And with that statement, you are totally wrong. As a nation, the state of health care in the U.S. is abysmally poor. No nation spends more out of pocket while achieving mediocre results and leaving many millions uncovered and subject to personal bankruptcy. This state of affairs is horrible and acceptable only to the lunatic fringe that now appears to be more of the heart of the Republican Party.

I recall it was you who said the financial crisis was largely caused by banks being forced by legislation/regulation to lend to people who could not afford the loans. (And I showed you the obvious facts which proved of the gross falseness of that claim.)
Being so provably wrong on key issues does not seem to prevent you from spouting more nonsense and false reports. It is well understood how lies and innuendoes fuel the Republican constituency against health care (and every other policy that might benefit the vast majority of the American people).
If we review why the American people threw the Republicans out in 2006 and 2008 so resoundingly, we have only to go back to the campaign of 2000, when the Republican candidate promised the American people that his proposed tax cuts would not create deficits -- since he was going to see to it that he kept discretionary federal spending at or below the level of his predecessor. And then, after election, he and the Republican Congress went on the biggest discretionary spending binge since LBJ's Great Society programs.
The American people should be reminded of this major Republican lie. Alongside the fact that their "Contract with America" called for term limits, a balanced budget amendment, and a line-item veto -- none of which were ever introduced as serious legislation when the Republicans had full control of the Congress and the White House.
The American people would have to be grossly stupid to return that pack to the seat of power and authority. It is sad to see just how many of them are in that sad condition.

Thanks to the Democrats, the Senate has just passed what The New Republic calls "the greatest social achievement of our time."
The bills critics like to gloss over the fact that the current U.S. health care system is "uniquely horrible -- twice as costly as the OECD average while producing mediocre results and denying care to millions."
The bill is far from perfect, but even in its current form is a vast improvement. Thank you Senate leadership and President Obama.

For how the health care plan will benefit the vast majority of Americans, consider the following chart:

Only those spite-filled folks who can't take their party being pushed out of office -- through their own malfeasance, incompetence and culture of corruption -- refuse to admit to the benefits.

tigermoth writes:
Everyone can agree that the world will never achieve perfection. But the state of those providing for those who cannot can be better described as "moral" rather than utopian. Throwing up the failure to achieve utopia as a reason to act morally is an ideal example of the perfect becoming the enemy of the good. And it's a favorite tactic used by those who wish to defend the abysmal and unjust status quo.
We start by addressing and not avoiding the truth. The truth is that the United States depends on the labor of people who have entered the country illegally. If employers were not giving them jobs, they would not be here. It is simple as that. Regarding health care, any person who contracts a communicable disease -- whether legal or legal resident -- should be treated. The risks and consequences of not doing so are frightful.
Regarding quality of health care, that is a separate issue. Until someone comes up with the metrics by which to measure health care quality, we will never get a handle on the issue.

LOL! Looks like someone does not understand the time value of money (TVM). Or the facts regarding the numbers.
Perhaps because they understand TVM and would end up looking as silly as someone yelling "pants of fire."

LOL!! Give it a rest.
The only way the issue could be used to hurt Dems is if Republicans could accuse them of not taking the kinds of actions the Dems are taking now. The Dems made solid gains in the elections of '06 and '08 and put health care at the very top of their agenda -- so it's not as though the American people have been blindsided by all of this.
In the immortal words of George W. Bush circa 2001: "If they have no ideas or policies except obstruction, they should step aside and let others lead." Chew on those words, Republicans.

What? You mean politicians don't pay taxes? That's certainly news to me.
There are many, many millions who will benefit, but as long as it might not directly benefit people like tigermoth, those millions will have to continue to suffer. That is the attitude I'm reading in his/her posts.

To adaydream:
Rodriguez’s comments Monday echoed remarks by former President Fidel Castro, who in a weekend opinion column called Obama’s speech in Copenhagen “deceitful, demagogic and full of ambiguities.”
They've got both brothers as good buddies now.

This will no doubt please the right-wing haters of President Obama on this board, knowing that finally they've got Fidel Castro on their side.
Politics sure does make some strange bedfellows.

Wrong! Party is not the motivation of most liberals that I know. We will support ANY party that supports better access to affordable health care for all. It is just that any plans which achieve such a result are anethema to the Republican Party at this time.
Yes. There are irrational people everywhere.
Whatever problems that exist with the health care plan will be solved by finally getting a public option plan in place that can compete against private insurance companies.

LOL!! The "alternative" -- and this is typical of Republican "solutions" -- did absolutely nothing to address the real problems with the current system.

Too funny!
And we know what the best fix is for that: Something called the "public option." Which NO Republican wanted to consider.
Of course the conservatives don't have a leg to stand on here. They whine at the prospect of "government takeover" of health care and whine when it's completely in the hands of private insurance companies. Nothing but a bunch of ignorant, sorry whiners.

You are wrong about that, as the events of this weekend and this coming week prove.
