Honda's ASIMO robot conducts Detroit Symphony Orchestra

Wednesday 14th May, 02:05 PM JST

The ASIMO robot of Honda Motor Co. on Tuesday night ‘‘conducted’’ a performance of ‘‘Impossible Dream,’’ a song from the musical ‘‘Man of La Mancha,’’ the automaker said. It was the first such action by a humanoid robot, the company said. ASIMO walked on stage at a concert hall with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in Michigan, and ‘‘conducted’’ the three-minute piece, moving its arms, according to the company.

ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, opened the day’s concert program, which also featured a performance by globally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. After performing with the orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma shook the robot’s hands. More than 2,000 classical music fans jammed the concert hall. Tickets had been sold out well before the day of the performance, the automaker said.
