They also shredded all the invoices and receipts very soon after the Nagano games, so that people would never know the real cost or find the paper trail for bribes, gifts, donations, grants and other financial incentives to get the games.

It's too dependent on the 'network' and communication systems, you have to rely on them for everything. Lose your data link, you lose the ability to work, communicate, access data, and who knows who is snooping on your data?

Great business for the likes of Cisco and hardware vendors, promoted heavily by media who get advertising revenue from those same companies. And for little companies and businesses who have problems, do you really think these massive cloud companies will respond quickly to your cry for help?

Let's hope it's not the same inspectors who ignored test data, falsified test data, failed to inspect various cracks in welded joints, pipes, reactor shrouds, leaks, and generally colluded with the utilities to allow reactors to carry on. They were responsible for many of the deaths in the Maihama reactor accident, using data from another 'similar' reactor to extrapolate that Maihama was "safe".

And as for overseas regulatory agencies, they practice what is called pencil sharpening in the US nuclear industry, shifting the goalposts whenever there is a problem, or claiming the original specs were too stringent, and this will do.

Read the article again, she has not been fined 50,000 Yen, that is the maximum possible fine for violators. She has just been charged....

Then again saw a driver this morning pull over to answer a cell phone, but who managed to block both the narrow main road, and the junction 'entrance' into which she 'parked'.

But agree that J-pol should be consistent, and go after car drivers and especially truckers who violate the rules of the road.

**** Holdings B.V. Some sort of Dutch Limited Liability Company created for tax purposes? Looks like someone has been doing their homework to minimise tax payments.

Wonder if they'll bring in some much needed English/ Chinese language support to users here?

They got one thing right, he was a disaster at communicating! Sound more like a cheap oyabun in the available soundbites.

However, he was substantially correct that locals should come up with their own ideas. How can Kasumigaseki and Nagatacho really know what Iwate needs? He himself admitted that he was from Kyushu and knew little of the Tohoku region. It seems that moves to decentralise government from Tokyo have a long long way to go, and part of the responsibility must be on local government refusal/ reluctance to take on the responsibility for their region. The feudal mentality lives on...

Tide barrier - maybe; tsunami barrier - no way. Having seen the force that the tsunami delivers on to walls and other man-made barriers, they need to be a lot more solid than that.

Aya Sugimoto is still around to more than adequately fill any gap that Mona Yamamoto will leave in the mature woman stakes. Both of them are women, as opposed to the usual girls who inhabit the celebrity world.

Not many of the modern trains have windows that you can open to allow a cooling breeze inside the coach as you travel along. They were built with a/c in mind from unlimited availability of electrical power, and have those massive single panes of glass. Just like modern high-rise office buildings, though they also have security and stopping suicides in mind. Maybe JR should start running some of the pre-1980 rolling stock again...

On other occasions, he would lean out of the driver’s side window and raise the barrier by hand.

How on earth could he have done that? He must have really long arms! It's a mechanical arm.

He could still be PM at the New Year if he continues to do things like this. He is giving an element of stability to Japanese politics, and putting together a reasonable (by Japanese standards) government. Just don't fix a date to resign...

It would help if utilities detailed exactly what safety upgrades they had installed and what changes in procedures they had made; then allowed independent verification (not by nuclear inspectors) by both qualified outside experts and some unbribeable general public members; not politicians or local bureaucrats or utility staff, eliminating those with vested interests and previous histories of corruption and negligence.

Common sense and direct observation instead of reliance on utility promises might go a long way to check if these NPPs are indeed safer, or if is just BS.

Nothing special about this, we've done the same with our ground floor windows at home. Just hang some regular green netting at an angle outside the windows, and then allow the plants/ vines to grow up them, they may need a bit of manipulation to make a good thick curtain. It's cooling, stops a lot of the direct sunlight, is pleasant to look at, and prevents people seeing inside your rooms.

@osakadaz - thanks for the update - also read that now they'll have to check what actually caused the malfunction, whether any bits were broken off and left in the liquid sodium, a rather opaque and dangerous liquid, and then maybe retrieve any pieces that have fallen off.

Except for the politicians, researchers and employees vested interest, it sounds like a project that should just be discontinued.

@osakadaz - Monju has not been fixed yet. That is an article from 2010. They've tried twice pull out the bent rod replacement tool, and now PLAN to do it by removing the sleeve, then replacing it. This work has to be done in an argon gas atmosphere, due to the nature of the liquid sodium coolant, igniting on contact with air or water. However, it is not a hush-hush operation at all - there are lots of reports and explanations of the problem, and even a powerpoint presentation showing the stages of the operation.

Monju - 1 hours worth of electricity generated in nearly 20 years of non-operation.

I wonder if Kimiko is now rueing her years away from the tennis circuit, having risen to no 4 in the world rankings, then leaving it at the top for marriage to try raise a family that she never had? Her husband should also take some credit encouraging her to come back to the sport, and maintain the high level.

The Honda Asimo is a prime example of a useless Japanese robot. It will dance and talk on stage to entertain corporate bankers and shallow mass media, naive school kids and foreign dignitaries, who are easily impressed with its quasi human-like features, but they are totally oblivious to the team of technicians backstage supporting it's use, the specially prepared floor so that it can manage to walk, and the amount of preparation required for it's 10 minute performance. That's all it is, a performance.

@maria - at least they did not call it "porridge". "Doing porridge" is British slang for serving a prison sentence, porridge once being the traditional breakfast in UK prisons.
