Okinawa all together? I mean, let's be honest, Okinawa was taken over forcefully by the Japanese, is regarded as the poor uneducated cousin and doesn't mean much. However, the locals won't. Why? Because they know they'll be worse off alone. The US base thing isn't really the issue, is it? It's that the Tokyo government is calling the shots and the locals don't like it. I get it but let's just call a spade a spade. Like I said, having grown up on air force bases and near runaway all my life except for now, it isn't the noise nor the land. It's the politics of it all.

Because there are so many roofs.
Yet, sooo many people looking for extra money willing to do it!

If they're so old and meek and in need of help how about they don't get up on their roof?! Many places have said they'll do the clearing for a fee. Why not do that?!

Just leave it as it is. I grew up on airbases all my life and you don't notice the noise -unless you want to cry about it. Those communities were built AROUND the base, not the other way around. If Okinawa wants to be pissed, be pissed at their government who sold them out, not the US.

There are plenty of men (and women) like my grandfather. Sad though that she thought it was only the Japanese who could be loyal.

Why the hate on the greeks? I know more than a few here. They aren't all poor and out of work. Get a clue.

Indeed Smartacus. how many TV scenes have I seen of old people up on roofs with no security harness? How many old people have I seen shoveling? Unless someone is standing with a flashing baton and telling them it is :abunai" they won't give a second thought to their safety. Darwin and all.

Seven years? That is criminal. Just drinking and driving alone should be more than that. Sorry but deport him. No license, drunk and driving dangerously and then leaving the scene of a crime after he hit someone and killed him? He doesn't deserve to live here. I wonder how the Brazilian community here feels? They have it hard enough as it is, they don't need this guy around making it harder for them.

they only have hearsay "facts" from the press, Ah yes, the press. The press that has had many, many killed who dare to write negative things about him. More writers have died under his "ruling" than those during the communist years. We don't need "hearsay" to know he's nothing but a power hungry thug who will stop at no cost to get what he wants - power.

Ignorance is bliss isn't it Nicky? I have no idea how many times I have heard this from locals. You know what is brave and loyal? People like my grandfather who lied about his age so he could go to war and fight for his country and freedom. People like him who suffered through the war, watched friends and family get killed and then came home and told the horrors of the war and what was really going on and how he hopes no one ever has to go through and see what he saw. But he never regretted going and would have done so again if it was for the country and the people. That is brave and loyal. Forcing young boys to fly to their death and then try and paint them as heros and white washing the history of a nation because they feel they can is not. That is cowardly.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by the misguided comments of her notions of kamakazi and the like. So many locals here think like this it is shocking. I'm shocked that someone who likes highly of themselves and considers themselves to be educated thought loyalty was only a Japanese trait.

Fight on! I hope this crazy power nut dies the way he's lived. Justice is much needed here for the Russian who have suffered far too much in the past 100 years.

The Russians and the Chinese only care about $$$, Syria has nothing to offer the Russians and Chinese, so they could care less how many people get killed there, IMHO.
And you think other countries don't think the same? Please.
Russia and China are selling weapons, looking after their interests and well, of course they don't support the public waning freedom and fairness. Look at what is going on in Russia these days. Look at China all the time. In some ways, I kind of "respect" that they are selling outs and doing one thing and saying another. Regardless, it is disgusting and I hope these people will win and get their freedom. I just hope it doesn't turn out like Libya which is a mess - though forgotten now by the media. Armed to the teeth and hating each other.

Japanese kamikaze pilots were very loyal and died for their country.
You might want to study a bit more about them before you make them to be brave soldiers. In many cases they didn't want to but were forced to and were threatened if they didn't. They were young kids who were told that they would embarrass their family if they didn't do what they were told. That isn't loyalty. That is a government and country brainwashing and blackmailing the young.

Except that they are 19 and 20 as clearly indicated in the article.
And how long has the group been around? You might want to get your facts straight before trying to be the clever one.
