Of course they are incompetent ! Murderers remain at large, the general public has stopped asking for their assistance, and thousands of dead bodies go uninvestigated every year for fear of appearing to be "incompetent"... what a catch 22 that is !
I prefer the no nonsense throw the bum to the ground tactics employed by other nations. Crime is much higher and deadlier in Japan than the data indicates, I'll take my chances with the officers in blue back home !

Ho-hum, imagine this, more America bashing ! Fact is this headline should read:
"(Insert political city of choice) culture of deception"
Tokyo would fit ! London ? You bet ! Toronto ? Absolutely ! Paris ? I think so ! Seoul ? Definitely ! Moscow ? Gotta laugh... fer sure ! Cmon JT, you can do better than these ill conceved liberal commentaries ! I mean does this really have any affect on the lives of J civilians or any of us living in Japan ? I think not... ho-hum !

kwaabish... yes you are grasping ! Attempts to cherry pick around the planet in some lame misguided attempt to save Toyota from more public embarrassment ! If you want a break down of charitable donations by Ford, GM, Coca Cola, McDonalds etc. do so at the proper forum. Fact is Toyota has done damn little in terms of philanthropy here in Japan... the topic at hand ! Planting a mere 50,000 trees on here and there is a joke ! Gee, wonder whats gonna become of the excess limbs and falling needles or leaves ? Yep... they are gonna decompose, or be burnt, thus generating even more co2 carbons than before ! Fact... plants and greenery are the number one cause of greenhouse gasses ! Well done Toyota ! You wanna help the environment ? Try sending your staff home at decent hours and closing down your factories at night... that should lower the use of aircons, heaters, lights, electricity etc ! Damn loser company ! Voluntary overtime indeed ! All their doin' is pollutin the air with all that free labor ! Time to shut Toyota down !

No deal "K" ! Yer grasping at straws here. Fact is J companies are pathetic in terms of philanthropy... Toyota is no diff. In fact its safe to say they wouldn't donate a damn thing if it weren't for pressure from other major co's, namely in the US ! Check yer history books, you'll see J co's in the states were nothing but jonny-come-latelys in terms of forking out the donations. But, since Toyotas image is currently under attack, they had to throw the masses a bone... and you bit ! Hardy har !

"this article fails to report that, since 1991, Toyota has donated more than $340 million dollars to philanthropic programs"
And in Japan ? 50,000 shrubs ! E-m-b-a-r-r-a-s-s-i-n-g !!!

GM you say ?
Fact:
In 2004, GM and the GM Foundation contributed over $68 million to charitable causes through cash contributions, in-kind donations and participation in charity events.
Toyota ? The worlds number #1 car company ? 50,000 shrubs ! I repeat... how embarrassing !

Wow ! This is waaaaaayyyy wrong ! I've actually worked with the immigration police officers and dog units ! This is not "standard procedure" by any means ! The police here are covering this up for exactly the reasons boycottolys has mentioned...
"this is clear grounds to open up any case where the person was caught at Narita & subsequently convicted"

I was in the new Costco in Iruma this weekend ! American beef was just flying off the shelves ! I asked one of the foreign managers working the floor about sales of US beef. He said, anywhere ranging from "very good" to "excellent" ! The Iruma store in particular was doing well, seems the locals haven't been able to get such wonderful beef at such low prices for ages ! Guess ya can't argue with those numbers !

memyself, I gotta concur ! The last time I saw Sean Kamu (sp) he was portraying an instructor in charge of teaching the "Africans" Japanese. All this while the three pulled leaves off the studio decor and chewed on them, belched, picked their noses, and talked about how badly they needed to take a dump ! Shameful behaviour by the writers and actors, and I haven't seen Mr. Kamu since !

What do I think ? I think theyre a buncha of kiss-ups and sell outs ! I've never seen one tell it the way it really is ! They all fear for losing their jobs if they did, speaks volumes for freedom of speech doesn't it. I say bring back the old yellin' screechin' shout out yer nostrils "Sore wa hen dayo" program that got yanked a few years back. That was classic ! Staged yes, but still classic !

"Asked why the new models do not feature the company’s hybrid system, Watanabe answered: “We believe we need a hybrid-system for minivans in the future. But we didn’t adopt the system for these new models in relation to other models.”
This product is doomed ! Minivans are no better or worse than SUV's in terms of fuel costs. Major blunder by the folks at Toyota, what were they thinking !

notjeff and zenbuilder,
Please folks, if your going to base your argument on "food safety" and try to state that Japan's food safety record is better than anyone elses, or that consumers are not buying American beef due to safety issues... I'd like to be the first to welcome you to Japan, cause you all obviously just got off the boat !
Having said that, notjeff... please stop taking isolated incidents of criminal behaviour and try to twist them into the norm. It is flat out illegal to process downer cows for human consumption in the US.
Again people, take the millions of tons of American beef consumed each yer and measure it against the numbers of illnesses... US beef is hundreds of times safer than that cigarette you put in your mouth, the alcohol you consume, or the Toyotas you drive ! Those are facts !!!

Notjeff...
"japanese consumption of US beef has dropped 90%"
Uh, yeh a complete government ban and organized program of slander and libel will do that to a product.
"If you believe that government should serve to protect the people"
Huh ? Whatchu talkin' about willis ? The Japanese Government has "never" been in the business of protecting the people... just their own pocketbooks ! Learn the difference pleaase... yer embarrassing yerself !
"then japan is simply being bullied into importing an unsafe product."
Huh ? What exactly is unsafe ? Please show me how beef at 20 months of age can be unsafe ! exactly how many people in Japan have been sickened by American beef in the last 50 years ? Put those figures into the amount imported and lets see where we sit. I'm willing to bet the farm that American beef has an "exceptional" record when it comes to food safety in Japan. Can chinease gyoza say the same ? Japanese dairy products ? Japanese mislabeled meat products ? All them farms hiding their 0-157 data ???
"This is not a "choice" issue."
yer right ! Because given the freedom of choice... as all the available data clearly states... the Japanese consumers will choose American beef time and time again !
I for one will join the other millions and millions of folks around the world and will gladly continue to enjoy healthy safe American beef ! The Japanese government needs to face the facts... the consumers want US beef and the government should stop interfering in free markets. Explains how Japans international ranking in terms of competitiveness continues to shrink... too much market protection ! I say... butt out !

"the sheep disease from which BSE is supposed to have developed, can be transmitted in utero. No reason to believe that the same thing could never happen in cattle."
Hmm, no reason to believe an elephant can't dangle from a daisy off a cliff either... except for the fact it's never been proven ! Give yer theories in psuedoscience a rest Cleo, we're talking real science here not theories !
