Not with a bang, but with a whimper.
Sad end to what should have been a model of investment and ingenuity for the country.

Wow, what a thoroughly depressing read. And with some such a wonderfully unintentional flair of irony - popular clubs for unpopular people?!

The tip of the iceberg. It's amazing how much demand for plasma TVs and that cool new laptop falls when you're homeless.

Does this really need to be in English? In my experience the only tone-deaf spatially unaware belligerent subway rides are the locals.

Hey JT, how about some "life in Japan" articles from some people that, um, live in Japan?
And for the writer... Tokyo has a pretty active bar scene. Enjoy it (and ditch the laptop dating.)

File this under "Tip of the Iceberg"
These guys are nuts. How do you change the culture of an entire organization like the NPA? Not easy... but I hope it happens before these guys really wig out.

It was in a bad, off-pitch location and never really seemed terribly inviting. I would be shocked (shocked!) if rental increases were the reasons for closing the store - this whole sub-market is in a downturn now, and if they were able to survive the rent increases in '07 and '08 there is no way they would have to fold now.
Score another victory for J-Pop...

I certainly won't be writing some long treatise on employee protections here, but needless to say I think Terrie has missed one of the most crucial points for any employee to understand in the event of a reorganizational filing:
Is the form of reorg filing civil rehabilitation (minji saisei), corporate rehabilitation (kaisha kosei), or liquidation (hasan)?
Depending on what form the reorganization takes, employees will be protected to different extents. For instance, in a straight liquidation employees should have little or no comfort about being paid the full amounts owed to them.
As an aside, the concept that a company would have "sufficient assets" to pay employees during a reorg is a bit counter-intuitive. Typically, insolvency in Japan is a simple matter of liabilities being bigger than assets (with much less focus on an ability to service debts as they come due, which is much more common in the west.) I think what Terrie means is so long as the company has sufficient cash flow to cover super-priority claims (taxes and employees) then employees should feel relatively comfortable that they will be made whole, even if they ultimately lose their jobs.

I agree completely with Kwatt. I have thought a lot about it, and I suspect there may have been some possibly minor issue or disagreement amongst the siblings. Maybe. Perhaps.

Since when is Tokyo insolvent?
The issue isn't the solvency of Tokyo - it's fine.
The issue is I have yet to meet anyone in the city who actually supports the games. Most people I have talked to see it is a waste of money when there are other far more important social projects to be focused on.

As horrific as the police here are, I can't possible imagine that they are worse than the sensationlistic and yet amazingly naiive domestic media.
I have no idea why JT would chose to post this article, which likely has zero basis in fact and only serves to sensationalize a very tragic story.

Do we really need to argue whether a 3 month contract is the same as a permanent contract?
And isn't this all kinda missing the point that some freaking psycho ran around a crowded area with a knife?
