Obama's apology to someone like Jean Colmar will do nothing but encourage him to continue his anti-American rants. The same apology to someone like Madverts would probably make him have more of an open mind on the next issue. Romney's talking about the dangers of apologizing to people like Colmar. It's a valid point to make.

    LOL!! This is pretty funny.

What the Colmars and the Madverts of the world likely see is a leader genuinely trying to do the right thing while the other side of America undermines him. This other side wants the America that arrogantly insists that it only does good and that it's a angel of light -- and woebetide any leader (especially a Democrat) who implies otherwise.

Many right-wingers like to profess that America is a "Christian country," but the Bible that I read has Christ saying something to the effect of "Those who humble themselves shall be exalted; and those who exalt themselves shall be humbled." Hasn't Romney read it?

There's a lot of humble pie that has to be served up after all these Republican orgies of self-exaltation.

    Obama's taking a step forward.

LOL! He's taking a step forward by apologizing.

Why do you pretend to support Obama and then apologize for the people, like Romney, who are attacking him?

“The president also claimed on Arabic TV that America has dictated to other nations,” Romney said. “No, America has sacrificed to free nations from dictators.”

LOL!! Mitt, Mitt, Mitt.... Everyone in the world knows that, when behooves American interests, we will support and keep dictators in power, and even overthrow democratically-elected governments to do so. Guatemala, Iran, Chile, the list goes on.

As often as not, when America has liberated a nation from a dictator, it has only done so in order to put someone in his place who is more compliant with American interests.

What CNN is reporting is that the last communcations from the plane had to do with an electrical problem. Other planes had been flying through the same general path before and after the Air France flight.

Nothing takes away from this being a terrible tragedy. What I most want is for the aircraft to be located and the data recorders recovered so that we can understand what happened.

It is very easy to see how people who foster the viewpoint that "abortion is murder" can incite some people who are well-meaning in their heart to do anything to stop the "murder." Even if it means taking another human life.

Abortion is an evil. No doubt in my mind about it. But it is a lesser evil. The remedies that would be put into place to end abortions by law would be far greater evils. To sin or not to sin is always a matter of choice. And so, to remove the ability of a fully-developed human being to choose, must be one of the greatest of all evils.

So you do think that every white person is like that. Gotcha

The vast majority of white males are not the sons of rich parents, nor have they led pampered lives. But, if they are living in the US, they inherit the legacy of a society that was dominated by white males for decades. Corporate boards, Congress, court systems, etc., many centers of power have been occupied by white males far out of proportion to their population in the society at large.

Anyone who believes that this example of dominance is the result of white males being better than women and non-white males, would more apply to the label that some here have called Sotomayor for her expression of pride in her heritage.

What is even more pernicious, is that due to decades of white male dominance of institutions, people get brainwashed into thinking that the standards of qualification themselves should favor white males.

    And I say it's irrelevant...

If that were the case with most conservatives, they would not have brought up Miguel Estrada. Sorry, but biography is relevant to most Americans, as it can help to shape judgment and philosophy.

Does the killer of Dr. Tiller deserve the death penalty, if he is convicted of this? Or Life in Prison? Your thoughts?

Prison. If he ever gets the point were he regrets what he did, he should write essays from his prison cell on why what he did was wrong, and why he would never have done it, if given the chance. Maybe that could have some influence over another person considering violence.

But, since he's 51 and pretty much convinced of his own righteousness, I doubt he would ever express any regrets.

The same posters who are quick to denounce Muslim terrorists as having given up all claim to their cause by resorting to violence, instead shift this thread into a discussion of male paternity rights.

I guess that leaves my option or the status quo.

No, there is another way. Following it, you'll avoid massive loss of life and the radioactive mess that will affect the area for decades to come.

Within a few decades there can be a reunited Korean peninsula following the path of a market economy and democratic institutions. But it will not come about by attacking North Korea now.

Does it make me a bad person to advocate the complete destruction of North Korea? You can't reason with them and the population is brainwashed into the cult of Kim so the only solution is to bomb them to dust.

The answer to your question is "yes."

Bill O'Reilly, who made repeated references to "Tiller the baby killer" may find himself in court, not for child support, but as an accomplice in a wrongful death civil lawsuit filed on behalf of Dr. Tiller's family.

As yelling "Fire!" in a public place is an example of speech that is not protected, so might the yelling of "baby killer!" in order to incite some random persons to commit violence be also unprotected.

The New Republic asks an intriguing question of the so-called "pro-life" crowd: "If abortion truly is what the pro-life movement says it is -- if it is the infliction of deadly violence against an innocent and defenseless human being -- then doesn't morality demand that pro-lifers act in any way they can to stop this violence? I mean, if I believed that a guy working in an office down the street was murdering innocent and defenseless human beings every day, and the governing authorities repeatedly refused to intervene on behalf of the victims, I might feel compelled to do something about it, perhaps even something unreasonable and irresponsible. Wouldn't you?

"This is the radicalizing logic of pro-life rhetoric. Which brings me to my question for pro-lifers: Who is the better, truer member of your movement? The man who murdered serial "baby killer" George Tiller? Or Robert George and other (comparative) moderates, who reject the use of violence to save the innocent?"

I will take your last point first: "Just because they're judicial philosophy is extreme to say the least, doesn't not mean they're nuts."

Extreme to say the least? I see a pattern here. Justice Breyer is a moderate to liberal justice, very much like David Souter. Justice Ginsberg is a bit more liberal than Breyer, but certainly not anything extreme. Sotomayor probably falls to the right of Breyer on some issues, and probably no more to the left of Ginsberg on others.

If there are members of the Supreme Court who are extreme in their views, you would never see any 9-0 decisions. Yet, of course, we see lots of them.

There are some people whose opinions of Sotomayor should be heard, like everyone else's, but whose opinions should not matter very much. I really don't think people should pay too much heed to what people harboring feelings of white supremacy have to say about this. Calling some Justices "nutcases" and "extremists" is indeed going too far beyond the pale of reality.

So every white person is the son of a rich oil barron that skated through life and because his life story isn't an inspiration to the masses he should never be able to hold office, even if he is more qualified.

He can always put himself in front of voters and run for office. He might even become president, where he can practice the judgments of his limited and pampered life experiences to appoint other unqualified people, start wars, and otherwise mess up things. (Until, that is, the people look for someone with a richer life story to replace him and repair things.)

I still don't see how any of this applies to her qualifications for being a supreme court justice.

OK, so you don't see the fact that Sotomayor has had years of experience as a judge. In fact the only person on the Supreme Court who has had trial judge experience is the person she is replacing, David Souter.

What it appears that many whites want to do is to disregard all of Sotomayor's legal/judicial experience and focus on the pride she shows in her Latina heritage, calling it "racist." I say the fact of Sotomayor's life story greatly enhances her other significant qualifications.

Can't blame "Christian fanatics" either, because those sort of actions certainly aren't following any Christian teachings. This is just fundamentalism...

Yes, but the fanatics believe they are following scripture, as they interpret it.

All those types need to be labeled as terrorist and hunted down.

The man who killed this doctor was not operating as a complete loner. He was known by others in the so-called "pro-life" community. He had to draw some inspiration from some of these arch-conservatives. I have no doubt that some people will come forward and say that this guy had expressed his desire to take out Doctor Tiller -- more than once.

It used to be thought of that church was a place of sanctuary.

This is why the term "pro-life" should not be applied to the movement that inspires killers such as the ones who seek out and kill doctors and staff who provide abortions.

Just as important, those who provide abortions must now be seen as extremely courageous, in light of the crazed radical ultra-conservatives who target them.

Like the pedophile priests of Ireland, the murderer will probably get an easy time and treatment like a hero.

Sure, just Paul Hill, the murderer of an abortion doctor in Pensacola, Florida, in 1994. Oh, that's right; you can't. He was executed in the state's electric chair.

So much for the hero's treatment.
