Police on Monday released security camera footage of a man withdrawing cash from the bank account of a 21-year-old college senior who was found murdered last month at her burned apartment in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture. Yukari Ogino, a Chiba University student, was found dead with stab wounds to the neck and chest after the apartment where she lived alone was destroyed in an arson attack on Oct 22.
The man apparently stole cash cards from her and tried to withdraw cash from her accounts at more than one bank at three automatic teller machines near JR Matsudo Station in the vicinity of her apartment on Oct 21, investigators said.
One of Ogino’s parents in Hyogo Prefecture received an e-mail from her mobile phone asking for a remittance on the morning of Oct 21, and the man on that afternoon took out the remaining 20,000 yen or so from one of her accounts, though it was not the one used for the transfer, they said.
The man, who is about 170 centimeters tall and slender and was wearing glasses, a dark cap and a blue shirt at the time, obviously failed to get the pin numbers from Ogino for all the cards, as he tried unsuccessfully to withdraw cash from her other accounts, according to the investigators who are trying to identify him.
