Depends on how strong the emissions are. If it's enough to be harmful, it should ionise. Generally, geiger counters are not very accurate for gamma radiation though since gamma doesn't ionise air. Scintillators are much better for detecting gamma radiation.

It's not exactly surprising in terms of time. The levels will gradually decrease as they get closer to the end due to the methods being employed so it can only get better from what we have now (although people will still moan about build ups too low to harm anyone)

Badsey - the generators are insanely specialised things and are not items just lying around! They are not your run-of-the-mill generators!
The fact is that rumours and half-truths are, and have already been, spread by articles like this... I liked Smorkian's comment of "armchair nuclear experts" comment and nobody is really helped by the kind of thing!
