I'm not scrubbed up on the Japanese driving license rules, but surely there must be a system in place where by seniors must take their test again after reaching a certain age to qualify that they can drive safely. My UK license for example is valid until I'm 70yrs old.
Having said that though, the divering old fools will no doubt plough into you on their bicycle whilst you walk down the road!!

tkoind2/tmarie - It basically boils down to the fact that you should treat one as you expect to be treated. Granted, If Ms. busybody obachan knocks you for six on her way to the pew, then she doesn't deserve to be treated with respect. However, as I'm sure most on here will already know; be it driving down the road, sitting on the train or queueing at the local greengrocers, the arrogance of most citizens is that they will not let you go ahead of them if the lights are on red, you only have 1 item at the checkout or you are elderly with a stick wanting to sit down. Thus, the whole country is at war to get that seat, be first at the checkout and so on. Arrogance breeds arrogance and so you will find when the door of the train opens, some obachan will smash her way past in search of the seat as both you and I know nobody will have the kindness in their heart to offer it them!!!

As the yanks tried to change the game to meet their commercial driven appetite back in '94, they wanted to play four quarters instead of two halves, I would rather it didn't go to the US. England with the best league in the world and the quality of stadiums already on offer should get it but won't what with Monsieur Platini in charge of UEFA. For heavens sake Manyoo dropped out of the FA Cup back in '99 to enter the World Club Championships in South America as a bargaining tool to their fellow football associations, only to be given the cold shoulder. No matter what England's FA does, the European elitists don't like them and would rather vote for another European state to host it instead.

I guess the case for this nonsense can be summed up pretty easily in the quote below.
The fact that he's made so many blunders of late suggest one of two things. A) He couldn't possibly be a type A as it contradicts what the book. or, B) Aso needs to fire his doctor and have another blood test!!

I have a problem with what people associate with bullying in Japan. In what is seen as playing a practical joke on one student, for example hiding their beloved shoes, is tainted under this phrase the media like to call 'bullying' or 'ijime' as it is known here. Hardly bullying really, more likely the kids are weak and have no bottle. I'd say a high percentage of the kids in this country wouldn't last two days in a western style upbringing where it is common place to find yourself involved in daily fracas with the 'so called' bullies. As for the kids father in this story, if he is going to work his socks of to provide for his son, I would expect him to pull his weight too. Obviously not in todays society, where some youths expect everything to be handed to them on a silver spoon!!

Good lord. With all the money and time thrown at ESL in this country, it's amazing that a minority of students have to advertise the fact, with some puny badge, that they CAN speak Engrish. Though I think the badge should read: I rabu Engrish, purisu supiku surori!!

I remember finding a flight to Manchester last year for JPY47,000. When I enquired further I found that after taxes, of which Heathrow charges a staggering JPY21,000, the ticket price was closer to JPY160,000. You are fooling no-one BA. I would love to go home for a visit but will not be paying a premium to do so!!

Having taught my 3 year old son to check for vehicles when crossing a road, no matter how minor or major they may be, I find it amazing that other mothers/familys come out with the 'erai desu ne' remark. The fact that even such a basic rule of the road is not taught to those amongst his peer group just baffles me. Not wanting to be stereotypical at all, but it seems some parents seem to leave the raising of their children to the system. We then read on a regular basis about these kind of instances in the media. A sad waste of a life.
