His popularity has gone down? He should promise to resign immediately. How long can the Japanese people up with this!
Man, if this guy resigns, Obama will probably just ask if he can Skype with the next guy instead of a formal visit.

To me Ozawa looks like a crook, sounds like one, and from all I read is one. Can't stand the guy, and hate the way he attacked Kan. He represents everything bad about Japanese politics.
But .. in a way I envy his confidence and ability to not care about what anything thinks. If only the good guys had half of his drive.

so, maybe the people here saying that demon possession isn't real are saying that because the demons are making them say that!
Seriously, this case is outrageous. I can't imagine the terror and suffering of that poor girl. Not sure, but probably the monk received an offering for each ritual. Pathetic. But you could ban religion, but it would just make the fortune tellers richer. Japanese seem willing to believe any crazy thing that they see on TV or their friend told them. Not a week goes by without someone telling me about the link between closing toilet seats and money gods, or that they are a libra, koala type with O blood type which is why they were late or some such nonsense..

There are thousands of religions in Japan with all kinds of combinations of Buddhism, Shinto, fortune-telling or whatever thrown in.
And as strange as that sounds, most people I know have a belief system that includes bits of lots of things thrown in. I don't think religion per se needs to be attacked here. I don't believe in tooth fairies and Santa Claus but I stand by people's rights to do so, and even form a club around it.
But the "holy man" needs to stand trial, and there needs to be an investigation to see if other people are subjected to this treatment which should be banned in my opinion.
But the raving, outrage and hostility in the comments here to anything to do with beliefs is scary! ! Some people here need to get counseling.
Then again ... maybe the Vatican exorcist has some work for him among the gaijin community in Japan. :)

I started this article with a horrible vision of some toudai geek eating onigiri on a toilet - but fortunately finished with a one of a naked English lady sipping wine in a bubble bath.
And they say there is no God ...

@herefornow. I don't think there was any Japanese media frenzy at all. And very few Japanese people I know even knew there was a world cup going on.
Ironically, I think the Cherry Blossoms have more people hoping they do well and not wanting to castigate them outside of Japan. Unfortunately, Japanese are only interested in their team when they win. e.g Every man and his dog wants to meet the nadeshiko japan players, but nobody talked about them a year ago.

Good for you, Michael. I thought it was pretty humble of the Japanese team to say he was thankful to have the chance to play the world's best team.
I didn't think Japan needs to be ashamed - they did their best and it was great to see Onozawa's try. No shame if you do your best, only if you didn't try. The ABs are great at throwing the ball around. There were some nice tries there.
Still, I would have liked to see Japan's best out there.

Definitely a tough problem. How will they decide who gets compensated, how much, and then how many other people should get compensated from what they suffered in WW2. Or other wars for that matter.
There were women who were kidnapped and raped by Japanese soldiers and used as sex slaves. But they were also many who were knowingly sold by their own families, and then others tricked by Koreans. And yes, there were those who voluntarily signed up. The numbers of each, I don't know.
I think Japan has handled most things to do with WW2 badly and in the end just end up hurting their own people.
But if the Korean people and govt are so worried about the comfort women why don't they help them financially. Many of these women faced discrimination and suffering because of how they were treated by their own people.
It's enough to want to resign from the human race to realize that even today their are child sex slaves, and parents who sell their kids. (Yeah, I know - off topic. )

The fact that so many people still believe the US govt did this makes me depressed.
The last guy I met who believes it was all an inside job believes the moon landing and the holocaust were faked too.
And these people are allowed to vote!!
Next they'll be saying the CIA caused the tsunami and the Fukushima meltdown! (no, I shouldn't give them ideas. Oh no, too late - that theory is being expounded too!)

Let's be honest. Both men and women know that prostitution is not a good thing. People vary on how "immoral" or wrong it is, but we all know deep down that it is wrong, bad, or at the very least unfortunate. Here are some things you are very likely to hear.
The prostitutes workmates giving a toast at her wedding praising her for her commitment to her job.
A prostitute telling her daughter that she is so proud that she has decided to follow in Mummy's footsteps.
A father proudly telling everyone that his daughter told the teacher that she has decided on a career in prostitution.
Face it, people defend it because men want to justify themselves for going there. Women who are prostitutes want to continue getting the money, but don't want to be condemned.
Men and women are different. Steve said he can't understand having sex with someone he didn't love. Steve, you are a saint. Most men won't go to a prostitute, but if they were given a free ticket to either the Tonga-Japan game or three hours with the top girl at the Pleasure Dome ... the reason they will go to the game is because they are trying to be moral, religious, or being true to their woman. In other words, lots of men can easily think it would be a good time to have sex with a woman they don't love.
Women on the other hand are different. Which is why women become prostitutes when the price is right. Because they DON'T WANT to do it - but the money becomes worth overriding what they feel in their hearts.
If people love their jobs, they sometimes retire and do similar work on a voluntary basis. I doubt whether many of the NZ prostitutes will do that.
We all know it's wrong. Prostitutes are simply waiting for the day when they won't have to be prostitutes. (And nobody HAS to be one anyway. More than 99% of women choose to simply have less money).
Steve, everyone knows you are right - people just hate being told.

Yeah, he's bad.
But, I'm sure my sister, mother and wife would have known that it was wrong to do that when they were 15. If you're old enough to have a phone, sign up on an internet site, arrange to meet a man for sex, state the price, go though with the act and then receive the money, it's hard to convince people that you are only a child.
If she were my daughter, I'd kill the teacher if I got near him, but I'd consider myself a failure as a parent at the same time.
btw, it's not like anywhere near the majority of 15 yr olds are doing this. i'm sure there are plenty of 15 yr old girls left in Japan who are just as disgusted.

@Steve, I applaud your manners and sense of style. You sound like the perfect English gentleman - until you talk about smashing your wife's camera, and abusing other guests. But I'm sure you were joking. Anyway, you have won people around to your point of view I think - started with 52 dislikes, next went down to the 30s, 20s, and then under 10. :)
Back to the topic. Japanese just love food. They take photos of it for the same reason, that when you go out you all have to say it's oishii, even if 6 other people have said it. (It's a cultural difference. Can you imagine being with 6 Americans and saying "This is delicious", after 3 people said it? You'd have your camera smashed for being unoriginal!

Yes he certainly has great genetics. He's blessed with great genes for muscle building, a great face, a father who supported him all the way and still does. He has every advantage in life. And he is the definition of shiawase because he loves what his father wanted him to be and what he is doing and is good at.
But, we are all a product of our choices, and there are many people with his same advantages who are broke and strung out on drugs.
So, he is a classic hero and a deserving one. The women want him and the men want to be like him. And he's humble. Congratulations. Of all the stars people go crazy about and go to meet at the airport etc, he's a deserving one I reckon.
So, find what you love doing and have aptitude for and go for it.

Give the guy a break. He's just being humble and preempting all the people who will say he doesn't "look like" a Prime Minister. If there were an election, he would lose, because people (esp SOME women - yeah I said it) would be swayed by looks and perceived charisma.
Bush at one time was popular but in the end was hated. Obama was the messiah, and now his ratings are down. Why don't we just stop attacking people from day one.
In the end, the Prime Minister isn't going to fix all the problems and make everyone happy, That's up to us. So, for those sitting in shelters up north, don't hold your breath waiting for Noda to fix up your life and then get even more depressed when he doesn't.
Hasn't even been officially sworn in and he's being criticized. Sounds like he's a ganbariya and didn't come from a rich background, so I like him already.
Give him a chance. Best thing is, he wasn't Ozawa's boy.
