And thus starts the end of the Noda government.... after 8 days! Wait for the LDP and others to start calling for Noda's resignation next, to take responsibility for appointing him.

I wrote before that most of Japan seemed to have forgotten that Kan exercised great leadership in making this decision, telling the Utility known as TEPCO not to abandon the Fukushima NPP, seen if it meant taking some casualties. There was no time for consensus building in the back rooms of Asakusa clubs or Ginza hotels, and the chance of losing 1,000 or so workers to radiation sickeness to save 30,000,000 or more residents is a small price to pay, unless of course you are one of the 1,000 .... though the consensus amongst nuclear workers worldwide is that they would stay at their post to the end.
Couldn't see any other politician in any of the major political parties making such a quick and critical decision.
Masao Yoshida, the plant manager, was also vilified for defying the inept TPECO management, continuing to flood the reactors to cool them down, a decision which was later credited with preventing a worse situation developing.
Two good guys, in the right place at the right time...

@foxie - Hayama Marina in Kanagawa charges about 2,000,000/ year for a waterside berth for a 35 foot boat, and around double for the deposit!

Out of the picture were Tokyo Fire and Rescue Squad, a doctor, paramedic, and ladder... in this nicely posed picture.
But looks like mum has aged a lot, looks more like grandma, though the clothes are rather unflattering for a Royal Family member.

Best thing they could do is to establish a secure nuclear waste disposal site/ dump for all of the Japanese nuclear power plants in the grounds of Fukushima NPP, the land is poisoned for at least the next 300 years ( 10 x half life of Cs), so at least other towns and villages would be spared the threat of stored fuel rods melting down and dispersing radionucleides.
Hosono is two eggs short of dozen, the goal is to minimise the spread of radiation, not to disperse it.

@john becker - nuclear power is not cheap when you include the real costs of spent fuel processing and storage, decommissioning of reactors, and management of low/ mid and high level waste. NPP utilities also do not have to pay liability insurance for their operations, as they are covered by governments, unlike most other factories and power utilities.

The utilities under-reported their non-nuclear capacity and exaggerated the demand, in order to get their nuclear steam kettles back on line as soon as possible, along with all the grants and income that they generate. That plan sure backfired...

@the_sheriff So I wonder how many months it'll be before the fickle Japanese public becomes dissatisfied with Noda.
Kyodo and Mainichi will be gearing up to run their polls, showing some initial minor rise in public opinion, then steady drops over the next few months.... happens as regular as clockwork.
Whether they are real polls or not, i.e. reflecting actual opinion or just the MSM opinion, they seem to accelerate the process of getting a new PM in...

The nuclear reactor inspectors and regulators should be the ones apologizing for their years of falsifying safety data and complicity with TEPCO's shoddy design and construction. Stories of cooling pipes rupturing instantly and fixtures snapping and breaking from the earthquake shock alone are coming out now from on-site workers, meaning that blaming the tsunami for the triple meltdown is no longer true. The design and construction was so poor that they had to use heavy machinery to bend pipes into position before they could weld them, meaning they were under stress from the start!

One of the few honorable politicians left in the Diet, he kept his word and left as promised. It's a shame that he was let down by ministry bureaucrats, local government, his own party and TEPCO. Sure he could have done better, but so could virtually everyone else involved.
The country owe him a debt of gratitude for storming round to the TEPCO office, and telling them to stay on site and fix the problem, even if they had to die. Had they abandoned the place, it would have been a lot worse. Everyone seems to have forgotten that decisive action by him.
Enjoy your break, but come back soon!

Some/ all of the Kei-cars and mini-vans should be banned from the expressways, it is just too dangerous for them. Small wheelbase; tall, narrow body, underpowered, they are blown all over the place in winds or bad weather, they are accidents waiting to happen.
Nothing worse than to see an overladen mini-van in the fast lane at 90 km/ hr, weaving from side to side as the engine strains to maintain the speed and straight line, while cars behind overtake on their blind, inside...
