Off topic I know, but I think instead of having toilet cleaners, all staff should take turns at it. Might make people learn how to use them properly.

While I don't really think cleaning a toilet is so bad, I hate the way in general society people yell at and demean those below them.

Japanese go overboard with this "tough love" approach. Just last weekend I saw a young kid berated over being a little out of time in a marching band practice. I can understand teachers, coaches, bosses getting mad about total rebellion and willful defiance, but this getting hysterical over honest mistakes really gets to me.

should have been "kono kuni". re the train accident, I have seen many times on TV "this accident could never happen in Japan". Well, people from many countries think the beef scandal couldn't possibly happen in their country either.

But, it's not really being over critical. On the contrary, I think japanese are amazing. that's what's frustrating. The country that had the shinkansen running way back in 1964, and can produce so many great products has awed the world with it's ability. So, it should be handling the Fukushima problem so much better. And it can!

@Ichiichi, Japan has always prided itself on their safe and superior domestic food supply. In the years I have been here, I have heard countless times about the dangers of Chinese vegetables, US beef, the overuse of pesticides used on foreign fruit, seen days of TV coverage about slight food regulation infringements causing company presidents to bow and weep in repentance.

For the media and Japanese to say now that a little radiation won't hurt anyone is absolutely incredible!!!

Also, the fact that foreigners are the only ones worried is not true. I know plenty of Japanese people who now can't trust the government, Tepco, and now many have come to the conclusion that if they want true reporting, they can't rely on TV.

Anyway, the fact that foreigners are worried more than Japanese disproves your point more than anything! Foreigners were worried that the situation at Fukushima was worse than it was reported -and they were proven right. They were worried about the possibility that food (including beef) had been tainted - and they were right. If you are Japanese, you should actually been very embarrassed that your country was not able to stop farmers from sending cows all over Japan. As Japan is saying regarding the shinkansen accident in China, "mono kuni de wa arenai".

The fact is that the government hasn't ensured that food in Japan is within the safety standards it has set. That is not good -right? Whether that will mean that people will get cancer and die is beyond my medical knowledge. But, if there were an nuclear plant accident like this in Oregon, and cows and vegetables were sent all over the country and there were labeling scandals, the Japanese media would be covering it in a mad frenzy. At the very least, you wouldn't see the government going there and eating strawberries and telling people to support the American farmers, and you wouldn't get Japanese people saying it's probably okay.

You must be a super right winger or something. Most foreigners here love Japan or they wouldn't be here. They just want the government to ensure it's food safety for their sakes and the sakes of their and the Japanese friends children. That should be simple to understand.

For what it's worth, I drink Tokyo tap water and still eat out, so I'm not panicking. But, I and my Japanese wife think it's prudent to not eat Japanese beef, and other products as much as we can. A few minutes of second hand smoke won't kill me either, but I prefer to have clean air for me and my kids. Is that so hard to understand?

Elbuda, I've been in Japan for a long time and caught a lot of trains. Believe it or not, people often sit next to me, and i've never once had a person run away.

Every country will have different ideas about immigration. I've met plenty of people in different countries who think immigration in their country should be stopped or reduced, for different reasons. It's okay to hold that view as long as you don't bomb and shoot people. That goes for Christians, Muslims, vegetarians, anti-whalers - everyone.

The issue here is wholesale murder of innocent people.

Steve, he's not a 14 yr old who fell in with a bad group. He's 32 and has been planning this for years. Do you really think after all these years of cold planning and articulating the justification for this despicable madness that through medication and talking to psychiatrist he will come to the point where he realizes that dressing as a cop, and murdering more than 70 kids was not a nice thing to do? And that he will come out in 21 years and become a friendly school teacher or something?

btw, as much as you seem to love Norwegians and their great understanding, there are already very understandable moves to make sure his evil man is put away for more than 21 years.

Strangely enough, you have shown this man more sympathy and understanding than women who send their kids to day care!

Japan has always had huge earthquakes and more will no doubt come. Be prepared as much as you can. It's a mistake to think that things will settle down in a year. Nobody knows.

Interesting statistics. Basically if LPD, Komeito and Hatoyama/Ozawa weren't bleating about getting him to resign everyday, the average Tarou wouldn't have thought about it. Politicians, listen to the 70%, and instead of playing games, do your jobs!

I'm waiting to hear from the mother. I want to know how he lived with her for so long while plotting all this. Not blaming her at all -but I'm interested to know if she had any suspicions. This is one evil man.

Let's not forget the fact that regardless of any of this man's beliefs and pontifications on other countries immigration policies, he murdered innocent people. Discussing his views is not the thing to do, because that's what he wanted. Same with the people who fly planes into buildings. I don't care what they want to say. We have to stop people from thinking that if they kill enough people they will get the world's attention and airtime to get their message out. His disgusting murderous actions have nothing to do with what Japan should or shouldn't do regarding anything.

I think it's quite okay for women to want to get married because of the disaster. I just hope that if they do they also think of how they can make the guy happy, and not just think about themselves.

I know this is terrible and I don't want to make light of it.... but the explanations Japanese give for crimes amuse me.

Hey Tarou, the movie won't start for another 30 minutes. Do ya wanna grab of coffee or do some chikan?

I'm surprised the cops didn't let him go after suggesting a different train line.

Is he not doing the 'tip your head to one side and then to the other' thing that the ojisans do when they're stressed?

Yeah, that's it alright. But it's not only ojisans - my wife does it too when we have a disagreement and I am talking. I think it means "Why do I have to sit here and put up with listening to this complete load of rubbish".
