I agree with what Jay Jay E posted. As to whether Japan or America is to blame for this loss in cultural pride or identity, Japan has only itself to blame. Nobody forced them to adopt western culture, dress, food, etc. They did it because they didn't want to be seen as a bunch of sandal-wearing goldfish tenders. they wanted to be seen as modern, whatever the hell that means. They still feel this way.
The idea that using a butchered sounding form of English is somehow cool is just stupid. It sounds lazy, ignorant, foolish, and uncultured, something I tend to point out to those who think they're impressing me with their "knowledge of Engrish."
Katakana is not necessary and I would argue never was. I for one am going to refer to the Sky Tree as , someone earlier posted, Sora no ki.

Even entertaining the thought of a westerner coming into this country to "educate" the locals and expecting success is a waste of time. I'd have more respect for these fishermen and their "culture" if they would just come out and give the real reasons why this dolphin hunt continues. $$$$$$$$. It's not as if these fishermen can do anything else. It's their livelihood. Right or wrong, no matter how detrimental their actions may be they will fight as long as there are foreigners pointing the finger and calling them the bad guy.
As far as the police doing anything to prevent any violent action being taken against a peaceful protest, why should they? The police support the ultra right wing movement in this country.
This is Japan not the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, etc... you know countries where they actually value, appreciate, and practice freedom of speech. People should stop telling the Japanese how to think and act because you'd have more success putting your head through a 3" thick brick wall then getting them to see the sense of your argument.
Anybody else find the double meaning in this quote?

I've been at this point after the first moron ran into me on his bike looking at his keitai and demanded I apologise to him.
For those blaming the mother for not keeping an eye on him and letting him wander....are you serious?! 12 years old is too young to understand the dangers of walking towards a platform and not paying attention to where you are going?!

I was thinking the same. How hard did the drunk bump into those people and how close was the man standing to the edge?
Even if your feet are at the edge of the yellow line away from the track you're still a couple feet from the edge of the track.
Was the victim standing behind, on or, as I see many times a day, over the yellow line?
Hopefully the investigation will determine this. Nevertheless what a terrible way to die.

Renho used to be a teenage boy?!
I hope she does stand up to the fossils that run this country and eventually inspires more younger, forward-thinking, hungry citizens to change things instead of patiently waiting their turn.

Beating the record and making all these backward ojisans stark raving mad and foaming at the mouth would have been the best revenge. Win the 31st title and announce your retirement in the ring.

It may have been mentioned in one of the previous 180 comments, I haven't had time to read every single one. But if the fishermen of Taiji are just exercising their rights to preserve and continue their tradition of hunting dolphins and they truly feel they're not doing anything wrong then why all the secrecy and banning of filming of the hunt? It's not like any of them care what the outside world thinks of what they're doing.

Didn't realize you were so easily insulted. By the facts no less. Poor you. Be proud of your hockey team. No one has once stated you shouldn't be. For a team, you quite rightly pointed out, was not considered to be in medal contention, to reach the gold medal game and almost beat Canada, the favourites, on home ice is a great accomplishment. No one has stated any different. You talk about insulting you Americans. Where has anyone in this conversation insulted Americans?
I'm only going by your past remarks on this subject and since the game ended. I know damn well you wouldn't have made the remark. I stand by my statement. You have no idea what courtesy is to sit back and criticize my fellow countrymen and women. I suggest watching Tom Brokaw's piece on Canada and what our country means to yours.
Sincerely one proud Hoser!

No. What rubs us the wrong way is your feeble attempts to hide your angst at losing the gold medal with comments such as these:
You never would have said this had the U.S. won gold. Then we have such jewels as this:
While we hold hockey more dear to our hearts than other sports the same can be said for baseball in the U.S. Yet another veiled attempt to disrespect Canada and Canadians.
We will enjoy our hockey and while we're at it we'll enjoy all these upcoming sporting events also. Because you see Branded just because we don't have the population, resources, and money to throw at big business sports does not mean we Canadians don't appreciate the entertainment value these events brings. Nor does it mean we deserve to be disrespected by people like you.

You may. And if I may: Canada... Olympic Gold Medalists
It is your imagination.
Or as was so eloquently displayed in Atlanta '96 the first loser.
Actually judging by the U.S.' accomplishments in the WBC maybe not.
Keep clinging to these meaningless awards and accomplishments. We Canadians will hold on to the one that matters. But Branded good on ya for finally showing up on the board. Couldn't have been an easy decision.

If they are whaling purely for research purposes as they claim then why is there excess meat left over?
