    "The point being?"

Japanese in Tokyo outnumber foreigners a gazzillion to one. What is it about this one gaijin (?) that made him beat all those other nihonjin looky loos to the front of the "I'm here to help" line ??? I'd like to know who he is. I think I saw a military style hat in another photo, maybe navy. Reminds me of the story about the young korean that jumped on the train tracks to save a fallen drunk japanese man a few years back. Thank god for the foreign community ! Someone ship this photo to Ishihara would ya !

Having worked with the Municipal Police Department, I can assure all of you... searches are not "random" in Japan. You would be shocked at all the racist b.s. talk that goes on within the corps ! Remnants of the ol' clan mentality, incouraged by the Tokyo Gov. Ishihara too.

"So Nagoya, we'll all sit down at home and watch gang rapes, pornographic videos, violence, girls with no clothes."

"Sit down at home" ? Nonsense ! You can see all that and more by just heading in toooo, you guessed it... Akihabara !

"I agree with the posters who said it was good that the cop didn't open fire. As many people as there were in the area"

No there weren't ! Video and still photos clearly show it was only the police officer and Kato who had his back to a wall, nothing behind but building. Realizing the spree was over, Kato simply dropped the knife, no the officer did not disarm him, and kneeled down as the officer held him. Other news reports then say that two other officers then showed up, "late". I'm not sure why the media reports are writing this, but they seem to be badgering the police for their slow response. After all, Kato had 5-7 minutes with which to walk around slashing and bludgeoning his victims. The choice of a knife made it more effective as news reports indicate that nobody knew what was happening till the third or fourth victim actually screamed out they had been stabbed ! Now I have been to this location and have walked the area. 17 people in 5 minutes could only happen if nobody knew what was happening. In most cases, Kato silently walked up from behind and thrust his dagger into the backsides, slicing the liver open. Wow, what a killing machine this guy with a knife was ! With a koban just around the corner and the Akihabara police out in full force, why did it take so long for help to arrive ? That seems to be the direction the media here are headed. I for one would like to see these daggers and survival knives banned in this country ! Too easy to conceal, too silent when being used to slash and maim. Enough already, this is not the first incident here in Japan but rather an ongoing stream of mayhem that seems to be on the rise. Kowaii !

Speaking of pictures, anyone else out there catch the phot's from todays yomiuri ? Front page has what appears to be a brown haired gaijin applying pressure to one of the victims. Anyone know who he is ? Also, check out the 'Bachan standing in the middle of the street all google eyed ! Blank exressionless face... speaks volumes ! Then there are all the people taking photos of the three victims as they die in the streets ! Question ! What exactly are you going to do with those photos ? I mean how sick is that ! Some of these people have telephoto lenses ! WTF for ? Is this something you really feel the need to photograph ? To show who ? When ? "Hey grams come on over here, I got some great photos of them people that got knifed in Akihabara !" "Yeh, just look at all that blood !" "Hey anyone for some ocha and sembei ?" Sick folks ! Really sick !!!

Yahoo has a detailed discussion about how todays Japanese self absorption and selfishness is leading to all these killings... I couldn't agree more !

Yo, check out the guy in the back bustin out the cell phone to "capture the moment" ! I dunno, maybe he's on to something. I mean how often does one get the opportunity to actually see blood stained streets where 7 innocent people where slaughtered by some crazed loony.

    And lest we forget...

"Police discourage autopsies that might reveal a higher homicide rate in their jurisdiction, and pressure doctors to attribute unnatural deaths to health reasons, usually heart failure, the group alleges. Odds are, it says, that people are getting away with murder in Japan, a country that officially claims one of the lowest per capita homicide rates in the world.

“You can commit a perfect murder in Japan because the body is not likely to be examined,” says Hiromasa Saikawa, a former member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police security and intelligence division. He says senior police officers are “obsessed with statistics because that’s how you get promotions,” and strive to reduce the number of criminal cases as much as possible to keep their almost perfect solution rate."

    Buffoons, the whole bunch !

"So tell me, how many innocent people have the Japanese cops shot by mistake in the past, say, ten years?"

Not sure about innocent but I know of one cop in Koku that stalked a young lady for weeks before firing on her... does that count ?

Better yet Cleo, how many criminals remain free today because the J cops don't have the guts to haul them in. I can think of thousands of Yakuzas, bozuzokus, prostitutes, robbers, rapers, and all manner of thugs that just laugh at your brave police force ! Starviking brought up the video a while back of the J cops running from a pipe weilding nutjob ! And Ichihashi actually eluded the nations finest in barefeet... while being surrounded at every corner ! Give it up Cleo, J cops are pathetic. The results speak for themselves as J citizens no longer even contact them for help. As for size ? Not my words... those were the words of your fine officers in uniform... and gee Cleo, I thought they were talking about the size of the courage and moral integrity of the person in the uniform... not the size of the uni !

Nice try Cleo... you have singlehandidly flooded this thread with every attempt to put a positive spin on a wayward duck ! Fact is, this poster remains unconvinced. I too have had extensive experience working with Japan's police force. Varios domestic training sessions, international conferences, Riot control, Embassy postings, the "KOAN"... etc ! In every single case I have left the training thinking, what a complete group of idiots and boobs ! Not a leader in the mix ! More interested in getting drunk and surfing the net for porn than going the extra mile to become a true professional. You would be surprised Cleo at the looks on the Japanese faces when they are first introduced to real men and women of the other nations police forces. They stand there slack jawed mumbling "dekaii" and "sugoii" ! After a few hours of intense drilling on crowd control and room searches... well the Japanese look like a bunch of whipped pups, they wanna go home and rethink their lives. But you can rest be assured, a day or two later and it's back to beers and porn ! Buncha losers ! I am truly embarrassed to admit I work with the lot !

Ummm, isn't it the screamin orange Chuo line that has all the suicides ?

Tragic event ? With more than 100 suicides a day in Japan I would hardly label this "tragic"... seems like more of the same ol same ol in the land of the disgruntled in Japan.

"Japan has long battled a high suicide rate relative to other developed nations"

Speaks volumes doesn't it ! Begs the question... why ? The answer lies in the "tragic" lifestyle the Japanese have created. All work- no play, failing businesses and an economy in the dumps, a social network obsessed with oneself rather than the benefits for others, sexless marriages-inhouse divorce-spousal abuse-alcoholism-metabolic syndrome- and an overuse of cell phones that research indicates is bad for the brain ! Gee, maybe thats the solution... get the Nihonjin off their cell phones and away from all those magnets screwing with their mind ! But the biggest obstacle facing Japan is it's inability to first admit it has a problem ! Suicides are last ditch efforts to escape a life of misery and saddness. The fact that Japan ranks so high is truly... "tragic" !

Kwaabish ! What a great link you have provided ! Talk about narcissism at its best ... good god what a joke. Lemme see, under the heading of "Social Contributions" Toyota includes the following:

-1933 Kiichiro Toyoda establishes the Automobile Department within Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd.

    -1935 The Toyoda Precepts established

-1937 Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. established

-1950 Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd. established

Gimme a break ! Are these really "charitable contributions" ??? Bwahaha ! And it gets worse... Toyota goes on to brag about, among other things...

    -Community concerts (1981)

    -Orchestra Camp (1985)

-The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology (1994)

What a farce ! "K" is this your idea of a philanthropy ? Or like I said, just lame advertising to promote their products. In any case, thanks for the link, I didn't realize how poor Toyota's philanthropy record in Japan really was till looking at that mess. Again, bwahaha ! "Orchestra Camp !!!

Like Duhhhh ! Of course Aussie beef exports to Japan are down... Because ???

"Frozen beef exports grew as Japanese companies stepped up purchases of affordable beef products, Miho Kondo, MLA’s market analyst, said."

And who is selling "affordable beef products" ? Yep the Americans ! Odd that this story fails to mention that. Fact, American beef continues to increase it's market share at the expense of Australian beef ! This, despite the ongoing media campaign against the product ! Moo !

"Japan is THE least security-conscious country I've ever seen."

Really ? Seems to me with the high population density, it's virtually impossible to get away with any kind of crime that you have mentioned. Throw in the cameras on every street, the kobans on every corner, the security guys patrolling the shopping centers and office complexes... the place is a virtual concentration camp ! Why bother with a light timer ? Hell the street lights illuminating the front of my apt is bad enough !

I can't imagine a more heavily "fortified" Nippon ! There are already security guards manning every business entry, police on every corner, combination locks on every enclosed apartment structure, the skys are full of self defense heli's, and cameras photograph my every move between stations and city wide department stores ! How one single incident of crime could go "unnoticed" is an absolute miracle. Japan is nothing more than a police state... yet look at all the rising crime there is here. Makes you wonder what the incompetent J police do all day... maybe I should take a gander at the other thread discussing the topic, but then again, why bother... I don't need some misguided Brit to tell me how it is in Japan. This article speaks volumes. Knife resistant shirts... indeed !

nigelboy, once again you are way off topic with your US stats. First, try to come to grips with two things... Americans report crimes, all and any that are perceived to be. Japanese ? No ! They have all but given up on the incompetents that run the show here. So much so that in one international study showed that 60% of Japanese would not report their car stolen ! Throw in the latest claims that Japanese precincts refuse to investigate unnatural deaths to preserve their low murder stats... and there ya go ! A society full of nothing more than smoke and mirrors ! But like PT barnum said... there's a sucker born every minute, guess who that might be !
