'Is planning to....' Not exactly a quick response from them, one month to 'consider' what to do?. Those Muslim guys giving out curry and rice within a few days were a great example of a prompt response. ( I wonder what ever happened to them?)

And as for opening for business when evacuation centres run out of food, they are already out of food. Don't listen to the official bureaucrat line, just call anyone up there. The rice ball/ day or piece of bread/ day are not always available.

@cricky I might add that in all OECD countries, except here a 75 yo does not have to rely on working.

The incompetence and poor record keeping of the Japan Pension Scheme left millions of of people without pensions; Shigeaki Konno is probably just one of thousands there left fending for himself...

Next year she can play the executive of a power company, whose cost-cutting measures contributed to a tragedy when a typhoon struck the power plant... bit more realistic!

The quicker solution sounds like big profit for Toshiba, and big trouble for the contract workers (haken rodosya) who will have to perform most of the hard labour; absorbing radiation until a superviser with a hopefully working dosimeter and stopwatch decides that they have taken enough. Experiences from these itinerant workers at Fukushima and other Japanese reactor complexes suggest that they have little choice in the jobs, the dirty underside of an industry that revels in secrecy, and cares as little for their disposable work force as they do for their disposable protective garments.

    “Forward together as one, Japan”

Reminds me of the classic book, "Eats, shoots and leaves"....

No spelling or grammar checkers on any ANA or PR agency computer?

These "suits", rubber gloves and boots will NOT PROTECT them from anything except than alpha type radiation. Beta, gamma, X-rays and neutrons will pass through those paper, nylon or cotton suits straight into the body. It is one of the biggest myths being propagated that these "suits" are for PROTECTION. They just prevent the wearer from becoming CONTAMINATED; any radioactive material on the suit will just penetrate the body, as long as it is in close proximity. If the wearer does become contaminated, they should discard the suit/ undergo DECONTAMINATION process and leave the area. They will still have absorbed a dose of radiation, which can be calculated later.

At a quick glance, I thought it said,"Grannies drop more than 30 categories...."

    then I re-read it....

Another shameless occasion of of self-agrandisement and mutual admiration, yet another awards ceremony.

Early on, the company ran out of full radiation suits, forcing workers to create improvised versions of items such as nylon booties they were supposed to pull over their shoes.

A legacy of good ol' nice guy, Mr. Masataka 'Cost-cutter' Shimizu, the absent CEO. And no-one thought to ask any of the other nuclear utilities in Japan for some, or ordered any urgently?

Wonder if the makers have any idea of the decompression time from a dive to 200 metres? Is it automatic or battery operated? Does the extra fluorescence (tritium?) mean greater radiation? Do tell us more...

I was one of the team working on a small part of this video in Tokyo in 2009, and met both Larry and Tracy, and a young Japanese autistic. Using a live translation system, their ability to communicate complex ideas with each other was amazing, their thought processes seemed much quicker than non-autistics! Their vocabulary, breadth of knowledge and command of language was very impressive. One touching moment was when they took questions from an audience, including being asked about their own perception of autism, how they dealt with people, and about how they felt non-autistics people should deal with them. Working with them for a whole day certainly changed some of my pre-conceived ideas, and left me with a lot of respect and admiration for them.

this slightly embarrassing gadget is probably best relegated to the inner recesses of a ladies’ handbag.

And where should the men's model go? Men are not immune to bad breath either!

Masataka Shimuzu followed his father into TEPCO at the age of 23, he is definitely NOT an amakudari appointment. However, there are a number of other executives who did join TEPCO after a career in either the Japan Nuclear Regulatory Agency or other bodies. One was a former Deputy Director, and the appointment was so obvious, even TEPCO apologised!

Do you really think he is the decision maker just because he is on TV a lot?

Japanese robots such as Asimo need a large programming team behind them each time they make a media appearance, and most of their actions and comments are highly scripted. They are also incapable of moving across anything but a totally smooth floor. Despite people saying they look like 'cute terminators' or other sci-fi robotics, they are very limited in function and capability. In short, they are useless!

Yukiya Amano is a political appointment, ex-diplomat, and knows nothing about nuclear power, so all he can do is recommend other people talk and talk, and not even meet before late June, such is his sense of non-urgency!

The two whistleblowers who exposed the falsification of data, short cuts in manufacturing, and ignoring of safety warnings should be re-hired as consultants. All high level management, executives, Japanese government officials of the time, academics and regulatory staff who were involved in these dealings should be retired, their names are known. Independent oversight should be established, and not just the usual old amakudari academics or retired regulatory staff, but current experts from manufacturing, power and nuclear fields. The cost-cutting CEO should be given the job of supervising the clean-up crews on site, not 'encouraging the troops at head office' like his flunky PR staff explained. TEPCO itself will need major re-organisation, with the focus on safety, not cost. That's for starters!

They went down much earlier than the 16th, virtually straight after the quake, along with many other banks ATM systems. Other banks recovery was much quicker. Bloomberg wrote on the 18th of Mizuho ATM and other system failures already lasting three days, long before quake donations were established.

Shame on them using this to cover up their failure.

They nearly didn't make it! The planes were running out of fuel on the way and had to declare an emergency to land at Cyprus. But good to see at least one country supporting them in a practical way.
