Amano was here just a couple of weeks after the disaster, but was hampered by the main role of the IAEA in preventing nuclear weapon proliferation; they also had to wait for Japan to request help, he could not force it on them. They have a 35 country member committee, that spends most of its time getting the 150 or so member countries to agree on small print issues, let alone an instant decision to provide help.

Maybe the IAEA will change to become more pro-active, which is what many people wanted, but they are still deep in the pockets of the "nuclear club", and are limited to what they can do...

Bit of much-needed PR for Mrs. John Lennon...

All she has done recently is close the John Lennon museum in Saitama, outside of Tokyo. Over 10 years, a total of about only 610,000 visitors came to see 130 items from Lennon's life, including his favorite guitar, a pair of his wire-rimmed glasses and hand-written lyrics.

About 2 billion gallons of superglue to bind the two fault lines together is probably just as effective. You have to remember that the utility sponsored-professor who approved the geology, shortened the lengths of the fault lines, against the advice of independent geologists. Only he got his research funding approved...

I thought one of the major issues for the whales was an inability or difficulty to dive due to the inherent buoyancy of these plastic objects? Immediately more dangerous compared to the long-term effects of toxins.

And the 215 seiverts/ hour in the lower containment areas? Where the corium has melted and lies on the concrete containment? Just pouring water over it and generating gallons of highly contaminated water? Do they have any real plan to deal with it? The nuclear industry constantly denied that their worst nightmare of a fuel meltdown to outside of the Reactor Pressure Vessel could ever happen with their defense in depth. No carbon-based workers can enter that area, nor can any of the silicon-based 'bots. It'll be interesting to see how they plan to deal with this, if at all...

Prompt Action - less than a week since the issue became known, exposed or admitted to...

but as @exportexpert writes, watch out for re-labeling - the food and meat industry are experts at this!

Most of these dates are CYA by companies to avoid litigation in case of any problems. But with so many cases of mislabeling and re-labeling by Japanese food companies, who knows how long the food has really been in that container. Eyes, nose and common sense are highly recommended!

The new steel withstands even large earthquakes.

How large? And do they provide a written, life-long, money-back guarantee?

For more than 30 years, they've never had to pay for the full medical care of the nuclear gypsies - the homeless, down-and-out and disenfranchised labour - recruited by the gangs to do the dirty repair, cleaning and maintenance work at these reactors. They account for more than 85% of the recorded radiation absorbed by nuclear workers in Japan, well at least the doses that they bothered recording and are not falsified. Their cancers, bone diseases and general radiation-induced lethargy have contributed to the utilities bonuses.

Welcome to cheap and safety Japan...

Sad reflection of modern life that they have to hire a PR company to tell them how to say sorry; must give you an idea how sincere these 'apologies' really are; desperate corporate spin-doctoring to prop up his shareholder value and personal fortune...

Hope that they have a good population of down-and-out homeless and unemployed people for the dirty and dangerous jobs of repairing and maintaining the reactors. Hitachi-GE probably forgot to tell them how their reactors are repaired and maintained by the sub-sub-sub-sub contractors...

@Net Ninja - just for your reference - more than 70% of the B787 is outsourced - the wings and wing boxes for the 787 are made in Japan, by Fuji Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi and Kawasaki, rudder and leading edges in China, flaps in Australia, wing tips and tail cone in South Korea, mid fuselage in Italy, cargo doors in Sweden, landing gear in the UK, fairings in Canada - not exactly made in the USA!
