I'm glad the American goalie got the tournament MVP. Truly deserved it. I wouldn't talk smack about the U.S. team but there are definitely a few on this board who deserve an earful. Yeah you Mr.USA, and my personal favourite Branded, who I guessed correctly wouldn't show up on the board today.

Overall it was an amazing game and the American team, as heartbreaking as it is, should not feel at all discouraged about their accomplishments.

Here's to another exciting and eventful hockey tournament in 2014 in Russia!

I hope Canada lose in their own national sport in their own territory.

    Why?

It's too bad the Japanese don't embrace more meaningful and interesting objects of Japanese design and history instead of tearing them down to build these simplistic, boring, "ugly" monstrosities that can be built anywhere around the world. All in the hopes of being seen as a "modern" country. Hope Godzilla rips Tokyo Tower from it's base and uses it to destroy Tokyo Sky Tree in the future.

    Bring on the Swedes.

Bring on the Slovaks. They just upset Sweden 4-3.

Looking forward to a Canada Finland final with Slovakia taking the bronze :)

English courses tend to be pedantic, focusing on grammatical rules If this remark is aimed at Keio University it is total BS and the writer clearly has no idea about the courses there.

Exactly! The writer should have said all Japanese University's are like this not just Keio. :p

I thought the piece, as commented earlier, was excellent and reiterated what I said earlier. Given Toyota's leadership it is not the top guy who makes the decisions or even knows all the going on's in his/her company but the bureaucrats and middle managers just below who call the shots and often filter the info before it reaches the prez. It will be interesting to watch tomorrow.

As sad as these situations are and no matter how many times we hear about it, it fails to open the eyes of the population to offer any help whatsoever. At least the son followed through unlike those "dirtbags" who kill family members then say"I wanted to kill myself but didn't have the strength to do it."

No disrespect mind you but Canada counted this chicken before the egg hatched ! I'll be doing backflips if the USA takes the Gold !

Yeah well no disrespect to you either but will you be here if the Americans don't get to the gold medal game or lose to Canada?

The stands were just chock full of some of the sourest mugs I've seen in years.

And how did the stands look in Salt Lake after the gold medal game in 02?

Canada had this game circled on their calendar for months.

Well considering the pools weren't finalized until a couple months ago, or was it last month?... I doubt we Canadians had this circled on our calendar so far in advance. If anything it's Feb 28th.

"Brodeur who never really showed up to play." Against the Americans ? Surely you jest ! Next excuse ?

Not an excuse. Brodeur hasn't shown up to play in this tournament. I would argue he's on the team for sentimental reasons. We tend to do that. How else would you explain Pronger on the team?

Oh come on now... What about those classic New Jersey Devil teams that won without heavy shots on goal?? Just because you got more shots doesn't mean you dominated the game...

Sorry but that's the point. Devils won on the strength of Brodeur in net and making the most of the opportunities they were given. Canada didn't. And Brodeur hasn't looked or played like the Brodeur of old. But when you have almost double the shots as your opponent then yeah, I think it's fair to say you dominated.

Just wait till you see Ovechkin- he'll knock you on your duff, skate circles around you, and then fire a wrister into the upper "V" !

Geez really? Wow! That's frightening. I could only imagine what he would do to Team U.S.A. if they face off.

Hardly a stunning result considering Canada came off a shootout win over the Swiss and hasn't really looked that good in any of their games including the 8-0 win over Norway. This is just the wake up call that was needed.

Germany is going to be in a world of pain. And then the Russians before we get revenge on the U.S.

“It’s probably not a bad thing for us to go through that kind of desperation and tight hockey like that,” Crosby said, “because it’s not going to get any easier as we move on here.”

No kidding but next time try going for this desperation against a team that should offer a challenge like the Russians or the States.

Didn't see the game but perhaps took the Swiss too easily? Hopefully this does light a fire under their butts and they come out hitting against the U.S. which will be on BS1 Monday morning.

I'm not condoning what the guy did, drunk or not, he had no right to hug her, especially in this country where physical signs of affection aren't exactly the norm. But what did the 24 year old woman think he wanted? And why did she go to his room in the first place?

The thing that most western Canadians don't seem to remember is that the opening of the west was paid in large by the east and at that time the 2 largest contributors were Quebec and Ontario, So I think Quebec is well in its rights to request respect and equal time for French!

Are you for real?! Quebec has been a drain on Canada for decades and has practically held the country for ransom. Every time they don't get their way they threaten to leave. And when they make those threats they still don't give up on demanding things such as same currency, passport, resources, etc.

And let's not forget how many seats in Parliament they have and the political power they wield in the Senate. If anyone in Canada has a reason to separate it would be the West, particularly Alberta.

Firstly, it is issue of motivation of the gaijin worker. Gaijin are not a japanese so the expectation of hard work is less because natural motivation is less than japanese or other asian.

Seriously? I think a more accurate statement would be foreigners are more motivated when they see a benefit for themselves in the form of higher pay, promotion, or even a simple acknowledgement of a job well done. To many Japanese this would seem to be selfish. But coming from a culture where you are rewarded for bringing success to your company this produces more motivation from someone who wants to get ahead and earn more.

However in Japan where you're not rewarded for your work, but are a part of a seniority based promotion style where the person in front of you could be a complete moron but still get the higher position because they're older than you, where's the drive to work that much harder coming from?

It wouldn't be fair to ask a Japanese worker in a foreign managed company to be creative and use your initiative to come up with ideas or opinions on something. Why is it fair to ask foreigners to work in a Japanese style environment? Just because we're in Japan?

Those who complain about low wages should concentrate more on earning your pay rather than expecting to be paid what YOU think you're worth then doing the job. If you're not happy with your wages leave and go where you'll be appreciated.

Second, the language problem is a big problem. Many gaijin can "talk" japanese, none really "understand" its nuances becuase they are not a japanese. It is peculiar to the special Japanese spirit I think. When a foreigner speaks japanese it always sounds like the looks of katakana. But when a japanese speaks it is like kanji, you know

No I don't know what speaking Japanese has to do with teaching or learning ENGLISH.

It is true that the real reason for motivation to be in japan is onlly for a japanese girl I think too.

    Jealous?

spot on combini. In Canada the Olympics are always a big event and there is always the option of watching it live or on tape delay no matter what country the games are in. Perhaps that's because Canada is a multicultural country.

I personally have not watched any of the coverage on tv here in Japan. Based on what others have told me about the coverage of any international event in this country I haven't missed much.

Having said that does anyone know a good internet website that's showing the games?

Bottom line is the almighty yen here, human life secondary.

That's the bottom line anywhere not just here in Japan.

People here are under the illusion that the government is actually supposed to do something for their citizens. Time to wake up and face reality. Counting on the Government to look after you in your "golden years" is a joke and a half.

The past two generations have grown up in what they feel was an "age of entitlement", getting anything they wanted whether they can afford it or not with no thought to the future. Now it's coming back to bite them in the ass.

But there is no sense of responsibility in this matter by anyone involved. The parents feel obligated to their children to help them out because they are a parent. Maybe living within or below your means would have been the smart thing to do. That would have been responsible parenting.

Marie quipped that security guards even followed her to the bathroom, adding: “I want to go to the movies with a guy who can give me such beautiful jewelry.” And JT has the nerve to ask us why we readers hold these "talents" in such disdain and slam them with our comments? Here's your answer.

Lots of people are jumping to the conclusion that the mother may have killed the boy. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if what the "mother" said happened actually did judging by the insanely stupid things I see people do in this country. Either the woman is a monster or too stupid for words. In any event my heart goes out for this beautiful boy and hope he is in a better place.
