The police there are too heavy handed? Just saw a few youtube videos and found myself telling the cops out loud to just go in and bash them. I feel sorry for the normal people who must be scared out of their wits. And for the cops who have to go out and face those thugs.

How about this for a different perspective. What not let people decide what they want to do. If a couple are happy for one of them to not work and stay at home and cook or do whatever they want let them. I wouldn't mind marrying a rich chick and concentrating on hobbies. And not everyone will have kids either. All depends on whether the couple are happy with the arrangement.
BUT - if the income drops and even though you have time and skills you don't work to stop the family from going bankrupt, then the working spouse has my sympathy.
Osaka - just read your post. Good wisdom.
But here is my ideal economic plan for society...
Woman stays home in the early years of childhood (if she can afford it - and most could if they lived within their means), then later as she gets more free time she can go back to work (if she needs/wants) or do part-time work, or stay at home and look after the house, do volunteer work in the community, be a great mother-wife.
Then little kids would have their mothers when they are young, there would be less guilt, and there would be less young people and men(fathers) out of work.
An old system, but it seemed to work back in the day.

fds, that's what I thought. Sounded like a good Japanese answer to me.
But honestly, women are their own worst enemies. They are the ones who critique each others appearance. You don't hear men complaining or raving about a politicians latest outfit, or about whether they should do more with their eyebrows.
Just be happy, smile a lot, take your attention of yourself .....and ...concentrate on pleasing your man.

The thugs who are bashing a looting may have less money than others - I don't know. But that doesn't excuse destroying other people's property and violence. They all see to have clothes on their backs and cell phones with which to communicate. Put them all in a plane and drop the off in Africa, or North Korea and let the demonstrate there.

"Saitama on the news again?? What's wrong with those people?"
Glad to see someone noticed. We are overly represented in crime figures. We need more spending on education, and the building of sports and community facilities. And Tokyo people need to be educated about their discrimination against us.

Mikey, he probably assumed that Japan would have enough blankets. And he probably said more than just ganbatte.
And if he did say ganbatte, actually in Japan, people say that in all kinds of situations - not just to four year olds.

Having said that, they're all nice women. They just don't realize how easy their lives are.

As unreal as the article sounds, there really are a lot of women in Japan who have loads of time on their hands to learn English, play tennis, learn Ikebana, go to concerts, go to Korea for shopping and seeing the locations where the dramas are made, and who are happiest when their husbands are away - and of course they get together with their friends and complain about how hard life is. Not all women here are like that, just like not all men stay out drinking most nights. But there are enough of them to make the article realistic.
Or maybe I just know too many of those types? And the younger ones, who want to become like that.

Seems to me that what we need is a breakthrough in battery technology. I predict that in 10 years there will be a radical development in the method of storing electricity. So if you could use solar panels, then store it for later use our problems would be solved.
A nissan battery powering a house for two days is not impressive to some of you, but maybe it's a start.

The more the LDP, Ozawa, Hatoyama etc criticize Kan, the more I like him.
I just hope he doesn't resign, and say something like he was going to, but he realized how he couldn't trust the other morons to do any better.

I really like Lucabarasi's idea. The only other thing I suggest is that while they are over there, maybe they can do a tour of some museum's and talk to survivor's and victims, and maybe watch some documentaries about Nanking - seeing how they think the problems with reconstruction in the North, and Fukushima, and radiation in food is all under control and they have so much free time on their hands.
Oh, of course since they aren't actually working for the Japanese people, they will of course be happy for their salaries to be donated to the relief work here in Japan.

They should have assigned someone from the SDF and given him wide reaching powers, and also given him total responsibility. If someone was in total control they would have ordered the army to not let cows etc out of the area. I also read where in the case of Chernobyl they shifted hundreds of thousands of kids out of there in a short time.
Or someone has to be responsible. As usual in Japanese nobody knows who is responsible and who to blame.
Just shows how dishonest people are. Latest thing I saw on TV was geiger counters which had "Government approved" stamped. But, they weren't actually govt approved. So....if you are worried about stuff, just remember to check everything. It's sad, but for all Japanese go on about Chinese, this country is full of liars - from the farmers, to the nuclear power plant operators, to the guy selling food, to the man selling you a geiger counter so you can protect your kids. This is going to go down as japan's "unfinest hour".

"The trouble with longevity is that it gets tacked on to the end, not when it would be useful. That extra five years, you get it when you're 80, not when you're 25."
i'll remember to think about that the next time I am doing zen meditation.

Women usually want to live longer too just to annoy their husbands. They win every argument and then beat them at living.
Seriously though, japanese might live longer but a lot of them that I see in hospitals just seem to keep hanging on. And the ones at home get to just watch TV and wait on their daughters (or daughter-in-laws) for their round the clock meals.
iow, I'm not sure the last 3-5 years of their lives is worth winning the world longevity olympic gold medal.
