This kind of 'discipline' seems quite common here in Japan. Just part of the ijime mentality that runs so deep in the culture I guess. Sad !

Ahhh baloney ! yer all full of beans with no clue about what yer prattlin on about. GM has set itself up to dominate the electric car market for years to come. This bailout/bankruptcy hullabaloo is nothing more than a strategic step in that direction. Now just sit back and watch the chinese scramble as GM overtakes even more of their market (they currently hold the lead with 33%) by outdating chinas gas fueled engine industry in a matter of months. This is absolutely brilliant ! And if you haven't bought your stock in GM by now, well what the hey you waiting for ?

'Americans most willing to speak a foreign language? What planet are they on?'
No, what planet are you on ? One that obviously doesn't recognize that the USA is made up of immigrants with over 50 million current American residents being born in another country... yeh, thats right, they probably speak a different language other than English at home. My oh my where do you all come from ?

'U.S. tourists also got top marks for generosity—as the biggest spenders and tippers'
No surprise ! Americans have led the world in charitable donations and charity events for dozens of years.
'but fell short on other counts as the least tidy' -Hey we're on vacation ! Laeve the laundry and tableware for the staff to take care of !
'the worst complainers'
Easy to explain, life in America is first rate. The standard of living is top notch, the quality and quantity of food outstanding, and prices for consumer goods are dirt cheap. One really wonders why Americans would bother to travel outside their own borders. When Americans experience inferior conditions they feel free to tell you so. My advice, instead of whinning about it, listen up and make the necessary changes... after all the customer is god !

OK, I'll jump to the conclusions... she offed McNair who probably told her he wasn't going to leave his wife and kids for her. She then turned the gun on herself ! End of story.

Partly right sharky1 ! Japan, with its P-Poor domestic sales is dragging down the worlds economy to no end. But the real culprit remains high oil prices. I don't know of one factory or business operator that is willing to jump back into the market with oil hovering at $70 a barrel. Everyone knows that as soon as factories fire back up there will be a spike in oil as demand increases. This will once again move oil to the magic bursting point of $100 a barrel.... way too high for anyone to make a profit.

Smart move by GM. Toyota, with all their recalls, has been nothing but a ball and chain the last few years. GM is ready to move on to EV's and I wouldn't blame them for not wanting to share the technology or rewards with a company like Toyota.

'the Financial Times’ verdict on the world’s “most liveable cities.”
'average salaries'
Average monthly salary stateside comes in at $45K a year to Japan's $35k.
'school performance'
School performance ? Well, J unis are hardly magnets for world elite students like say MIT or Stanford, so they must be refering to primary and secondary education. And, the last time I checked Japanese students were still frequenting cram schools at record paces just in order to maintain their education levels. Always begged the question, why can't Japanese young people learn in the same amount of time as the rest of the planet ? Why must they study an extra 2-3 hours a night ?
'health care costs'
Yes, lets not forget healthcare. Japan must be the only country on the planet that demands a couple of hundred bucks a month for health insurance, and then send you away or refuse to admit you to the hospital when an emergency arises. We all know by now about the hundreds, if not thousands, of people denied healthcare in times of emergency.
No for the 'softer issues'
'physical and technological connectivity'
What kind of mumbo jumbo is that ? Is this really measurable ?
'tolerance'
As exemplified by Japans official stance on discrimination (no laws), refugee acceptance (virtually none), or government leadership (Ishihara for examlpe) ?
'strength of local media and culture'
Why are these combined ? The only connection I see is with NHK, Japans overtly government controled television station.
'late-night eating and entertainment options.
Read.... McDonalds !
I hate to sound pretentious but if this is how Japan has garnished a numero uno ranking... well, they can have it. Enjoy !

Pathat, you are spot on with your observations. Last week cbssportslines fantasy baseball editors clearly stated that Matsuzakas participation in the WBC is solely responsible for his arm fatigue. And yes, newswires are now stating that Matsuzaka will miss his next start, a lot of speculation that his season could be over too. What a huge disappointment for RedSox fans and management who have paid millions out for this guy, just to have him turn up lame from a "pre-season" meaningless baseball tournement. If the guy had only kept his national pride in check, he'd probably be looking at another run at the playoffs. Instead, his season is awash and his career is in serious jeapordy... but hey, he can always pull out that WBC trophy and admire his mug.

Simply unbelievable. The same cast of characters that for the past 4-5 years have been bad mouthing Bush and his administration over the Iraq war are now given the opportunity to call out one of their own. The opportunity to discuss the sucess and failures of the British strategy and possibly find out why the British government went along hand in hand buying into the same lies and deceit doled out by Saddam Hussein and his henchmen. A real opportunity to come to this forum and berate the Brits, under two PM's mind you, much like you did President Bush. Instead, what do we get ? Margaret Thatcher ? Surely you jest !

Inkjet, I agree. I personally, nor have any of my ancestors, had anything to do with slavery in America. And neither did a vast number of states in the USA. Slavery was predominantly restricted to northern states throughout the history of the US. What I find more interesting will be how exactly the US will apologize for slavery without dragging European and African nations into the spectacle. It's a common fact that US slaves were supplied by Dutch, Portuguese, British, French, Spanish, etc nationals. Throw in the fact that it was Africans controling the slave trade into Europe and well, this could easily shift to some awkward moments and soul searching by our European friends.
