The poll is about summer blockbusters. The list of films are the most anticipated - by many measures - blockbuster films. I'm not saying I'd want to see them all - or even any of them (OK, Star Trek) - but it really seems odd to take the time to post a comment about how much contempt you have for the films, the poll, the system, the blah blah blah.
Seriously guys, get over yourselves.

Saruzenki - Costco's profits are driven by labour, shipping and duty costs, not by store-opening costs or land costs. Anyway, they've opened 9 stores in 10 years. All but 3 of these were opened more than 2 years ago, with 5 of them opening in '04 or earlier. Hardly "so many news stores." And they don't compete with Daiei or Seiyu.
But thanks for trying.

...and BTW, there are plenty of retail consultants out there who will insist that given structural costs and duties, big foreign firms such as Ikea and Costco have yet to turn a profit in Japan. The same can likely be said for Wal-Mart. And certainly can be said for Carrefour, who exited the market.
As for the domestic firms, we certainly don't glean much from this article. So Onward Kashiyama booked a 38BY loss for FY08. OK. But without knowing their balance sheet size, turnover amounts, etc, there is nothing to put this against in terms of perspective. I know next to nothing about this firm but 8 seconds on their webpage shows two key things that would have been nice to know: Consolidated Net Income was up 6.8% FY08; and O.K.'s FY ends at the end of Feb, so these results are really for the period prior to the recession really hitting Japan (e.g. March '07 to Feb '08), so really don't speak much to Terrie's point anyway.

If anyone thinks US retail is a good customer service experience they need to have their head examined.
As for the article... (sigh)... Terrie, lines do not equal revenues and revenues do not equal net income. You've produced a very talky article with zero facts and figures on how the stores are actually performing on a bottom line basis. You write
What rewards? You mention none. Big lines? Do you really think this is the point of opening a new store? Yikes...
