I would wager that if you could first make a vow to try to get to the truth of any given issue, and discipline your mind to genuinely understand the various positions taken by others who have studied it, you would not find Rush Limbaugh all that entertaining. He only serves the continuing brain rot of the non-thinking.

Humor before hate, right?
I have listened to the man on many occasions. I recall during his sign-on after Clinton was elected in '92, it would portray "Day (number) of America Held Hostage." Rhetoric which recalled the Iran hostage crisis.
How does portraying your political opponents as "hostage-takers" and "femi-Nazis" not inspire hatred? If you look at other propaganda-based regimes, they always seem to project their hatred onto their "enemies" the very same way Rush disrepects and dehumanizes his enemies.
I can't imagine any parent who would honestly say they would want their son to become another Rush Limbaugh -- no matter how conservative they are.

Sounds a lot like the principles involved in Dred Scott.
That's where the struggle of gay people resembles the stuggle of African- Americans. And there is no doubt that the momentum is now such that progress is assured. As Iowa goes...

The closest model that comes to mind when knowing how to take Rush Limbaugh is so-called "professional" wrestling. Rush prepares his stage the same way the WWF prepares the bouts.
And, if you'll notice, the same demographic in the US that appears to regard pro wrestling as high entertainment is very much the same as those who'd vote for Cheney-Bush: crazed men with more testosterone than brains and little old ladies who see everything as a fight between good and evil.

Lest anyone misunderstand, Sykes comment on the "half-white guy" is one that I liked and thought was funny.
As much as I don't care for Rush Limbaugh, I didn't like Sykes comments on him. Especially her comment on his being one of the 9/11 hijackers. It only undermined herself.

I agree, but reassert that Sykes did not go nearly far enough. I think you are misinterpreting my previous statement. Saying that members of the black community would be saying "what's wrong with the half-white guy" only skimmed the surface. It would have taken all of 3 minutes to have brought up the black community's failure to embrace Obama from the outset -- and how that tied in to her comment.
We all recall the debate within the black community about Obama's not being "black enough." There is enough tension in that to have made for a LOT of humor. There are a lot of "puckered sphincters" out there and not all the cheeks are white.

I did not like a lot of the comments that Wanda Sykes made.
More importantly, I thought she squandered a terrific opportunity to help the continuing healing process among the races in the US.
When she commented on the bi-racial Obama being the "first black president," and then followed up with "until he screws up. Then, it's 'what's wrong with the half-white guy?'," I thought she was going to remind us that, when Obama first cast his hat into the ring for president, the African-American community by and large did NOT support him.
I believe this was because the black community did not want to come to grips with their own cynicism about whites accepting a person of color. She missed a golden opportunity to cast a light on that.

I have deep misgivings about the President of the United States attending such a gathering. In my view, it fosters the perception -- which, face it folks, is the Truth -- that the leaders of the two major political parties are totally in bed with the press, and vice versa.
We have a serious problem in the United States with the casual acceptance of so many non-democratic forces in our body politic. Mentioned during the evening was the state of journalism in the US, and behind everything likes the barely visible hand of the multi-national corporations. They are the hosts which foster, mutate and transmit the anti-democratic viruses that afflict us.

good comment, nandakandamanda
Since this is, at its fundamental roots, a conflict between two different philosophies and religions (Hindu and Buddhist), one wonders why individuals in the opposing sides can't seem to go back to the roots and find common ground. Where did this all go wrong?

likeitis: great posts!
This issue boils down to simple common sense:
Do Americans have the right to interpret a religious book according to their own consciences? (Certainly, we see the vast differences between the Christian sects and offshoots from Mormonism to Seventh-Day Adventists as evidence of the allowance of differing interpretations.)
So, if the answer is "yes," then there is nothing to stop one group of individuals from deciding on the interpretation that a same-sex partnership is acceptable as a marriage. Once this is done, it puts government in the position to decide which theology has the correct interpretation -- something that the separation of church and state prohibits in the US.
Once you accept that the government has no right to say which group's interpretation is the correct one, it follows that the government has no right to deny what two consenting adults have agreed upon in the form of a contract.
Naturally, this would lead to a review of the laws against polygamy, anticipating questions about that.

Especially when certain segments within the military community feel it is their responsibility as Christians to attempt to convert Muslims.
Putting all the blame on the Taliban for civilian deaths is kind of like how the US military initially handled the whole affair with Pat Tillman.
The only way that Afghanistan is going to evolve from the tribalism that besets it now is through economic and educational progress -- and nobody reading this is going to live to see that day, as the transformation will take many decades if not a century. Western countries can be involved in the transformation, but not through use of their militaries.
The parallels between Afghanistan and Vietnam are striking. It is no small irony that US conservative policymakers themselves referred to Afghanistan as "Russia's Vietnam."

Not quite right. Muslims strive to bury the dead as soon as practicably possible. This, more often than not, does not mean immediately. Autopsies can be and are quite often performed -- and it is not against Islam. There is also some time involved in preparation of the body as well as the burial site. Therefore, this flies in the face of the statement that anything is "dictated" in this regard. As likely as not, local customs and traditions will prevail.
Also, there appear to be few qualms about exhumation in order to investigate cause of death.
For a group without scruples, the Taliban really does appear to be attracting a growing number of followers who are very devoutly religious. I suspect when you are limited in the technology available to you, and your chances of dying are very high, the lengths you will go to to try to strike blows against your enemy will be more extreme.
On the other hand, what you seem to be saying is that the forces fighting the Taliban don't seem to have too many qualms about striking innocents in order to get at the Taliban. Otherwise the Taliban could not "pre-meditate" such casualties. From their point of view, it is understandable how the Afghan who cooperates with those whom the Taliban considers the enemy would not be regarded as completely "innocent."

Simply ludicrous. It is fairly easy to tell who was killed by being cut with a blade and who was blown up. One can't but note that no one has attributed the deaths of the three beheaded civilians to an airstrike.

If you are suggesting that the Taliban are timing their attacks to coordinate with US airstrikes, and then using their limited resources to misrepresent the pile of victims by dumping bodies of those who the Taliban have previously killed and who don't actually live in the houses/compounds attacked, then I suggest you seek serious help.

Prosperity? You mean like during civil wars, panics, and depressions? Your bleating of this "golden era" is nothing more than a myth.
The real golden era, if it ever comes into existence, will be when people can look upon their neighbors with genuine love and tolerance. The reason that nobody in your "circle of friends" approves is that you would likely reject anyone who did.
