Those high voltage cables are massive, think in terms of a couple of kilograms per metre, so a 50 metre length alone weighs a considerable amount. Then consider the bolts required to fix and secure it. Now try and fly it from a 70 metre electricity pylon wearing these suits and gloves. There are some other very dramatic pictures on a UK website showing them doing this, and also the conditions in the control rooms, as they work in there. Once attached, the integrity of the whole power system must be checked, especially after the flooding and spraying with sea-water. Damaged boards and equipment must be replaced and tested.

Next, the pumps are about the size of a compact car, and if the system is not bled properly of air, when they start up, the air bubble can blast a hole in the piping, so workers have to manually bleed the radioactive water of air bubbles, without absorbing too much radiation again.

This is not like wiring up a house, this is very high-voltage, high current industrial work. A mistake could kill people, and set the repairs back to the beginning.

Thanks for trying. Must hard to see so many bodies and so few survivors...

There are dozens of radiation detectors in use in Japan; Kanagawa prefecture alone has 8 in the Yokosuka area around Global Nuclear Fuel, a nuclear fuel rod maker, and another 5 around the Toshiba factory in Kawasaki that makes components for nuclear reactors.

If this food was already on sale, it must have been in the distribution chain long before the disaster, hence not a problem. More scaremongering.

It wasn't until Friday 18th, that MHLW took action to restore the medical supply chain, and then on Saturday 19th, Japan Medical Association requested pharmaceutical and other makers to provide supplies - 8 days late! This is in contrast to one of the handicapped peoples' associations or unions, who had list of addresses of all of their members, and started to locate them and take care of them straightaway. There is a lot that can be learned from this disaster, both for Japan and other countries, let's hope that people do.

One of the first whistleblowers, Tatsuya Tanaka, personally involved in the fabrication and falsification of manufacturing and safety data contacted his publisher a few days ago, and they will reprint his 1990 book called “Why Nuclear Power Is Dangerous” that detailed his experiences. However, whether the oyajis who still rule these companies and ministries will really do anything substantial to improve safety and risk is something else."

Expect to see sales of superbright LED lighting grow exponentially now. I changed all my office lighting over to them three weeks ago, and all 6 rooms were lit well, with the same total power consumed as one old 60W light bulb. Of course now, the lights are mostly off to conserve even more power, but that is an example of what can be done.

TEPCO did not act alone. Check the whistleblowers accounts of the falsification of data and re-numbering of reator parts, sub-standard construction and cost-cutting compromises with the manufacturers of these reactors, as well as METI and other regulatory bodies ignoring concerns, for fear it would stop the development of nuclear power in Japan, and affect big profits for the industry. The responsibility can be spread across much of Japanese industry, the former governments, and some totally reprehensive individuals who performed, authorised or approved these actions.

Really poor timing for this sensationalist article. The headline gives the impression that old people are robbing each other now in the disaster.

Nuke-a-noia, zero protection against radiation. Fear-mongering here is getting to be a media speciality.

National Government - pretty good considering three major problems. Local government - variable, but typified by inflexible thinking up north, there is no manual for what they have to do now. Japan Railways - thought I'd see containers of supplies being shipped from Osaka and Nagoya up all those other working lines to the north, they have diesel engines, then handover to locals. ASDF, MSDF, GSDF - variable, a boatload of 10 to rescue one person, where are all their bulldozers, helicopters, ships, and heavy equipment? J-Police - again, 6 local policemen to manage a set of traffic lights on a local road!

Naoto Kan is doing a good job, considering he's got the big picture to look after, Cabinet Secretary Edano is managing the nuclear issue as well as he can, considering the power utilities lack of information.

Now if only the local bureaucrats would think out of the box, how to help people up north. Refusing to deliver goods to an evacuation zone, instead telling them to come and pick it up themselves is not helpful to people.

My sister was due to come over in April, but I've told her to stay at home, it's hard enough for locals to keep working, and someone who is not used to crowds could really be stressed. Of course now the travel agency refuse to give her a refund, circumstances not exceptional enough!

The inland railways are intact, why not send food and medical supplies in containers from the Nagoya and Osaka regions by diesel trains? Then divide them up amongst the regions needing it.

Don't the Arabs have any planes or military of their own? For years they have been great purchasers of US, UK and French equipment, offsetting their balance of payments.

Economy class, where most people sit: 312 on the lower deck, along with 12 first class "beds", with 88 on the upper deck, along with 60 business class. 18.5" wide and a seat pitch of 32". (Data from seatplans.com)

Unless you are small, or pay a premium, you face a squeeze in economy class, but at least in Changi, you can get off the plane quickly.

Might make a few people wake up as to Japan's treatment of immigrants and special permanent residents, vis a vis the Zainichi Koreans, but then again, probably not.
