yasukuni's past comments

Strangely enough, I've found that people who can get on with people in their own country can do the same in Japan, but conversely, I've met people who didn't feel they fitted in back home, came to Japan, but after a while start to dislike Japan and the people.

Probably like men who end up thinking all women are no good, and women who think all men are the same.

I read this once a few days ago, then read it again just now after seeing how many comments in had. My conclusion? There are some really weird gaijin in Japan. I can't understand at all why this Mike character was upset at all.

Maybe one of the problems with some foreigners in Japan is they come here just after college and don't really know much about life at all and have little experience even in their own countries. So they come to Japan thinking they are social scientists and come up with such bizarre interpretations of the things they see and experience.

Anyway, I am not great at Japanese, but, I'm at a level where I basically hardly ever speak English. But, if the guy on the train says "Excuse me" or "May I help you", I'm not offended -just think how polite Japanese are. And if one of my friends or workmates sent me an English email, i would be really impressed and be more than happy to communicate in English with them.

There really is something about cops and teachers in this country.

Chikan and this kind of crime should be easy to solve. Go after cops and teachers, then saitama people. That should narrow it down. I wonder what the sex crime rate is for Saitama cops?

@Steve. Don't worry about minuses, I get plenty of them.
But the reason I'd give you a minus is that you seem critical of people so often but then every time someone kills someone or does something REALLY terrible, you are the first to jump in and worry about their mental health and defend them from attacks.

I think if one of your loved one's was killed or maimed it would be harder to be so worried about whether the viscous thug was getting the proper treatment.

Some people are mental ill for sure .. but some people just do rotten things. If what you're saying is true then I think the govt needs to do nationwide mental health checks. Of course, we'd only get the results five months later..

So life long tests mean that they have only tested once since 3/11 and only give the results out 5 months later?

And the boy who had 0.1 mSv (half the limit) was only told recently? Maybe this is a silly question ...but wouldn't it be a good idea to test him again repeatedly? iow, what is his level now after another 5 months of living in such a kiddy-friendly environment?

The govt it hopeless. But at the same time, if I lived there and my kid had been tested, I wouldn't be sitting around waiting 5 months for them to send me the results. Then again, I wouldn't be there.

People need to take more responsibility. I'd rather be safe than have my kids get sick and spend the rest of my life blaming the government.

5 months? Ridiculous. Amazing with all the technology and everyone having email on cellphones etc, that it takes 5 months. But even stranger that parents will just wait 5 months without breaking down the doors and saying they won't leave until they give them the results.

I have a theory based on 20 years of living and working among Japanese, watching them and reading their history. Whether it's accidents like that, Tepco, radiated food, earthquakes or just the silly people risking their lives by not watching on roads etc....

Japanese are missing the "imagine the worst case scenario" gene.

Clever people but they just don't seem to think about the "what-if" situations.

Japangal. it was not a short colonization. And Japanese young people (and old people) need to learn as much about the much more relevant 20th century history as they spend on Sengoku and Jomon periods. While there are some informed people, I would say more than half of Japanese don't know about the suffering of other countries caused by Japan. Which is why every August, Japanese watch sad TV shows and feel sorry for themselves, and declare that war is wrong because they suffered.

I really wish Japan and Korea could get on better.

”People can thank the DPJ for something, namely getting a clue and defusing unneeded tensions with other nations (mainly Korea and China,”

Yeah, isn't it great - this warm fuzzy feeling between the three countries now.
Most Japanese don't think going to Yasukuni is wrong. Many of them feel that if it offends Korea and China so much for politicians to go there "as politicians" on Aug 15, then it would be better not to go - but that's just Japanese pragmatism - it's not because they think there is anything intrinsically wrong with the place or with Japanese going there.

It may be hard to understand for some people to understand, but many normal Japanese and politicians go to Yasukuni just to remember, pray for, or pay their respects to their beloved who died in uniform. Talk to some ordinary Japanese who go there - not the right wingers.

@Blue Witch Okinawas suffered terrible in WW2. But, read some books and talk to some old timers. They weren't dragged into it. Everyone was happy in 1941 when Japan was initially successful. Ask some people what the atmosphere was like when the Pearl Harbor success was announced.

Now I realize I need to delete that post. Having said all that, I saved a 2 yr old from falling on the tracks two weeks ago...

The mother had her back turned and was talking on a keitai. Curious kid had its head and shoulders through the bars of a "safety gate" and was almost through 7 meters in front of a Yamanote train that was getting ready to go!

Picked up the kid, looked for the mother and handed him over to be greeted with a "gomen ne" So, yeah, there ARE crazy parents out there. Now she is the type who needs a lecture. Or a boot in the backside.

A lot of you sound like a bunch a tsk tsking old women. Yeah, you're experts. I've got on plenty of trains too with plenty of kids and got them on and off safely.

But accidents happen in a split second. Go to enough hospitals and talk to enough doctors, nurses, parents and ministers who conduct funerals and you'll realize that accidents happen. Yes, you could always say that if someone had done this or that or not done something else that it wouldn't have happened, but that's the same for most of the cuts and bruises and silly things that have happened to you.

The kid is safe, the train didn't go, and hopefully the parents will be much more careful, and so will everyone who heard the story. I don't know why when this kind of things happen people feel better by criticizing the parents. They no doubt feel bad enough by now.

I don't like China having an aircraft carrier, but it's their right and their business. I think Kitazawa is out of line there, and his comments don't serve any useful purpose.

    Then again ..neither do mine.

Nothing will change by putting it in another department.
Japan's problems are mostly caused by public servants.

Someone said that money was the root of all evil. Well, in Japan, the civil servants are to blame. Doesn't matter who's in power. These guys can't move quickly, don't want to move quickly. This is the heart of everything wrong in Japan. The elites who are great at passing exams, know nothing about real life, and get ahead by just doing what the guy above them says until one day they get to the top, after of course marrying well. It's impossible to expect the govt to check businesses like Tepco or anything - because for one they don't know anything except paper work and meetings, and second because they are usually married into or someone connected to ojouchan from the companies they are supposed to be checking.

Anyone ever seen the great British comedy "Yes, Minister". Multiply that by 100 and take away the laughs and you have Japan.

From speedi, to lack of action re evacuations, food checking, it's all there. Hopeless. Sorry if I offended too many people. Just go down to your local city office. It's from the top right down to the bottom. Go slow, don't do anything out of the ordinary, go home, come back to work until you retire. Not many Action Jacksons in that crowd. Exactly the last kind of people you want running things in times of earthquakes, tsunamis and nuclear power plant problems. And especially not when you have all three.

"What prospect do people like the kids that rioted have? A dead end job, slogging away at some boring job to get together enough money to pay the rent and a couple of beers on a Saturday night."

Actually that sounds like the life that 90% of the people on the planet lead. But most people don't think that justifies destroying things and stealing.

@Nicky Washida. I really like your post. And I can identify with being married to a Japanese who is finally having to admit the shortcomings of the way Japan is run.

I agree totally too about how this is a great country with great people - the leaders are the ones that fail them.

Anyway, this was the best news I've heard in ages. I hope more people can join the efforts to take back the streets - regardless of race, religion or bank balance, and show that there are more people against the looters.

The worst thing to happen is for everyone to cower in their houses and have both sides criticizing the police. Police plus law abiding citizens outnumber the rioters. They need to be seen that they are the minority and what they are doing won't be tolerated.

    Hang in there Brits.
