A little update - there are two surveillance cameras on the road going up that mountain, one at the top and one at the bottom. The one at the top didn't capture any footage of anyone, and the one at the bottom had its wires cut. I doubt this was random.

I have been up to that onsen many times with family and friends, and although it is one of my favourite places to go, I would never recommend that anyone goes up there by themselves, male or female. On one occasion I was up there with my friend and all of our children, and as we were leaving there was a group of 2 or 3 young men just hanging around. We had a bad feeling about it, and it is definitely these kind of guys that I can imagine doing such a thing. For people who live in Beppu, these mountain onsens are a favourite place to go, and it is devastating that something like this should happen to a young woman in such an amazing place. We should stop blaming women for their independence and start blaming the perpetrators for infringing on that independence. My heart goes out to her family.
