I'm another one who was surprised at Aretha and Beyonce in the same sentence!
J-pop may be easier to like if you knew Japanese better, but in the end you have to look at the consumers. J-pop is probably liked by teenagers and early 20's, while many of the posters here are getting a little old. Personally, I hate seeing a group of cute males or females dance and all sing harmony to a forgettable song, but that would be the case in English or any other language. So, the success of smap bewilders me. My theory is that lots of the appeal is that the average kid can think "wow, I could do that, I wish I could be there like them. Maybe if I get a few friends and we practice some moves in Yoyogi Park, put on some makeup, we could be the next stars". And they very well could be.
I prefer watching musicians that make me think, "Wow that's incredible. I could never play, or sing like that". You don't get that feeling with smap or akb48 or whoever they are.
Southern All Stars are great fun to watch but they aren't Jpop I suppose.

Who said they are going to exclusively support apple products. Some people just seem to get upset with any news about apple. btw, There maybe more android phones soon, but people will only buy them because the iphone came out first and showed them what was possible.

And if a man really really really loves his woman he would take her to the finest hotel in town? So much for equality of the sexes.

Orchid, I see your point. I think that marriage will never go out of style. I think it's what most people wanting - at SOME point in their lives. It's just that it's one of the hardest things in life to do successfully, but for which there isn't a lot of prior training/preparation. Funnily enough I have met couples who just get married, don't fight and just live happily ever after.

Fishy, "WE have to be happy to make the marriage work, not just He or SHE"
Absolutely. In fact, that's about it. Sadly, some people don't even think about it.
Cleo, you are of course right. Bloodletting can be done in different ways - and I prefer the less painful methods.

Stormqueen . Amen. What a line! Never tire of that movie - and having him in scenes with Richard Harris and Oliver Reed is just about as good as it gets.

Interesting. One guy says that he hasn't met a happy couple. Then a woman says that her husband is really happy, and then talks about thorns and occasional metaphorical blood-letting. Maybe some husbands aren't as happy as their wives think they are and don't enjoy the bloodletting as much?

Yeah, that's the first thing a man looks at ..... ?! So a beautiful woman wants to buy you a drink and you turn her down saying, "Are you kidding? With calves like that?" Calf muscles are overrated.

Videos like that can be useful. Kids love watching and mimicking. They can learn words and meaning and pronunciation. Often people don't need the explanation.
Professional English teachers hate to hear this, but kids can learn a lot of language (their own or foreign) by just watching the same video over and over again. In fact, I think it makes more sense getting a kid to just plop in front of a TV set and watch a kids movie or show over and over again than send them to the local kids eikaiwa. (Yes, there are thousands of kids in japan who have been to two years of once a week eikaiwa with a REAL English teacher who can't say or understand much when they meet a foreigner other than their teacher.
so, 3800 yen watched fifty times makes sense to me. That's about the same cost as 2 or 3 lessons with Mary and her eikaiwa coloring books.

Marriage will continue because men are still dumb. But a lot of the younger ones are getting wiser and realizing that they can get all the sex they want without handing over their life to someone. If they want kids it's a problem. The happiest married couples I know in Japan is where the wife is a housewife, her husband has plenty of money, and she is free to do whatever she wants, and doesn't see him much. I should say "happiest wives".

Plenty of love hotels that are much cleaner than other hotels. If the image of dirtiness is because people go there for sex, well, yeah, that's the general idea.

japan is full of sex for money. If the older women do it, these girls figure what's wrong with them doing it. They'll find other places.

"Why not just get it over with and make him a 10 Star General."
Because he hasn't yet equalled his Dad's golf record of 38 under par. And before you cynics say you don't believe it, just remember that all of his bodyguards witnessed it!

It's impossible to stop bullying, and it's not always possible to stand up to a bully without getting bullied even more. but it is possible for a person to not commit suicide.
Terrible story, and I hate bullies. But, I am going to do everything I can to make sure my kids tell me what's going on in their lives and minds. I'd like to know the statistics about kids who are bullied and suicide and whether they have siblings or not. Sometimes kids can't talk to their teachers or even parents but they can to a brother or sister.
