If he answers to the people, then the people of Saga need to get up in arms about this and if they dont, they only have themselves to blame.

Kyushu Electric and the governor, have channeled a lot of money to the local people in a dead backwater of Japan, providing jobs, facilities, donations (open and under the table), etc.,, while bureaucrats and local government just gave rubber-stamp approval to all of their activities. They just did not explain fully the risks of Nuclear Power Plants.

The same thing happened in virtually all the areas where NPPs are proliferating.

Now the radioactive genie is out of the bottle, but people are reluctant to stuff it back in, and turn down NPPs, as they will lose all of those benefits. Currently there is little work in those regions, twilight industries not suited to a modern lifestyle, an ageing population, coupled with strong unions who tell their member how to vote, or risk being ostracized, almost a death sentence in those parts.

Despite all the evidence of collusion, corruption, poor safety standards, pollution, and the potential for a disaster; the locals will probably still vote for whoever gives them jobs, and puts food on the table, and a roof over their heads.

    • It said that the group which contracted the companies is Tokyo Rinkai Recycle Corp, which owns a 95.5% stake in TEPCO.*

Shouldn't this be TEPCO has a 95.5% stake in Tokyo Rinkai Recycle Corp? No-one has a 95.5% stake in TEPCO.

Moderator: Yes, that has been corrected.

Their hearts are still in the right place, despite being suffocated by the Imperial Household Agency. They opened up the Nasushiobara summer house to evacuees, a very quick response to the disaster, much quicker than government.

Apology, couple of months loss of salary; at the worst resignation, and turning up as head of one of the subsidiaries in a couple of months.

Bet the shredders and file deletion software are working overtime at their HQ now...

All that tartan makes her look like a female Bay City Roller, one of the UK teenybopper bands of the 70s, but she does scrub up nicely in a dress.

Looks more like a mother/ daughter portrait though...

Will Kyushu Electric reveal the amount of "donations" that they have paid to the Saga governor and others to maintain and develop nuclear power in Kyushu?

Expect the usual round of "sorrimasens" (Japanese-English verb meaning not sorry), a vague promise not to do it again, and some warm air from the Sumo Association Elders.

    Business as usual in J-Sumo.

Seems like a specialised form of "skinship (katakana - sukkinshippu)".

With all the proscriptions in modern life, it may be the only form of personal contact that these people have in their life.

There are already a couple of automatic gates at Narita for departing passengers. Over four or five occasions when I've been leaving Japan, I've only ever seen them used once, and they had two officials walking the Japanese guy through, as he did not understand the system.

I personally don't use it, I don't trust it. I don't want to be the subject of harassment and interrogation when I return to Japan, because the machine did not work properly. I'm happy to wait in the queue for a manual check and stamp, and know that it has been done properly.

Same as the automated boarding pass system, they are all require ground staff to guide the passenger through the system as they all have different interfaces. I would make a guess that these interfaces are designed by programmers and engineers who have never taken a flight in their life.

Nothing about the governor Yasushi Furukawa who instigated it either, a recipient of many donations; obviously desperate to keep his snout in the nuclear trough...

    He should be out too...

More electronic gadgets leads to dumbing down of the steering wheel attendants, aka drivers, as they get to rely more and more on them. At some point there will be a situation that needs human input.

The white line detector in item 2 would be useless on many of the smaller, country roads in Japan, where although there is a line in the middle of the road, you have to drive in the middle of the road to avoid erosion, obstacles, sings, lamp posts, electricity poles, etc..

So much of this trial is poor science - such as the so-called benzodiazepine effect. They ignore the half-life of the actual drug given, lorazepam; not all members of that class are effective for the same duration of time nor have the same time of onset of action, they do not even have a record of when the lorazepam was administered!

These sound like some of the most miserable bars in the world. Coupled with the arrogance of the self-styled sommeliers in wine bars and restaurants, and the snobbery of waiters in their penguin suits in hotel bars, and you wonder why anyone would go to these places...

“Instructors must be well aware of the risk of brain injuries and be prepared for emergency treatment.”

They should NOT inflict brain injuries in the first place. Especially with a 6-year old boy.

Training should be appropriate to the skills, size and level of the student.

Are they next going to recommend trepanning (neurosurgical procedure) courses to reduce brain swelling?

Beddington is still tied to the "nuclear village" as the official government scientist. The UK govt and nuclear industry made a concerted effort to play down Fukushima, as many emails have shown; they did not want anything to impact on their own investment and plans, though the UK is different in that it does have a significant working reprocessing capacity and a nuclear weapons programme that requires plutonium. However, its own MOX programme (and 840 billion yen investment) has just been abandoned, maybe a lesson their for Monju afficionados in knowing when to stop pouring money into a bottomless pit, or reactor pool?

6 months later...when most of the radioactive material has already seeped into the ecosystem and around the country. Decon should be done straight away.

Thank you very much IAEA...for nothing.
