Looks like the corporate copy-editors had a field day with this piece of unashamed, meaningless propaganda for a car...

Too bad that unless you are off-road on a track or circuit, you are limited to the legal maximum 100 kph speed limit, or you break it...

    Fog...rain...trucks...motorway...

A lethal combination, and having driven in the UK last year, and seen the trucks ignoring road conditions, speeding, tailgating and changing lanes suddenly, it comes as no surprise. A bit like Japan in that respect.

Respect to the emergency services who have to clean the mess up, can't be a great job.

Roger Moore's bad performances were also the result of a falling out between Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli, with TMWTGG being the nadir. He wasn't an action hero, just a pretty boy with a deft chop. Sean Connery was the original, and the standard by which all are judged, but Daniel Craig surpasses him in many respects. Let's hope he gets a decent script this time...

The musician's musician in Japan. Have been involved with his party band 'Fuse' on a number of occasions; he's a genuinely nice guy, great performer, supportive and synergistic with his other band members. Look forward to him continuing his work for a long time...

One wonders if the Imperial Household Agency read the dismissive comments on the JT page, and upgraded her illness from a cold to pneumonia?

Whilst hoping that she does recover soon, I can't help agreeing that the constant isolation of the "IHA bubble" contributes to the general weakness of all the family members. Then again, Japanese children in general are rarely outside playing; it's all juku, TV, Gameboys and PS3 until it's time to go to bed.

Oh dear, another F-15 problem on Tuesday. In the latest incident, an aluminum buffer part 7 centimeters in diameter, 0.2 millimeters thick and weighing 6.4 grams, fell while the F-15 fighter based at the ASDF's Nyutabaru base in Shintomi in Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, was on a training flight mainly over the sea, according to the base.

Not the size of a drop tank though...

Finally some realistic figures being quoted.

Though they have yet to develop any technology that can go inside the reactor basements and view the melted down fuel, to see the actual situation. Carbon-based workers would last just seconds in the "dry well" areas which were putting out more than 500 Sv/ hr at the beginning of October, that's 500,000 milliSieverts/ hour.

They'll still be on Thai salaries, and probably having money deducted for rooms, and other expenses. Japanese companies are very good at exploiting foreign workers here.

Pity they can't employ Japanese at these factories in Japan though, is there really so much work that they need to bring people over here, and no Japan residents available at all?

Or is it some kind of quasi-PR move, to atone for Japan's single-minded focus on their flooded factories, and not the plight of the Thai people?

pawatan - good point - Japan has a lot of cross shareholdings which no-one wants to upset; the US and others have a lot of directors sitting on the boards of each others companies, paying each those huge salaries which again no-one wants to upset, whilst firing workers to maintain shareholder value and their own salaries.

At the end of the day, it's their workers who get short shrift too...

Posted in: The lack of outside independent directors is simply a symptom of the underlying issue that companies are run by a tight group of people who have been in the company for decades.

Looks like neither Japan’s Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission or the Olympus's own investigation will reveal much, or have much incentive to reveal much, so it is up to the FBI. They seem to have a much better grip on the case...

Takayama also claims nothing wrong was done, he was another one of the directors who voted Woodford out.

The New York Times article pf 24th October suggest that the usual anti-social elements were involved, with a couple of rather dubious Japanese brothers who also ran consulting firms, advising on another 700 million dollars of investments into areas of little interest to Olympus's core business, and which 75% were written off within a year of the deal. It seems that most of these brothers investments lost money, a rather good way of passing on sums of money to 3rd or 4th parties.

It looks as is if the FBI probe might be the most revealing...

Corporate governance in Japan lags a long way behind North America and Europe, and most of Asia. Many of the global companies are actually still run as personal or family businesses, like in the case of DaiO papers, where executives still think of the company as their personal property. Too many cross-shareholders exist, with no-one wanting to upset the status quo, The general disdain for the typical small non-cross holding shareholders opinions is seen every year at the AGMs.

It will be interesting to see if they have a clean sweep of the board, as the new guy is also denying anything wrong happened, and see what happens to Woodford.

Posted in: Do you think that the problem unfolding at Olympus is a difference in perception of how business is done in Japan? For example, could deals that ousted British CEO Michael Woodford considered dubious, be thought of as normal business practices by Japanese executives?
