And who did the Republican Party CHOOSE as their standard-bearer against Johnson in 1964: That's right kids, it's Barry Goldwater, an ARCH-foe and vocal opponent of that very same Civil Rights Act! Dirksen was one of those rare moderate Republicans, kind of an Arlen Spector or Jim Jeffords of his day. Funny how Republicans can revile someone at the time and then use him to try to prove an impossible point 50 years later.

Truman was reviled by Republicans in the late 1940s and JFK was reviled by Republicans too. The fact that Republicans of the 21st century now claim to admire them simply means that they are catching up to where the Democrats were over 50 years ago.
Keep trying folks; you'll make it eventually.

RomeoRamenII might think that a percentage of 61% white to 37% black (Mississippi) or 71% white to 26.5% black (Alabama) constitutes "black voter domination," but intelligent people know better than to spout such foolishness.
Of course, there's still a lot of white supremacist and racist feelings in those white-voter dominated states and so naturally they went with the new Republican Party. A lot of these same types were the ones that gave Republican David Duke so many of his votes in that other RomeoRamen-"black voter dominated" state of Louisiana. (65% white, 32% black). The parishes that went heavily for Duke went heavily for McCain too.

Then you must have been ecstatic when the RNC chairman apologized for the Southern strategy which was successful at luring unrepentent racist whites into the Republican Party. Byrd didn't qualify because he openly repented of his racist past.

LFRAgain, thank you.
Molenir: Lincoln's words are just as true today as they were when he said them. There are no "competing quotes."
If you strand naked human beings on a fertile though deserted island with no initial capital whatsoever, through labor and ingenunity, wealth will soon be created. The illusion that "times are different" can blind many to this basic truth.

LOL!!!!
People should keep in mind that in the seven decades between President Lincoln and FDR, there were only TWO Democratic administrations. During those seven decades, Congresses and the Supreme Court were controlled by Republicans and Republican appointees. We should not forget the Plessy decision of the Republican-dominated Supreme Court, which institutionalized segregation.
In the deal that made the Republican Rutherfraud B. Hayes president, troops were removed from the South and whites were given a free hand to enact Jim Crow laws which were completely acceded to by the Republican powers in Washington, culminating in the Plessy decision.
Also, we need to keep in mind the strategy by the Republican Party in the 1960s which was designed to attract southern white supremacists into the party -- aka the "Southern strategy." It wasn't that long ago that the Republican National Chairman apologized to African-Americans for this strategy.
That some deluded individuals want to make this legacy appear to be solely the product of the Democratic Party shows how warped their thinking is.

No wealth~No jobs???
One of the founders of the Republican Party, Abraham Lincoln, put it best in his very first message to Congress:
"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."
If President Obama came out today and said something like that, the howling jackals of those who claim to be from the "party of Lincoln" would howl even louder.

LOL!!!! Wow...that is a good one.
So, as the US was growing after WWII up until the 1970s and dominating the world economy, the ratio of CEO pay to ordinary employee pay was on the order of 75 to 1. From the late 1970s, the ratio shot up to several hundreds to one.
If they were truly worth that much more in compensation, the US would not be as messed up economically as it is now. The big problem is that the people who are doing the bidding are essentially the same ones who decide on compensation, as in Former CEO of company A is now on the board of Companies B, C, and D. It's a revolving door where self-regulation and common decency are thrown out the window.
A regular laugh-riot. So a good manager of a car plant will ipso facto be a talented manager at a pharmaceutical company as long as the pay is higher? The Japanese turned out a pretty good auto industry; how many high-priced, "talented" managers did they have to attract from outside Japan to do it? Did the Japanese "failure" to go after the highest priced talent end up shafting employees and shareholders?
You really believe that baloney, don't you?

The fact is, Ensign has not resigned from the Senate, as the Republican hypocrites, liars and philanderers expected Clinton to resign from his office.
Only a Republican would believe that the results of an election should be overturned (via a totally partisan impeachment) over a minor ethical violation: a "lie" about Woman-B that is totally unrelated to the civil trial involving Woman-A.

LOL!! Perjury rises to the level of an egregious offense when the lie affects the outcome of case in which testimony is being given. If I'm called to testify at a trial and I lie about my middle name or my age, untruth about such trivial details would have no bearing on the case.
Remember it was the Republicans -- many of whom, like this latest philanderer Ensign, were shown to be having their own problems with other women -- who actually thought that it was OK to subject a sitting president to a trivial and groundless civil lawsuit brought on by someone who claimed she would not get promoted unless she played with the governor's winkie. Not only that, but that a lie told about having a relationship with someone completely unrelated to the case rose to the level of "high crimes and misdemeanors."
The "evil Republican" trait is this tendency towards complete and utter sanctimonious hypocrisy. Fortunately, there were enough decent Republicans that, even though they held the majority in Congress, none of the charges against former President Clinton got even a simple majority of votes, much less the level needed for removal.

And we've seen loony right-wingers point out every time someone who isn't American shouldn't be judging what America does. Keep in mind that it is members of the liberal-Left-reformist community in Iran who are taking to the streets now, and it's the hardline conservatives who are the ones killing and repressing them.
It's funny how the hardline conservatives are attacking the U.S. and Obama now, whether Iranian hardliners or domestic ones. The Iranian conservatives are itching for Obama to involve the U.S. more directly and thus give them an excuse to escalate their version of the Patriot Act on their populace. Unfortunately for them, as well as for U.S. conservative hypocrites, Obama isn't playing along.

Read another way: "Conservative hyenas in U.S. accuse Obama of not meddling enough."
This is masterful brinksmanship on President Obama's part. The illegitimate Tehran regime is begging -- as some U.S. conservatives are -- for the U.S. to involve itself to an even greater extent, and thus give the regime an excuse to drive a wedge in an area of great sensitivity to Iranians.

George W. Bush's senior policy advisor on Iran, Suzanne Maloney, is on record saying that Obama is handling this situation just right.
It's a fine line that has to be walked, and the Republican jackals and hyenas lending their unique brand of "support," doesn't make things easier for Americans or Iranians.

Since the level of US aid to Israel is somewhat greater than what we send to Iran, we do have a greater claim to how all financial assistance is being used. Common sense should tell you that. Alas...
President Obama is playing it just right. Of course, if President Obama "reached out" to the point that he was throwing gasoline on the fire, the resulting carnage would suit teleprompter just fine as giving him more reason to score his partisan-hackworthy political points.

Hope for necessary, liberal change is a very powerful force. One can almost hear the hardline followers of Ahmadinejad likening his opposition to the Iranian version of "Sore-Losermen." Conservatism wedded to religious fundamentalism is always bad news for ordinary people who possess brains capable of critical thought.

As a liberal, I stand with those calling for reform in Iran. I have little doubt that President Obama's overtures to the people of Iran and its government are having a great deal of impact on how passionately those supporting reform within Iran are responding. If these brave people did not have hope that they can change things for the better, they wouldn't be risking their safety the way they are for a new vision of Iran.
I oppose the cowardly hardline conservatives of Iran just as I oppose the cowardly hardline conservatives in the US.
