The old hold most of the money and spend the least overall. The government needs to get money circulating in Japan otherwise the economy just spirals downward, as we have seen the last 20 years now. Taxing estates is good policy socially, preventing somewhat the concentration of wealth that retards growth, and makes fiscal sense as well. Taxing smokers is the only way to get idiot smokers to quit, look at NYC now. Smoking rate is 14 percent due to highest tax in the USA and a strong public policy to keep smokers away from non-smokers.
These policies from the DPJ makes sense for Japan and is such a dramatic change from the LDP bridges to nowhere and airports no one uses corporate welfare while running up the debt strategy.

LIeberman,
The johnson line came from rush limbaugh, where of course conservatives get 90 percent of their ideas.
American does not want what bush and the republicans did to the country again. The country today is still trying to recover from failed unfunded wars, economic meltdown with the collapse of capitalism inches from happening and screwing over the middle class and the poor. Obama will win as no one wants the bush years repeated by another texas loser or utah con man.

WolfpackSEP. 20, 2011 - 08:56AM JST If President Obama and Buffet truly believed all of this talk about dividing the country by class and envy towards the successful, then they - as successful people - would have either been sending 80%+ of their considerable wealth to the US Treasury every year or they would have been donating that much to charity. The fact that they don't tells you a lot about their motives. They simply believe in socialism as the best way to organize a society. I disagree because more than a hundred years of history has proven in many different nations and cultures that this economic philosophy doesn't work. Even in countries with a relatively homogenous culture such as Japan, socialist government is doomed to failure. The result of such failure is a lot more poverty and despair for everyone. Socialism simply improves the lives of people today at the expense of their children and grandchildren. Sure, it's a nice idea and the motivation for providing for all is sincere. However, it is a philosophy that is incompatible with human nature.
** Right, tell that to China or Japan or Germany or Singapore or any other major industrial countries which are socialist by your definition. Or look at the US at its peak in the 50s when taxes were at 90% on the top earners. Thats your socialism for you. You wind up republicans have no idea what you are talking about at all, no sense of history, no understanding of the USA either. The model you support is a banana republic where one percent owns 99% of wealth. That is what 30 years of republican rule has pushed the USA toward today. You deluded tea party types think one way you will be one of those 1 percent. News flash, you are more likely to be living out of you car as the rich screw the middle class over again and again and again. Hence stagnant wages for the middle class since Ronny Reagun started the looting of the middle class. Hence the huge increase in American poverty. Hence the near collapse of the US economy in 2008 under Bush that only a massive bailout, Oh how socialist can that be, by the US government saved the country from full on depression.
These are the facts, not the miserable fiction that uniformed Ayn Rand clones tell themselves over and over again convincing no one but themselves.

Good grief, married people live longer. That means these newly married seniors will be in front of me at the grocer slowly counting out their single yen coins for another decade or so. Let them remain single and take up sky diving as a hobby.

Fall will last a week or so. This year was the hottest on the planet going back 75 years. Japan is no exception.
Get use to it, as long as oil and coal companies call the shots in most countries it will be more of the same, except even hotter. Al Gore, of course along with science, is absolutely right.

We all miss Kan already. He is the exception to the rule in J politics that you must be an idiot to get picked by the party to win an election. Or the imbecile grandson of a former PM.

smithinjapan,
since when did being stupid disqualify anyone in the republican party to run for any office, including the President? I do agree that Parry does make even Bush seem like a intellectual. Galileo as an example of science being wrong? Wow. But the no nothings watching Fox news would believe the sun revolves around the earth today if fox news told them that.

wolfbisquits,
who you know is not important. The fact is that raising the price of smoking is the only proven way of getting people to kick the nicotine addiction. Information about cancer does little good.
Smokers is Japan are willfully clueless about the dangers of second hand smoke to kids around them. It is amazing to me but understandable as nicotine is a stronger drug than herion to kick. Some parents smoke in the car with their kids, shortening the kids lives along with their own. This proves that a percentage of any population is so weak that they cannot stop doing what is bad for them and the for their families. Hence the price hike as the only means to get them to do the right thing for themselves. Smokers, really, are stupid in the end. Stupid to start smoking and stupid not to figure out how to quit.
Bravo for the DPJ in annoucing this. The LDP is a corrupt smoke filled party that does not care about the costs of smoking in lives or the cost to the rest of society to pay for lung cancer, etc.

Barack Obama lowered his inherited credit rating from AAA to AAplus.
It was the tea party terrorists in the republican party that drove down the US credit rating by threatening to take the USA to default. Never ceases to amaze me when the republicans blame others for their own self made failures. Like with Steele called the failed war in Afganistan Obama's war. Its comical how the republicans are so out of touch with reality.

Its great to be a CEO for sure, not so great to be a US taxpayer who subsidizes the rich thanks to the republican reverse robin hood tax strategy. All these tax breaks for corporations yields zero jobs, all it does is make more money for the CEOs so they can buy their fifth home while many regular americans are in foreclosure.

remarkable in that his amount is the daily allowance Hatapopo gets from his mom and is also the same amount that falls out of Ozawa's pockets when he gets out of a cab.

The people attacking Kan are clueless, just repeating the rightwing propaganda spread by the youmuri and other sources. Kan was not a corporate slave type or a retarded grandson of a former PM. He had the whole Japanese government stacked against him, including the thief Ozawa. How Kan beat Ozawa is unclear, but he did and gave Japan a chance to redeem itself. Well, once he started to bypass the corrupt ministries he was doomed. The J press attack dogs went after him.
The reason Kan gets some support here is that most gaijin are not poisoned by the local mainstream media everyday. They can see the man for what he was, honest, deliberate, mistrustful of the ministries after he discovered the Ministry of Health spread AIDS in Japan to help the blood companies profits, and willing to stand up for the J people rather than business 100% of the time, as the LDP does for example.

Power/money politics moves on. Despite the brief interlude of PM Kan, the first PM that has not been bought and sold outright, Ozawa is moving the country backward now. If Ozawa supports Kaieda he must indeed be an clueless idiot easily manipulated. The Shogun does not want thinking slaves.
Japan had a brief chance under Kan to move beyond its failed policies from the past. But Kan was undermined by the press, the LDP, the ministries and his own party. The window opened briefly and now it has been shut tight again. Japan will look back to Kan and say there, we lost a chance once again, to start living in the present and not in the 1970s.
