mmwk2008 - it doesn't matter if you've been cycling overseas for a year or hundreds of years - the rules of the road are different here, and that doesn't necessarily make them worse. I find it very challenging at times to drive in Tokyo (cabs stopping everywhere, cars drifting into lanes, etc) but guess what - it works, and I see very, very few accidents. The Hotel as a Hotel is 119 years old. The building is not. The article isn't exactly clear, but I'd hesitate to call it dead wrong.

There's another article on this story on the Japan Times website which paints a very different picture about their house, wealth, etc. I would strongly urge JT to caveat all Shukan Post translations (and those from similar publications) with a giant "THIS IS VERY EXAGERATED" heading...

Rubbish. I've been there many times and while there are some foreigners, there are hardly tons of them - and most if not all are much more shy than the Japanese (as one could quite easily expect).
