Hideki Matsui singled in a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning Monday as the New York Yankees fell 8-6 to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 5 of the World Series. The Phillies improved to two games to three against the Yankees in the best-of-seven.
Matsui, who was removed from the starting lineup for the third consecutive game as the designated hitter rule is not in effect in at the National League stadium in Philadelphia, singled to left with no outs and a runner at second in the ninth. Derek Jeter grounded into a double play that scored Jorge Posada from third but Mark Teixeira struck out swinging to end the game with the Yankees just one win away from their first championship title in nine years. Chase Utley hit two homers for the Phillies to get the offense rolling. The series returns to New York for Game 6 on Wednesday.
