There's still plenty of very original music out there. It defies genres, which may be the reason why the study missed it.

They need a study for this? i remember the eighties as the last time that there was interesting popmusic, new wave, punk, electronic music,rap, and then somewhere in the 90's it became like standardized music (but not only music, Movies, TV-series also). The music industry has always been about making money, but it seems that no-one takes risks with new bands, don't get me wrong, there are many good bands out there (just check the indie bands on internet). But the mainstream popmusic is just like a product.
