"but what kind of girl did he get for it?!"
He's probably not getting married, so he probably doesn't care what kind of girl he got. He may only want her until he can get something better.

Heda, I'm saying that a person "in charge" of an evacuation center is crazy for refusing supplies and then complaining they don't have any.
My beef is with the civil servants. Volunteers were fabulous the way they got up there. I was involved in relaying stuff too, and so many people on shoe string budgets somehow got up there and did good before the govt got there and while TV shows were showing the world how the people had nothing to eat. It was amazing how simple people could do so much by just asking around, renting trucks and going up when the huge govt couldn't.

As an outsider looking in, I'm amazed at how the US is the most powerful nation on earth full of incredibly talented intelligent people ..so, you'd think there would be better people running for Pres. I mean, it's a pretty important job and all ...

Okay Mr Madness, yeah, I'll do some imagining.
Scenario 1. Nobody has any gloves. Or after me and my kids have cold hands for a few days until EXACTLY 200 pairs of gloves get delivered from somewhere, I find out that we were just 10 pairs short!! Even worse if what? The next day some kind soul brought 195 pairs, but ...missed it by whisker. THEN you have a morale problem.
Scenario 2. They come and say hey I've got good news and bad news. There are 200 of you but only 190 pairs of gloves. I'd say WOW!!! That's great news! thank you to the kind people who brought them! And I'm not hero and I'm no Mother Theresa, but guess what? I might just volunteer to be one of the 10 who didn't get gloves that day. ANd I'd be happy for the 190. And I bet there'd be another nine guys like me.
As for the noodles???? Every day Mino Monta was crying on TV because the poor people had no food. Well Mr Madness, maybe this math is too advanced. I have a wife and two kids. Maybe I could do without, of maybe my family of 4 could get 3 bags of noodles...and share.
This sounds like a puzzle that you'd give to the grade 3 class. Ironically Heda Madness and the powers that be in Tohoku's only answer was. "We'd have to refuse the gloves and food".
Once again, university educated Japanese civil servants are stumped by a problem that anyone in my old school could have solved.
So, let's sack the civil servants and send over some gaijin elementary school kids. Wow.

I wonder does he realize that what he did will have absolutely no good for his cause. Just give Japanese a big chance to bash Chinese.

He hated the boy...
Not blaming the woman, but I'd like to know if she had any inkling at all. Did she sense at all that he didn't like the kid, and hope things would get better, or was he a great actor.
I know so many nice guys who aren't kakkoii, aren't good at talking, not confident, and can't get a girlfriend. But they're decent. But there always seem to be absolute scumbag, low-life, don't deserve to live cretins who always seem to be able to get a girl. And women like to think they have some kind of superior intuition, and can judge people better than men.
Someone needs to shoot the truck driver, the mother needs some minders to make sure she picks the right guy next time, and the boy i hope gets a free life pass to Disneyland or whatever to bring back a smile to his face. Moderator, you are against people making grisly comments, but sometimes venting like that at a rotten case like this is the only thing to stop you from crying.
I thought nothing would surprise me anymore, but it kills me to know there are such evil people walking around.

"He told authorities that the corpse was his own,"
I love that line! Made me remember the times I've been to immigration or the city office here. You could probably say, "Hi, I'm dead, that's my corpse over there", and some civil servant would say, "Okay, take a number, fill out this form and wait."

I think you'll find most people say stuff like that about their spouses in Japan. You won't get many "My wife is the most beautiful woman in the world, let me show you her photo", or "My husband is just the best".
Having said that .... there are probably many guys who have to put up with more stick than carrot.
(Yes, I'm basing that on my experience only - just haven't heard women praise their husbands to each other in this country)

Exactly. It's such a basic thing and what I tell my kids (AND my Japanese wife for that matter) re white lies. Trust is the basis of any relationship. When you don't have it you don't have much, and it only leads to more problems.
The irony is that after years of being attacked for my distrust of Japanese media and govt, I finally tried to believe them as much as possible. The one good thing that has come out of this is that my fiercely patriotic wife now understands me when I talk about the media/govt/old Japan. Millions of cynics have been born.

@Netninja, I loved your post about evacuations. You'd want some pretty smart people handling the landings and take-offs though. So ...that's a time when you'd hope they'd be humble enough to hand over logistics. Actually, I think they'd be better off having a system where the military takes over in a case like 3/11. Japanese politicians and civil servants are the last people I'd trust to act fast.

`Dramalama,
Yep.
That's why I don't blame anyone for leaving back then, I don't blame anyone for not wanting to live near nuclear power plants, and why I don't like them.

As a Tokyo dweller, this doesn't come as a surprise, but it probably will for many Japanese. Like all of you I scoured the internet for news during those first few weeks, and my conclusion was that fleeing Tokyo wasn't necessary. In the worst case scenario, there would have been voluntary evacuation in Tokyo. So you had to make the decision, if it "blows", do you hit the highways and get stuck, or stay inside in Tokyo. Everything I read suggested that at the very worst it would involve staying indoors for a day or two.
I don't blame people for deciding to be out of Tokyo, or out of the country for a holiday at that time at all though.
That said, I think the govt should be open. If there's a time when the best thing to do is run, then you run. I like to know the good news and the bad news. But this is a country where STILL most people I know don't tell the patient that they have so many months to live.
I think being an adult means you can handle the truth and make your decisions.
Ivan, re the plane. I've been on a plane where we've been told to prepare for emergency landings. Nothing happened, but there were fire engines racing beside us, and we were prepared. I don't blame the pilot at all for that. Someone once said "The truth will set your free".
And maybe Tokyo people evacuating like that would have been good practice. Probably could have learned a few things.

This is not news! I've been here for 20 years and I always knew that at any moment there could be a 7 or an 8 or more in Tokyo. It will be devastating. You talk about building standards but how many building are set to the new standards. Listen, there will be fires that start that won't be put out because fire engines won't be able to get there. It will be horrific. People drive for hours now getting turned away from hospitals. Imagine what it's going to be like with thousands injured. Ambulances won't be able to make it through many roads. It was just lucky in Kobe that it struck so early. Look at the pictures of the expressway that fell over and imagine if it were full of cars. There are so many buildings that won't survive an 8.
People have to decide if they really want to live in Tokyo. Then if you do, you have to decide what part of Tokyo you live in and what kind of building you live in and work in. And if anything 3/11 should have taught you is that yes, you need a plan B, but you also need a plan C and D. Luck could have you in the wrong place at the wrong time, but we need to have the intelligence to increase your odds of survival. That may mean paying more for smaller accommodation that stays standing. There are some places I would never live in because they will be death traps.
I'm not negative, I'm a realist. Everyone who lives in Japan should study earthquake/tsunami history. If you did, last year's tsunami wouldn't have surprised you. PS.I was always much more worried about the Shizuoka nuclear plant than Fukushima.
There needs to be stockpiles of emergency supplies in more places in Japan. More helicopters, more worst case scenario plans, and I also think First Aid training should be compulsory in schools.
It's a disgrace that japanese can all have 12 years of education including Saturdays, go to juku, and still be surprised about tsunamis and not know what to do in an earthquake.
If you live where there a floods and bush fires you need to learn about them. Or lions and tigers. I live thinking there could be a huge earthquake in Tokyo any day and have been surprised it hasn't come yet.
And yeah, it's not absurd to decide to live outside of Tokyo away from nuclear power plants and with room to move around you.
As for all of you who will make a mad dash out the door, it all depends where you live and what you live in. Lots of places in Tokyo I would rather be inside than outside with glass and bits of buildings fall over me.
give me 100 minuses if you like, but some of you really have to wake up.
