Just another example of how drastically Japan differs from more advanced nations like America. Once again consumers are forced to "buy what's available" rather than what they want ! Make no mistake... this is only the beginning. And the Americans, with it's 160% food sufficiency rating, is about to hold Japan's feet to the fire ! Sorry Nippon... you lose ! Let the butter wars begin !

    tako10:

"In the political system of Japan, the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important, groups: the right wing extremists who engages in construction business (typically demolition company as their legal business), and the farmers in the courtsides who has vey strong lobbying power."

So which group does Japantoday belong to, as they are front and center in this drive to discredit American beef. Even this article, taken from a rather lowly rag The Shukan Post, is just another example of how active Japantoday remains. Especially when the facts clearly indicate that the average consumer will purchase American beef in a heartbeat. Fact is, the stuff sells out within days of delivery... so why all the negativity from Japantoday ? What's their angle ?

    For sarcasm123:

"The piece of meat in question does not contaion any bse contaminents."

Ahum... since it is not tested sufficiently, you don't know that.

Yes I do. The beef in question was under 20 months of age. Therefore it cannot possibly or scientifically contain BSE prions. That is science mate... not guesswork !

"Beef coming into Japan from the USA is the absolute most safest meat available."

"That must be why the majority of developed countries don't import it."

Wrong again... countries don't import perfectly good food products for a variety of reasons, the biggest being "market protection". That is basic Economics 101 ! Not biased opinion !

"Millions of Americans eat American beef everyday"

    "And look at them!"

Yep, just look at all those Olympic gold medals and just look at all them movie stars, entertainers, and thousands of centenerians living well over 100 years of age... yep, just look at em !

"And even if you did eat bse tainted beef... recent studies indicate there is "no" guarantee you will contract any disease related to its consumption"

"And even if you have unsafe sex there is "no" guarantee you will get a nasty disease."

Is that what recent studies have told you ? I don't think so. But then again it's your world sarcasm123... we're all just livin in it.

    Hmm,

"This hero girl must have amazing parents who instilled proper survival values into their children."

Sorry, I somehow doubt it. I'm more inclined to think that the girl was scared out of her wits and simply jumped in without thinking ! I did the same thing when I was 9 ! Ran through fire to get my dog... didn't feel a thing ! God bless this little girl !

Is Japantoday part of this countries organized program to slander and libel American products to death ? It appears so... I mean what is this ???

"Hence, dangerous beef can slip under the radar.”

What is this buncha malarkey ? Truly some shoddy journalism here ! Posting such unscientific krap is surely the sign of a second rate news organization... no matter how you may try to distance yourself from it by putting it in quotation marks. The fact is J-Today actually posted this !

    So for the record...

-The piece of meat in question does not contaion any bse contaminents.

-Beef coming into Japan from the USA is the absolute most safest meat available. Only the USA is providing beef at less than 20 months of age. There has never been a single case of bse found in cattle of this age.

-Millions of Americans eat American beef everyday... have so for hundreds of years. And not one American has contracted any bse related disease to date. Millions of pounds of this stuff mind you... for hundreds of years !!!

-And even if you did eat bse tainted beef... recent studies indicate there is "no" guarantee you will contract any disease related to its consumption !

So please... J media outlets like Jtoday... stop the misinformation. I mean imagine if the US media went on such a misguided campaign of bold faced lies and half-truths. Imagine if the US media openly reported that you are more likely to die in a Toyota or Honda than you are of bse ! It is a fact mind you... but is this what "international relations" is all about ? Isn't it time for the j media to grow up ?

I've got so much pent up rage over this story I don't know where to begin ! So how about a full fledged volley at the social ills that have gripped Japan, the nation !

First, why was this women not taken to a hospital ? Probably because they were all full ??? Or maybe she lost faith in the whole system and just tried to DIY ? Or maybe she induced the labor to abort the pregnancy ? Whatever the case, why wasn't there anyone around to adequately supervise and counsel this woman ?

Where's the husband/father ? At 33 you'd think this women and her partner would be more responsible... but then again !

The absolute cold and callouse way this creature tried to rid herself of this child calls for nothing short of severe punishment... jail time, like for murder ! Good god woman... a miscarraige is not illegal, and Japan has opened baby chutes for unwanteds... what the hell were you thinking ? Obviously nothing !

    rjdjr,

"Too much crime news! Let's hear something positive about Japanese society once in a while."

No ! Lets not ! Because this is the reality of todays Japan ! Todays headlines in particular pretty much says it all...

"Women arrested fo beating sister to death with a rock"

"Women gets 15 years for killing husband"

"Woman arrested for trying to flush infant child down toilet"

This is the real world here in Japan and not some erratum. Nary a Monday goes by without the headlines screaming about another whacked weekend where the relatives and so called love ones have a go at each other ! This has truly become frightening stuff and nobody can deny the levels of escalation. Japan is without a doubt a society in decline. A nation with so many social and economic ills that we don't even know where to begin. I for one can't wait to get out ! Damn scary place if you ask me !

Redacted, well said ! If only the rest of the planet could be as efficient and offer customers what they want at a fair price as well as McDonalds does ! You can say all you want about the golden arches, but the fact remains, they are succesful and they offer the customers "exactly" what they want ! If that wasn't the case, they wouldn't be in business ! Ol' James Wilkins knew exactly where to go to get the BBQ sauce he wanted, make no mistake. I'm willing to bet he uses McD's BBQ sauce in some special recipe at his own French restaurant.

"I believe there are university sociologists at this very moment researching a thesis to prove that people who consume corn dogs, big macs and other varieties of western junk food are more likely to commit violent crimes than those who eat rice balls produced with umeboshi and other home-grown ingredients."

Interesting bit of research when you stop and realize that McDonalds is the number one most sucessful restaurant in Japan ! Doh !!!

What is this ? More of the amatuer hour !!! Good lord, could this photo be any more messed up ? You got people looking in a variety of directions, the mice have their ears locked so we can't see the person in the back row, 7 of the 9 dwarfs look miserable, and who's the nitwit behind Ariel and Prince "whoever" ? Was she not told to open her damn eyes ???

Oh, and is it me, or is there something just short of a "police state" mentality in Japan. I mean just step outside your home and take a look at all the police, guardsmen, cameras, security doors, gates, fences, barriers, false mirrors, viewing holes in the ceilings, and signs warning that "someone" is watching you ! I used to get a good chuckle about the recorded message at my local Sundaymart that asked the customers to please not shoplift from the store !

    Netrek, Statistician, etal...

Just a few months ago a book came out here in Japan highlighting this very topic, how Japanese police skew numbers and data to make their precincts appear safer than they really are. In the US, this simply does not happen. In fact, I would say the opposite happens... that relatively peaceful and quiet communities have nothing to gain from state legislators by being such. No siree, crime is big business and it puts millions of people to work each year. In short, it is better to have the appearance of crime than the appearance of relative calm. Obviously explains why so many millions of people continue to flock to what is consistently advertised as the most dangerous place on earth. If that were really true... wouldn't Americas population figures drop ?

Oh and Kenbrady... lost yer computer, and got it back ? Trust me there are millions of honest citizens in the USA also. We just read about one such construction worker, with a mountain of debt, returning hundreds of thousands of dollars he found. I too have seen people drop 10's and 20's from their pockets while walking, only to have some honest American return it ! Honsety is an individual thing, hardly molded by national character !

Actually, "thats" not true. The chances of being burglered are very high, the chances of it being reported to the police though ??? I've had my residence entered on 3 different ocassions in two different towns. Twice I was home, chased em off, called the cops... who did nothing ! The third time, I did the leg work, hunted the geezer down in the woods near my place and dragged him down to the police station ! I can honestly say I've never had this problem in the States, nor has any member of my family or friends ! Go easy with your stats there stat ! You are dealing with cultural differences as to how different nations go about "reporting" crime. Americans will report the theft of a $5 garden hose where Japanese won't say a word about a$300 bicycle !

"These two really need to stop this foolishness and start concentrating on..."

Sorry rjdjr, what you see is what yer gonna get... "foolishness" !

And "war for oil" ? Is a necessary evil if you ask me. Just imagine how the world would react to disruptions in say 1/3rd of the worlds oil supplies. No doubt... world warIII ! All that unemployment ! All the angst over the world economy ! Now I imagine if push came to shove, the Americans would just increase their alternative fuel strategies, grow more corn for fuel, and say the hell with all them countries living off American grain. Lest we forget, America is 140% food efficient. And 60% of what American farmers grow goes overseas ! So there ya go... your new war, but this time for food ! See how delicate the cycle is ? It's one of the reasons Saddam had to go !

Blood for oil ? You damn right ! The history of our planet indicates wars are fought over two things... economics and religion ! Now rjdjr, are you personally ready to give up all your plastics and consumer goods to save some blood ? Me ? Sure as hell could, as Hank JR once sang... 'cause a country boy can survive" ! Now I gotta run... the trout are bittin' on the lower "D" ! You, in the meantime, enjoy your store bought vittles and continue to bang away on yer plastic little computer box, does the word hypocrite riong a bell ?

This womans body has never been found ! Yet an eye witness claims to have seen the guy digging a grave... so where's the body ? Finding blood, a damaged truck, and someone seeing watanabe get into his truck seems to fall in line with his excuse for what happened ! How in the world did they find this guy guilty of murder, and not involuntary manslaughter ? Somethings amiss !

I ate in one just the other day in Shinjuku. The reason ? I wanted to eat at Sukiya, but they closed the upstairs seating area and forced customers to line up 4-5 deep !!! After a bit of a shout out to the manager about taking customers for granted, I walked across the street and took my business to Yoshinoya. They gladly seated, fed, and took my money ! I'll not be back to Sukiya in Shinjuku anytime soon... poor service !
